The new mastitis resistance (MR) index, published for thefirsttimebyCDNinAugust2014,wasaddedtotheHO, AY and Je proof sheets. It uses health data collected from canadian herds within the framework of the natio-nal health project.

As you know, genetic selection for improving udder health has been based for a long time on somatic cells in milk analyses. Until now, this indicator has been effective but only allows for the evaluation of sub-clinical infec-tions. The mastitis resistance index is a more complete indicator as it combines the performance evaluation of a bull’s daughters along with cases of clinical mastitis and the somatic cell count. Thanks to a 79% correlation, a number of bulls well-known for good somatic cell values in their daughters, are also good in the Mastitis Resistance index.

The heritability of MR is 12% so it is possible to improve the health of the mammary system for your cows by ba-sing your selection on this index. Amongst the best cIAQ provensiresforMR,SEAVER,JETTAIRandIMPRESSIONare worth noting.

It should be recalled that mastitis represents 27% of involuntary culling decisions for cows in Québec (Valacta 2013); this is a very important factor related to the eco-nomic aspect of our dairy farms.
