Thank you for taking the time to read and enjoy this extended spring/summer edition of Port Robinson Proud’s community newsletter—The Bridge. It has been a very busy spring in Port Robinson with lots of events that have happened and lots more to come!

The Port Robinson Ferry (Bridge-It)A deal has been reached between the City of Thorold and the St. Lawrence Sea-way whereby the City will have docking rights for the next 11 years for a fee of $225.00 per year. After the current agreement that is in place with the Region of Niagara and the City of Thorold co-funding the ferry, until 2017, a new agree-ment or funding partner will be needed to keep the ferry up and running. But for now, our beloved Bridge-It is still running.

Please check out the ferry schedule included in this newsletter. We encourage everyone to take a ride on the ferry to discover the lovely trails along the canals for walking, hiking or cycling.

The Old LockWith the arrival of spring, we have put out the bench and some flowers at the Old Lock; since it was a favorite shady spot last summer to watch the ships pass by. Please enjoy!

Port Robinson Proud, along with the Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority and the Niagara Restoration Council made a presentation to Thorold Council on April 19/16 requesting permission to install pollinator and butterfly gardens at the Old Lock. This is a wonderful partnership that will allow the entire com-munity to be involved in the planting and care of the gardens and it will beautify the entire streetscape with colour all year long.

We will be planting the gardens on September 10th and we ask and invite all those with green thumbs to please consider coming out to help us plant the gar-dens. We need lots of volunteers and we look forward to this garden becoming a focal point of River Street.

We also want to thank Joe Prytula for donating two Bee Houses for the gardens. These little habitats are similar in size to a birdhouse and offer a home to Ma-son and Leafcutter bees, which are strictly non-stinging, solitary and pollinating bees. Awesome! (http://www.naturalinsectcontrol.com/)

Bus ServiceIn April, the St. Catharines Transit began regular Monday to Saturday bus service to Port Robin-son. The schedule for Route 22 (Thorold South) is included in this issue.

The Easter Egg HuntThe annual Easter Egg Hunt and Pancake Breakfast was held in late March and 75 children took part in the Port Robinson tradition. It was a great day! Big thank you to Graham and Debbie Bond for their generous donation and the use of their property again!

The Darlene Ryan Port Robinson Community CentreThe Board of Management is currently seeking new volunteers and if you are interested in taking part in the Community Centre, please see the City of Thorold’s website to download an application at http://www.thorold.com/content/current-citizen-appointments-committees-and-boards

The Ladies Tea PartyIn April, a Ladies Tea Party was held at the Community Centre and over 6o women attended the afternoon event. It was a huge success and a wonderful way to connect with friends and neighbours. Tea, coffee, sandwiches and sweets were served and was made possible due to the kind generosity of Mark and Paul Saric. The hall looked lovely and was reminiscent of the long ago historical days of Port Robinson. Thank you Mark and Paula ---true community champions!

The Port Robinson ParkAs of the date of printing, we still have not heard if we are a successful applicant to the Canada Heritage 150 grant for the proposed gazebo at Port Robinson Park. Any updates will be announced on Facebook or at our website.

We are grateful to Brandon and the students of NTEC for their kind donation of time and talents in caring for the trees and the mulch in the park. Everyday, the trees look more and more maintained and beautiful! Way to go NTEC!

Speaking of trees, 20 mature trees are being planted near and around the playground, the splash pad and basketball courts to provide the much-needed shade to that area. The donation of these trees was made possible through our partnership with the NPCA and the Niagara Restoration Council and the “Canopies for Communities” program. Big thanks to Station 3 volunteers for help-ing us keep the trees watered so that they can take root and live a long shady life in Port Robinson!

St. Paul’s Heritage CentreA service was held on May 15th at the site of St. Paul’s Anglican Church followed by a light lun-cheon at the community centre. Folks had an opportunity to see the interior of the church and the work required to re-establish it as a Heritage Centre in the future. There will be an online auction to help raise funds for the restoration, and if you can help, please check out www.facebook.com/St.Paul’sHeritageCentre. The auction will be up and running online in early to mid-June. Please consider helping this worthy community cause.

History of Port Robinson/Historical Guided WalksOur Facebook and Twitter get very busy at every posting of historical pictures and stories. We know that our residents just love hearing about the early days of our hamlet. This past winter a number of old Port Robinson class pictures were shared on Facebook and it helped to connect quite a few old friends and class chums. Please feel free to share your historical photos or stories with our social media pages. And if Facebook is not your thing, then please feel free to email them to us and we can upload them for the entire community to see.

This summer we will be hosting a few guided historical tours (walk & talks) here in Port Robinson, which will include a stop for lunch at Stevie Nics, NTEC or Club Castropignano. As of the printing of this edition, not all of the dates have not been finalized but please watch our website www.por-trobinsonproud.ca for more info in early to mid June.

The first guided tour will take place on June 14th starting at 11:30am at NTEC. The cost of the walk is $12.00, payable in cash on the day of the tour. The tour includes a guided walk and a full lunch hosted and catered at NTEC. Please register at [email protected] before June 11th. These guided tours will be led by Tom Russell and will be open to locals and tourists alike. We hope you will consider joining one of these tours to learn more about our awesome little town!

Community Clean Up DayApril 23rd was the day that Port Robinson got tidied up for spring. Thanks to the volunteers and students who came out and help us pick up 21 bags of garbage and 15 bags of recycling from the roadsides, sidewalks and the park. Huge thanks to Waylon and Jillian Tweedy for their generosity in donating garbage and recycling bags and gloves. Thank you to the Thorold Lions Club for helping out and bringing us garbage pickers to make the job safer. Great community pride!

Community Beautification ProjectsHave you noticed the new bike rack at Stevie Nics? Now more of our cycling tourists are stopping by and staying for a while thanks to a safe place to park their bikes. We have taken the bike theme a few steps further and created some civic “bike art”. Check out the first of many bike themed proj-ects to pop up around Port Robinson…you have probably noticed the colourful painted bikes on Bridge Street that serve as a welcome to the cyclists and add a nice dash of summer colour to our streetscapes! Big thank you to Ken’s Salvage Yard in Thorold South for the donation of the bikes!

Fire Stream – June 2016

Greetings from the Port Robinson Fire Hall,

Fire Station update… I am pleased to announce, during the third week of February, Upham Heating and Air Conditioning completed repairs to our basment heating system. This work

included installation of ductwork and defusers (vents). The finshed product boasts some notable improvements that include relocation of some defusers to promote more even heating and added vents in the washrooms and kitchen area. If that were not enough, the invoice for George’s service was very reasonable.

On the north side of the station you may have noticed some yellow caution tape and a pile of dirt outside of the office window. Reason being, the sump-pump discharge pipe is damaged approximately 2-3 feet outside the foundation wall. Following direction from the administration this item should be repaired in the near future.

Chief’s Award… At our Annual Inauguration on March 5th it was my honour to present Firefighter Evan Shore with the Chief’s Award. We ask our members to make a commitment… we ask them to make the fire department a priority; the basic rule being: family and work comes first and fire hall comes second. That said, if another interest is a prerogative, we wish the individual well and believe they should pursue the other interest. Firefighter Shore has made a recognizable commitment to our station, the department, and community safety. During his involvement Evan continues to attend a high volume of calls, participates in majority of training sessions, attends educational offerings beyond our regular training, and is an active member of our social component… the Port Robinson Firefighters’ Association.

Evan, we thank you and your family for your commitment and dedication!

Recognition of Service… In April Firefighters Chris Johnson and Lee Halliday retired from Thorold Fire and Emergency Services. On behalf of the Port Robinson community I thank Chris and Lee for their years of service and commitment to community safety.

Firefighter Recruitment… We are looking for some community minded Men and Women. Thorold Fire and Emergency Services will host a Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment in September/October. The process begins with an orientation session that outlines who we are and what we do as front line responders. If you would like more information please talk with a member or stop by the Station on any Wednesday evening between 7:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M.

Page 7: The Port Robinson Ferry (Bridge-It) · for now, our beloved Bridge-It is still running. Please check out the ferry schedule included in this newsletter. We encourage everyone to take

Golf Tournament… On June 18th the Port Robinson Firefighters’ Association will host its annual golf tournament. Funds from this event are used to finance community initiatives. Please speak with a member if you would like to play, sponsor a hole, and/or donate to the prize table.

Are you prepared in the event of a large scale emergency… Basic Emergency Kit: You may have some of these basic emergency kit items already, such as a flashlight, battery-operated radio, food, water and blankets. The key is to make sure they are organized, easy to find and easy to carry (in a suitcase with wheels or in a backpack) in case you need to evacuate your home. Whatever you do, don't wait for a disaster to happen.

Check off the items for your 72-hour emergency kit as you accumulate them.

Easy to carry Think of ways that you can pack your emergency kit so that you and those on your emergency plan can easily take the items with you, if necessary

Water Two litres of water per person per day (Include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order)

Food That won't spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food and water once a year)

Manual can opener Flashlight and batteries Battery-powered or wind-up radio Extra batteries First aid kit Special needs items

Prescription medications, infant formula or equipment for people with disabilities Extra keys for your car and house Cash

Include smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travellers cheques are also useful) and change for payphones

Emergency plan Include a copy of it and ensure it contains in-town and out-of-town contact information Compliments of http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/kts/bsc-kt-en.aspx Yours in community safety, Carl G. Pearson District Chief - Thorold Station No. 3 Thorold Fire & Emergency Services

The Immaculate Conception Church of Port Robinson began its life as small wooden frame Roman Catholic Mission Church in Allanburg. Built prior to 1852 , the Church was determined to be too small in 1876 so it was sold to the Port Robinson Congregation. Mr. Joseph Stark, a contractor/ship carpenter from Port Robinson loaded the Church onto a barge and moved it via the Welland Canal to Port Robinson. The Church was then relocated to South Street North.Father Timothy J. Sullivan was the pastor and faithfully served the congregation in Port Robin-son travelling from Thorold by horse and buggy, sleigh or the local train. A large number of Irish Catholics had settled in the village to seek work on the construction of the Welland Canal. Some of the family names are Welsh, Schuman, Quinlan, O`Neill, Feeney, Madigan, Lynch, Mc-Dermott, Offspring, Russell and Doyle. In 1918 Father Sullivan celebrated his Golden Jubilee

here in Port Robinson. The Church was enlarged to about twice its size in 1912, the interior was refurbished and a new organ installed. In 1959 the Church was updat-ed again, a choir loft was added and stucco was applied to the exterior of the Church.Mrs. Mary McCombs became the first president of the CWL in 1953. Gertrude Willick, a mem-ber of the CWL, was the Church organist for 65 years.Due to declining attendance the Immaculate Conception Church of Port Robinson was closed in 1998 and demolished on February 3, 2010.

The Bell from the Church is like many of the bells found in the Niagara area. This Bell is made of iron, there are no markings on the Bell, however it is safe to assume that it was cast in Troy, New York. All the marked bells in the area that I have seen are from Troy, N. Y. The Bell most certainly dates from the second half of the nineteenth century, consistent with the date of construction of the church. However the interesting part of the story is how the Bell was rediscovered, restored and re-turned to its place of honour at the site of the Church here in Port Robinson. On March 10, 2014, a representative of the Catholic Women’s League approached a resident of Port Robinson, Sally Law, and asked if she would attempt to have the Church Bell restored. At that time the Bell was temporarily stored on the property of Select Total Service at 126 South Street North. Arrangements were made to have the Bell taken to Carey Industries on Hur-ricane Road who restored the badly corroded bell to its present condition. The next step was

to have Kirkpatrick Stoneworks Ltd. pick up the bell and attach it to a granite base at their site in Fonthill. They then installed the finished product with a suitable plaque at its old home on South Street North. On October 14, 2014, Bishop Bergie of the Diocese of St. Catharines and Father Ken-neth Webb, pastor of St. Aloysius, Thorold, performed a ceremony blessing the Bell. There were many former parishioners in attendance to witness this historic event. This restoration project could not have been completed without the generous contribution of the three aforementioned businesses.References:1.
