Fall 2011 3

What a great October!!! First I would like to thank our exhibitors, Silver and Gold Sponsors for their gracious, continued support of our Vir-ginia State Technical Meeting and Pest Fest. Without their support this event would not be possible.

Next, I would like to thank all who were in attendance this year, the investment of your time and money shows your support and commitment to education and professionalism within our industry. Our num-bers were strong again this year with 175 registrants; this meet-ing is getting better each year.

The education com-mittee, chaired by Nick Lu-pini and rounded out by Jerry McLawhorn, Dr. Dini Miller and Dr. Eric Smith, have done an amazing job of selecting top notch speakers each year. This year being no exception!

I would also like to thank Harry Bryan from Nisus for his culinary skills. Harry starts his Q’ing process at around midnight the day before our meeting in order for everything to be cooked to perfection for our Pest Fest celebration. Harry and Nisus once again stood up to the plate and delivered not only a spectacular BBQ dinner, but snacks during the meeting breaks. Harry and Nisus, we applaud you and are thankful for your continued support and commitment to making this meeting one of the best in the

Country!I would be remiss if I did

not thank Andrea and Kristin, who each year spend countless hours in developing and coor-dinating this meeting. You guys ROCK!!! With that being said if you have suggestions for next year’s meeting please forward them to us so they may be considered. This is your meeting and we want to deliver!

I would also like to thank the committee and all of the people that nominated me for the VPMA Lifetime Steward-ship Award. I cannot begin to tell you how much this award means to me and I will do ev-erything I can to live up to your expectations in regards to our Association and this prestigious award.

I was also glad to get to hear VPMA Scholarship Award recipients Reina Koganemaru and Molly Steadfast present their research during the State Technical Meeting. It is exciting to know that research that will directly impact our industry is being supported by VPMA and conducted right here in Virginia under Dr. Miller’s supervision. Both Reina and Molly received renewal scholarships to continue their research and new student, Brittany Delong was awarded a new scholarship to support her as she defines her area of study. These scholarships are made possible by the generous support of our members who participate in the Scholarship Fundraiser

each year, and by the generous support of each local associa-tion.

Lastly, I would like to con-gratulate all of the new ACE’s in Virginia. Job well done!!! It shows your dedication to education and our industry. In August we had our first ACE preparation course with 23 at-tending nd 9 passing the final exam (and still more who need to test). I said it from the begin-ning; this is not an easy certifi-cation. You must dedicate time for study and preparation to pass this. You cannot just pass it by attending the prep course. We will be having another Prep Course in the winter, so please start your studying now and look for the dates to be pub-lished!

In closing I would like to wish everyone a very happy Holiday Season, a prosperous 2012 and I look forward to see-ing you all soon!

Editor’s Note: Jeff will spend the month of November healing from surgery early in November. While the surgery’s biopsy showed some active cancer cells in his liver, Jeff and his doctors are hopeful that additional chemo will prepare him for a successful surgery in 2012. Jeff wanted to thank all of his industry friends for their prayers and support. They mean the world to Jeff and his family, and they are working!!!

2011 VPMA Pest Management Industry Stewardship Award to VPMA’s current president, Jeff Johnson. And as it happens, peo-ple outside of Virginia have taken note of Jeff’s drive and initiatives as well. Jeff was also awarded the PCT/Crown Leadership Award during PestWorld in New Orleans later in October.

During the award presenta-tion, Gena outlined Jeff’s his-tory in our industry beginning with how he got his foot in the pest management door, when he answered an ad to be a termite technician in 1984. He quickly set the personal goal of moving up into a leadership position, realizing that he would need to

master each position in the firm. In Jeff’s 11 years with Para-mont, he did just that. He moved through route technician, sales and sales management before he became a branch manager, then district manager.

In 1992 he was awarded Manager of the Year. It was during his acceptance of this award, that he illustrated how much he’d grown from the “If it is to be, it is up to me!” days to “There’s no ‘I’ in TEAM”. He used the spotlight that was on him, to commend his entire staff for their contribution to the suc-cess of the team.

He made a leap of faith in 1995, when he left his prom-ising career with this large regional company, and joined

Kevin Kordek as the general manager at A-Active with the purpose of building a sus-tainable busi-ness that put people before all else. This common belief that people are the heart of a business marches hand-in-hand with Jeff’s manage-ment style. He believes that you man-age numbers, but that you lead people. His success at A-Active

was rewarded in 1999 when he was promoted to Vice Presi-dent of Operations. While the daily operations at A-Active are his focus, his career now is in developing A-Active’s future company leaders.

At a time when Jeff was expending lots of energy on his job, and raising a toddler, he also stepped up to a leadership position in VPMA. Elected as a director in 2002, Jeff did not lose anytime stepping up to chair the scholarship com-mittee. The development and nurturing of young academics in the structural pest management field is important to the contin-ued growth of the industry, both technically and professionally.

In his continuous service on the VPMA Board since then, Jeff has also chaired the grievance committee and the education committee. Com-mittee work is the backbone of VPMA’s accomplishments. While decisions are made at the board level, it is the commit-tees that make the proposals and implement the decisions. Jeff has always fulfilled his commit-ments to committee work.

As the education chairman, Jeff put to work his strong belief in the power of education to create success in a person. He helped facilitate the transition of our Master Technician program three years ago to coordination under Dr. Dini Miller. He also built on the 4 year history of the State Technical Meeting to realize a growth of 25% at last year’s meeting. He has served as secretary and vice president

of the board, and is currently beginning his second year as VPMA’s president.

As VPMA’s president, Jeff spearheaded the initiative to bring the ACE (Associate Certified Entomologist) prep course and exam to Virginia. In 2010, Jeff put his strong belief in the power of education to the test, by testing for his ACE. The test was taken after months of his evenings spent surrounded by a pile of books as he prepared for the test. His son, Michael, was so im-pressed by his father’s studying that it gave him the extra incen-tive to work especially hard on his schoolwork. Having achieved his ACE in 2010, he felt strongly that bringing this opportunity to

PMPs in Virginia would raise the professionalism in Virginia’s pest management industry. Since its inaugural presentation in August, the ACE Prep Course has certified an additional 9 people - more than double the current number of ACE certified people in Virginia.

In preparation for this award presentation, Andrea Coron, VPMA Executive Direc-tor, indicated that it is always impressive to summarize an Industry Steward’s history. She said, “Sometimes their service spans generations, sometimes their careers are just beginning, but always the magnitude of the work and effort they put into their career is commendable.” Gena concluded the award presentation by saying, “Whew!

Jeff, it is with great admiration and a profound sense of gratitude for all you have given to our industry, that I give you this Vir-ginia Pest Management Industry Stewardship Award. Congratula-tions, it is well-deserved!” In true Jeff Johnson style his acceptance speech focused on the strides the Association and the Boards he had worked with over the past 9 years have made. He also shined the spotlight on the mentors he credits for his personal devel-opment. The VPMA Industry Stewardship Award selection committee hopes that while Jeff was modest in his acceptance of this award, he knows without a doubt that his fellow PMPs selected him as this year’s recipi-ent because of his unique sense of duty, dedication and hard work that have consistently benefitted our industry.

Homeowners Have to Follow the Law, Too….

By:Liza J. Fleeson, Program Manager and Micah Raub, Program Coordinator, Office of Pesticide Services, Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

We are often asked …“why do commercial pesticide appli-cators have to follow all these laws and regulations, for ex-ample, certification and record-keeping, when homeowners, who buy and use the same prod-ucts, don’t have to? (Why are there different requirements? )

It is primarily because homeowners make applications to their own property and use fewer pesticides. The pesticides that they purchase are typically only available at reduced con-centrations or dilutions com-pared to those used by commer-cial businesses.

While it is true that not all portions of the Virginia Pes-ticide Control Act (Act) and Regulations Pursuant to the Act (Regulations) apply to hom-eowners, they do have to fol-low certain portions of the Act and Regulations when applying pesticides.

The Act has very specific requirements for anyone who is using pesticides including hom-eowners. § 3.2-3939 B makes it…

unlawful for any person to use or cause to be used any pes-ticide in a manner inconsistent with its labeling or regulations of the Board…

In addition, § 3.2-3914

requiresEvery pesticide manufac-

tured, distributed, sold, offered for sale, used, or offered for use shall be registered.

The “Label is the Law” is one of the best known phrases used when teaching applica-tors about following the label. Homeowners, just like commer-cial applicators, have to follow the label and only use registered pesticide products.

Laws and regulations are designed to ensure the protec-tion of human health and the environment, and reflect the differences in who is making the application. The Act has very specific requirements for com-mercial pesticide applicators and application businesses. For example, § 3.2-3930 (A). states

No person shall use …. or supervise the use of any pesti-cide in exchange for compensa-tion of any kind …without first obtaining certification as either a commercial applicator or registered technician.

In addition, § 3.2-3924 (A) states

No pesticide business may sell, distribute, or store any pesticide without a pesticide business license.

These portions of the Act would not apply to homeown-ers.

Commercial applicators and pesticide businesses are applying pesticides to someone else’s property, and are using pesticides (typically at higher concentrations) much more fre-quently than homeowners.

More frequent usage results in increased exposure of applicators to pesticide residues as well as increased opportuni-ties for releasing pesticides into the environment. Because of these reasons, they are subject to a greater number of laws and regulations such as those related to certification, licensing and recordkeeping.

While we do not inspect homeowners routinely, the Of-fice of Pesticide Services does investigate tips, complaints and any incidences related to the misuse of pesticides.

Even though the homeown-ers are not required to meet all the same requirements as com-mercial applicators, they can be subject to enforcement actions, for example, civil penalties for violations of the Act and Regu-lations.

While we work with pesti-cide educators to train certified applicators and registered tech-nicians, reaching the ~8 million citizens of Virginia to provide pesticide safety information can

On Saturday, October 15th, the Virginia Tech Department of Entomology successfully hosted its first Alwood Days – Hokie Bugfest. This family-friendly event promoted the fun and excitement of the science of entomology. VPMA was a sponsor of this inaugural event using funds directed under the VPMA Association Outreach Committee.

It is estimated that more than 3,000 children and adults from near and far turned out to do arts and crafts, feed pet tarantulas, admire exotic bugs, and watch the Alberti Flea Circus.

Other activities included a campus tree tour, a casting pool, robotic bugs and a screen-ing of the movie “Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo.” More than 300 kids received a Junior Entomologist certificate, earned by visiting multiple exhibits and having their passport stamped.

There were displays featur-

ing live insects such as bed bugs, termites, stink bugs, cock-roaches, and many other critters.

Kids could enter the buggy art contest, visit the gift shop, and play insect games. They were able to experience a working beehive and try on a beekeeper’s suit. Even the HokieBird got into the act. The Hokie Bugfest was fun for kids of all ages.

The VPMA booth was shared with Superior Exter-

minating, and manned by Kristi Crutchfield and Damon Shelton. This booth was a “hive” of activ-ity. Kids received NPMA color-ing books which were provided by NPMA and VPMA.

Kids put together candy butterflies while learning the metamorphosis of a butterfly, and they earned stuffed dust mites provided by Protectabed by locating praying mantis hid-ing in a terrarium. This exhibit included a lady bug word search puzzle and a bug word scram-ble.

Other industry supporters included: Superior Extermi-nating, Bug Man Exterminat-ing, Houchins Pest Control Service, Perdue Exterminators and SVPMA. Additionally, supplier support for this event was provided by Dupont and Dow AgroSciences. Due to the constant turnout of kids, this exhibit will require additional volunteers in 2012. If you are interested in being involved in the Hokie Bug Fest 2012, please call VPMA.

VPMA conducted an As-sociate Certified Entomologist (ACE) Prep Course in August that helped prepare 23 partici-pants to take the Entomological Society of America’s (ESA’s) exam.

Becoming an ACE is not a walk in the park. This certifica-tion is designed for pest profes-sionals who have the knowledge and experience (at least 7 years) of pest identification, behavior and treatment, but don’t have the formal education to attain their Board Certified Entomolo-gist (BCE) designation.

The ACE Certification requires diligent self-study and preparation in order to pass the exam that is intended to verify that the individual seeking the ACE certification clearly under-stands the ins and outs of pest management.

Dr. Dini Miller, of Vir-ginia Tech, and Jim Fredericks, Technical Director of NPMA, conducted the full day of train-ing that included a review of insect biology and morphology and general pest knowledge for biting and stinging pets, cock-roaches, pest ants, occasional invaders, rodents and stored product pests, wood destroy-ing insects, pest management tools and practices and pesticide safety, laws and labels were also covered. While the prep course can not substitute for self-study, the review does give partici-

pants the opportunity to clarify information they may be unsure of and is another chance to be-come familiar with the informa-tion. Participants said they felt the prep course was an impor-tant element in their preparation and that it gave them a boost of confidence going into the exam.

Participants had the option to take the exam the day follow-ing the prep course, or to take the exam in October prior to the VPMA State Technical Meet-ing. About half opted to take the exam in August, some opted for the October date and still others will set up their own date with an approved ESA proctor within the year.

Prior to the VPMA ACE Prep course, Virginia only had a handful of ACE certified profes-sionals. VPMA’s current presi-dent, Jeff Johnson, who attained his ACE designation through a prep course offered in Florida in 2010, made bringing the ACE

program to Virginia one of his top priorities. As a result, there are now an additional 9 individ-uals who hold the ACE certifi-cation, and there are still more who have yet to take the exam.

VPMA plans to hold an additional ACE Prep Course during the winter of 2012. If you are interested in becoming an ACE, please contact VPMA. The sooner you register with ESA and begin reviewing the numerous study resources, the better prepared you will be to take the exam! Also, please keep in mind that you must make application with ESA to become an ACE at least 30 days prior to taking the exam.

Congratulations to Virginia’s newest ACE Professionals

Last month, Virginia PMPs converged in Richmond, VA at the Sheraton Park South for the 6th annual Virginia Pest Manage-ment Association (VPMA) State Technical Meeting. Considered by many as the premier training event in the Mid-Atlantic states, the State Technical Meeting is structured to provide a full day of business management train-ing, followed by a full day of technical training by nation-ally renowned speakers. With this year’s attendance holding strong, VPMA seems to have the right formula for creating a

top-notch, value-packed learn-ing experience!

Headlining business management speaker, Cindy Mannes (Arrow) lead a session on the role of sustainability in a company. Using Arrow’s cur-rent model of sustainability as the backbone of their company culture, Mannes shared how it is used to operate every facet of their business in a manner that they can all be proud of.

A panel of VPMA mem-bers (Mike Angove; Dodson Bros., Gena Lupini; Loyal T & PC, Neal Straker; ProTech

PC of VA, Eddie Connor, Jr.; Connor’s Pest Protection and Chuck Roach; A-Active T & PC) shared their real world experience in dealing with the business of bed bugs. This panel covered many aspects of the business end of providing bed bug services. It touched on topics from contracts to consumer education; from the time and cost of doing a proper inspection and treatment to re-cordkeeping, and an exploration of several non-chemical tools in the bed bug toolbox.

Jim Fredericks, Technical

Services Director at NPMA, fol-lowed this panel with a discus-sion of NPMA’s Bed Bug Best Management Practices (BMPs). This document, developed by a committee of research-ers, regulators and PMPs, has been widely circulated since its release in January of this year. Fredericks hit the high points of the BMPs including the guiding principles. The principles are: integrated methods, community-wide approach, education and consumer protection, all from a stance of professionalism. The BMPs provide guidance in the areas of service agreements, recordkeeping, technician and sales staff training, client educa-tion, disposal of beds, furniture, possessions, bed bug detection,

treatment methods, and health and safety concerns.

Marie Horner, Director of Operations for Bruce-Terminix, talked to the conference attend-ees about utilizing every person in your organization as a Partner in Growth (PIG). Using Bruce-Terminix’s model of PIG, she explained how tapping into the potential sales growth inherent in your current accounts can develop all the growth your company needs or can handle.

VPMA, for the first time in STM history, welcomed a representative of the EPA to the podium. Lee Tanner, an Envi-ronmental Protection Specialist with the EPA shared clarifying information about the green building industry in general, and

how it specifically relates to pest management. While that made up the bulk of his presentation, he did touch on new EPA initia-tives like School IPM and vec-tor borne disease strategies.

The final session for the business management day was given by industry heavy-hitter, Mark “Shep” Sheperdigian. Shep, VP of Technical Services for Rose Pest Solutions, put his heart into discussing how important personal protective equipment is to the safety and well-being of our industry.

VPMA held its annual meeting and Pest Fest follow-ing the first day of training. The evening’s event was anchored by the extraordinary barbeque talents of Harry Bryan, with

Nisus. Harry helped us host the first annual Swine Ball. This pig calling contest, with 5 contestants, was a highlight of the evening. Congratulations to our winner, the Virginia Prince of Pig Calling, Roger Lamm with Federal Exterminating. The entire evening was a great success. It featured the Associa-tion’s annual meeting, election results and the awarding of the 14th annual VPMA Industry Lifetime Stewardship Award to Jeff Johnson.

In addition, VPMA made scholarship awards to three students doing research at the Dodson Urban Pest Manage-ment Lab at Virginia Tech, under Dr. Dini Miller. Beth Duncan, Chair of the Scholar-

ship Committee shares, “VPMA is in a unique position to finan-cially support the VT students who are doing the research that will benefit our entire industry – this is research that Dr. Dini Miller is present-ing all over the country.” On top of the busi-ness of the evening, the Asso-ciation raised over $1,000 for the VPMA Scholarship Fund to support ongoing research of graduate students at Virginia Tech.

The hallmark of the State Technical Meeting is the second

day’s technical training. With an all-star cast of speakers from around the country, VPMA provided the nearly 200 people in attendance with a unique opportunity to learn from the nation’s leading entomolo-gists. Headlining speaker, Dr. Bobby Corrigan, was welcomed

back to Virginia to speak to the conferees about the Evolution of Applicators to Analyzers in the Pest Management Industry. His fast-paced presentation covered the evolving nature of our pest management tools, as well as the changing character of our customers.

Later in the day, Dr. Corri-gan also shared his expertise on his favorite topic – Rats and Rat Control. Dr. Corrigan reminded us that due to the complexity and sophistication of commen-sal rodents, inspection is a vital first step in rodent control.

Shep returned to the po-dium during the technical day to discuss the biology and control of filth flies. Tackling the tough

problems using the biology of these flies was a vital part of this presentation. Shep used the idea of “Integrated Fly Manage-ment” to highlight all the as-pects of fly control.

Dr. Faith Oi (University of Florida) spoke on fact and fiction surrounding termites and the other “reportable” wood de-stroying insects. Being able to discern the difference between fact and fiction is critical to providing correct treatment and decreasing the liability associ-ated with WDIs.

Liza Fleeson, Program Manager for VDACS-OPS, addressed the crowd about the good, the bad and the necessity of pesticide regulation. Liza’s lively presentation about chang-es at VDACS-OPS and new and pending state and Federal

regulations gave our State Tech-nical meeting attendees valuable information that helps keep their businesses compliant!

(Virginia Tech) speaking on how application methods for German Cockroach control can improve efficacy in public housing. This hot-off-the-presses research-based information is valuable in deciding what tools to use in the battle against cockroaches, and how best to use them.

Molly Stedfast and Reina Koganemaru, two graduate students working under Dr. Dini Miller who are also VPMA scholarship recipients, gave up-dates on their bed bug research at the State Technical Meeting. Molly spoke on the effective-ness of diatomaceous earth

against bed bugs. Reina spoke on the bed bug’s cuticle as a first defense against insecticides.

“VPMA can provide this caliber of speakers as a result of the heavy sponsorship provided by supplier members of the Association,” said Nick Lupini, Education Committee Chair. “The highest level of sponsor-ship is provided by BASF, Bayer, Bell Labs, CNI & Fire-man’s Fund, Dow Agrosciences, Dupont, Forshaw, Nisus and Residex Turfgrass.” In addi-tion to these “Gold” sponsors, VPMA reports dedicated spon-sorship by “Silver” sponsors: Ehrlich, Ensystex, FMC, Liph-aTech, ThermaStor, TAP Insula-tion, Univar and Zoecon.

Conference attendees had several opportunities to visit the 28 exhibit tables throughout the two-day conference. Sponsors and exhibitors used this time to share new products and services, as well as promote tested products that have served our industry well over the years.

Since its inception, this meet-ing has been touted as the premier training event in Virginia. Certain-ly, our industry has changed much over the past five years, and this meeting and the topics that are addressed during it, have changed right along with the pest manage-ment climate. PMPs can come to the State Technical Meeting year after year and never hear the same old information time and again.
