Dear Parents, Breaking News: Three Politz students travel to South Pole to find other Politz Bear friends! This is scientifically inaccurate – can you guess why? Honestly – they went to the South Pole! (It’s summer there – only -20 F!) We are eagerly awaiting their return so that they can share their scientific findings on the list of thirty questions we gave them to re- search. Yes – they had homework over their extended vacation! We are also studying the halachic parameters of how to keep Shabbat and daven in 24 hours of sunlight – a phenomenon that occurs in the South Pole amongst other geographic loca- tions. To help us find these answers, Rabbi Sinensky, of Kohelet Yeshiva High School, will be giving a class on this fascinating subject to our middle school students. This class is open to the public. (See the at- tached flyer for details.) As the school year transitions into its sec- ond half, we will be “checking in” with our parents to see how life at Politz is for your children. There will be a brief survey that will be sent to you via email in the next few weeks. Please take the time to answer this survey, so we can address any concerns you may have. The week of January 12th, we will be con- ducting a school wide homework data col- lection to compare and analyze the actual length of our daily homework regiment in both General and Judaic Studies. Some students will be asked to monitor their ac- tual time allotments they spend on home- work. These findings will be compared to The Politz Press Parsha : Shemot Candle Lighting Time: 4:34 PM January 9, 2015 How you can help our school, at no extra cost to you! ●Please send Box Tops for Ed ucation to the school office. ●Every family in the school has a $3000 scrip obligation. Middle School Language Arts

In all middle school language arts classes, students havebeen using their Ipads to compose their first draft of a fiveparagraph essay based on the classic novel taught inclass. After feedback from Ms. Ray, students revised andsent additional revisions, as needed, until the final draftwas honed.

Eighth graders enjoyed reading The Ad-ventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twainand were amazed that the book waswritten 142 years ago. Students wrotetheir essays on the theme of maturationand growth of the main character, TomSawyer.

Seventh graders read The Secret Gardenby Burnett and wrote essays based onone of the themes, the necessity of hu-man companionship.

After reading the book Tuck Everlastingby Babbitt, which explores the theme ofimmortality, sixth graders completedtheir first five-paragraph essay on one ofthe main characters in the book.

    Literallyspeaking,

it’s been an impressive timein middle school languagearts.

K ITAH DALED IS popping with excitement! We are so glad to be back in school after ourwinter break. Congratulations to those ofyou who received prizes for filling out your check lists.

WE ALL ENJOYED our Hatchalat Naviparty. Thank you to those who broughtspecial treats.WE ARE ELATED to learn, and have alreadyfinished half a Perek. Some of us filled insquares on our Navi charts. We can chantmany shealot uteshuvot from the pesukim by heart!

OUR MIDDOT AND maturity are beautiful, too.Every week we have - middot "mentchen". Anytime anyone sees someone practicingnice middot, they fill out a middot mail card. We can'twait to reach 250 for a party. We already have over70 just from a few weeks!

GRADE 5 SAFAIn Grade 5 Safa, the students learn stories to which theycan relate. These stories are about having positivefriendships and the right way to treat your friends. In thestories they learn something new about our everyday lifeand these stories include quotes from the Gemara andour sages.

The children learn grammar, new vocabulary and theyhave a large list of verbs that help them to communicatein modern Hebrew language (safa). After the childrenhave read each story, the children are then able to telltheir own story in Hebrew, using the vocabulary they justacquired. They also script plays and present them totheir classmates.

The class enjoys learning Hebrew together and soonparents will be able to see their children speaking He-brew on our website!
