President’s Message Greetings Guild Members— Just to give you a holiday head start, I would like to share my Christmas fabric ideas with you. One year I got the bright idea of wrapping everyone's Christmas presents in Christmas fabrics. A big investment? Yes, but a good one. Think about all the Christmas wrapping that gets thrown away, and it is not inexpensive. The fabric would not be thrown away and I would use it to make future holiday gifts and décor—how fun!

In year #2 of this not fully thought out plan, I decided to make a Christmas quilt for my first two grandchildren. I had almost all the fabric I needed. Just to make sure these children used and appreciated it, I told them it was a magic Christmas quilt. If they slept under it one night during the week before Christmas, they would get an unexpected gift on Christmas morning.

The unexpected gifts were paper money trapped inside clear magic boxes. Kept them occupied for several days.

Year #3 found me still with a pretty decent stash of Christmas fabrics, so I opted to make a variety of Christmas napkins. (We have to use fabric napkins at our house because our dog steals and eats paper napkins directly from our laps.) In order to have a wide enough array of holiday designs however, I had to buy a few more fabrics. We still use these napkins at Christmas—another good investment.

The next year (#4), we hosted Christmas for the whole family, which by now included an additional in-law and a new grandchild. How fun it would be to make Christmas pillow cases for everyone! Pillow cases are much bigger than napkins and our family was bigger as well, so I needed a lot of new Christmas fabric, which by now had already been moved to a large bin.

And here we are at year #5 and I have a very large supply of Christmas fabrics. But it's only September, so I have some time to figure out what to make. Stockings? Placements and table runners? Tree skirts? Decorative pillows? Christmas gift bags? No, I think what I'll do this year is wrap all the Christmas presents in fabric and let the recipients keep the fabric so they can start their own Christmas fabric journeys.

The End (I hope)

Kate Grant, President

The Dues Vote: Here's the plan

At our October meeting, we will be voting on whether or not to increase our annual dues from $25 to $30. Here is how the voting will proceed. First, I will ask for a motion and a second to increase the dues. Then we will have 5 minutes for final comments or questions from the members. At the end of the brief discussion, paper ballots will be handed out. You will then be able to mark the ballots, and they will be collected. The ballots will be counted during the meeting and results will be announced before the end of the meeting. Your vote is very important. Please make every effort to attend this meeting.

Home Workshop

On Sept.17th Lorna Starka did her "Disappearing  Act”. She is always an exciting teacher for our Home Workshops. She has inspiring samples and clear instructions. She supplies all the fabric and pre-cuts it for class to save time and allow you to get more completed. When the project is completed it is donated to Community Services!  All you have to do is sign up and bring your basic sewing supplies. How much

easier could that be! When you have learned Lorna's technique then you can create your own special quilt. Thank you Lorna for all you do for our guild!

In October's Home Workshop we start thinking of DIY gift giving.  We have 3 items we think you will enjoy making.

1.  Mary Serpa will be sharing how to make her special APRON. Many of you saw members wearing this at the Quilt Show and asked who made them.  We asked Mary to show us how to make this apron and she agreed!

2. Connie  Ferreia will show us how to make a very special "personalized" Pot Holder. You don't want to miss this!

3.  Betty  Maddox...  If there is time, and because we just had our 13th Great-Grandchild, I can show you how to make a super-quick and easy Receiving Blanket. Most of us have little ones in our lives among our family, friends or neighbors, and this little blanket makes a welcome gift .

This class is OCT. 15, Seventh Day Adventist Church on Osborne Rd. in Grass Valley. The time is 9:30AM until 2PM.  Be on time and ready to start sewing at 9:30!

BE  SURE TO SIGN UP AND GET A SUPPLY LIST AT THE OCT. guild meeting or call Betty or Eleanor.

Our plans for the NOV. " S.O.S." class is moved to January. So continue to" Save Our Salvages" and Kathy Biggi will show us how to make a special project with them.

We need a member to share a favorite pattern or technique with us in NOVEMBER Home Workshop!   If you would be willing  please contact me or Eleanor as soon as possible.

Until Then.........Keep on Quilting! Betty Maddox and Eleanor SagelyAny questions contact:

Message From Karle deProsse Finance / Budget / Audit Chairperson

At the September General Meeting I assisted President Kate Grant in presenting the Board’s proposal to increase the annual membership dues by $5 to $30. As requested at that meeting, I have prepared a spreadsheet with the actual Income and Expenses for the Guild by year from 1997 through 2014. I will send it to anyone that asks, as well as have copies at the October General Meeting. I can be contacted at 263-3950 (voice or text) or emailed at [email protected].

I have been asked to state my credentials other than being the Finance/ Budget/Audit Chairperson for the Guild. I have owned and operated my own business, Abacus Bookkeeping, for 30 years. I have a degree in accounting and am a certified tax preparer. I specialize in the financial management of small nonprofit organizations. I have worked with non-profits since the mid-seventies (wasn’t that just the other day?) The non-profits have had budgets as small as $3,000 to ones nearing $3 million. I have also helped some apply for their non-profit status. I prepare non-profit tax returns, as well as the Guild’s tax returns since 1997 when I joined the Guild (they weren’t being filed before that.) Anne Wilson gave me a break on the Guild tax returns for a few years. (Thank you, Anne.) I was the Guild Treasurer in 1998 & 1999. I have been the bookkeeper/financial manager/consultant for many non-profits. Some well-known local ones are Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Nevada County MADD, Sierra Nevada Children’s Services, and the American Red Cross of Nevada County, and Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

EXECUTIVE BOARD NOMINATIONS

The following nominations for the 2016 Executive Board have been submitted for the following offices:

Diane Klose - PresidentSusie Hardy - Vice President

Pat Gillings - TreasurerCarolyn Christiansen and Sharon Ellisor  - Co-Secretaries

Any further nominations from the floor will be accepted at the next guild meeting on October 6th.  Voting on these offices will be held that same night.

Guild Challenge

This year the Guild Challenge is “Forest Fantasy”. This theme is also the theme for our 2016 Quilt Show. The challenge quilts will be hung together at the show. There will be a description of what they are and the winners should have their ribbons attached.

There are many kinds of trees in many kinds of forests so you do not have to be limited to the “Tahoe National Forest” forest as your basis. There are forests of kelp and seaweed in the ocean; there are rock forests on islands and numerous imaginative forests all over. Pick your favorite and go from there.

The usual rules: no size or shape requirements, three layers – top, backing & batting, finished and brought to the March Guild meeting for display and voting. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Best Use of Theme, Best Appliqué, Best Art, Best Traditional, Most Humorous and Favorite Quilt.

If you have any questions, please call me. My number is in the directory.

Lois Hodges Guild Challenge Chair

WE CARE!

We are only a few days into this project and the response is overwhelming, so many volunteers and donations from not just PTQG but entire community!

Workshops are scheduled at the Seventh Day Adventist church on Oct. 5, 6, 20 from 9am-3pm.  Bring your sewing machine, extension cord and lunch if you plan to stay.

Still needed.......quilters and clear plastic bags (like dry cleaning bags) to wrap the quilts.

Would say more, but back to making kits!

Thanks to all of you making "We Care" such a success.

Community Services and Drop In and Sew

Community Service meets on the third Thursday (most months), 9:30 – 3:00, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Osborne Hill Road, Grass Valley.

After our lively budget discussion at the September meeting I thought you might be interested to know what the CS budget, $1,750.00, is spent on. Did you know that CS relies on fabric donations for tops, backs,

pillowcases, stockings, and walker bags, from you and the community? The CS budget is spent almost entirely on batt – year to date, $1,372.00 – with the balance, $378.00, spent on yardage for backs because most donations are not large enough. We were, however, fortunate to receive a few large piece donations this summer. We appreciate your generosity when cleaning out your stash. Kathy is continually looking for new patterns and is quite talented at turning every square inch of fabric into a pattern piece; we also sew batt together, with smaller pieces used in “quilt as you go” or potholder quilts. CS wastes nothing!

Kathy’s latest idea for CS is to sponsor a "First Annual CS Block Party"! She has made up kits for a variety of fun blocks using scraps and yielding 10-inch or larger blocks. You can take a “block kit”, return by October CS, and the blocks will be sewn together to make a top. If EVERYONE makes just one or two blocks, we would be able to make several tops. November CS Special ProgramLorna Straka will share her binding technique on 19 November. Sign up at the October meeting. Quilts will be available for you to practice on. We look forward to seeing you there!

2015 Community Service Dates October 15 November 19 December Distribution Wednesday, 2nd

REMEMBER, there is NO CS in December

Cannot attend CS Thursday or a Guild meeting? I will deliver a kit, quilt sandwich, or quilts to bind to you to work on at home – call or email me.

Thank you, Marjorie McConnell

Pine Tree Quilt Guild presents its own, Ingrid Cataneo for its November program! Lecture: The Art of Fabric Collage and trunk show

Date: Nov. 3rd. 6:30 p.m. Grass Valley Charter School

Workshop: Juvenile Garibaldi Fish

Date: Nov. 4th. 10-3 p.m. Seventh Day Adventist Church

Hello Guild Members,

I have been hooked on quilting since receiving my first ribbon at the Nevada County Fair in 1997. Over the years I made many traditional quilts for family and friends. When I discovered “art quilts”, I immediately jumped in. I’m confident with thread painting, free motion machine embroidery and in the past three years have been teaching fabric collage classes. Discovering fabric collage (2011) has truly liberated and captivated me. Please join me for this fun and colorful class in creating a beautiful juvenile garibaldi fish. Orange is the new fish!!
