In the Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster, a boy named Milo is always bored and doesn’t know what to do until……. he comes home from school and finds a tollbooth in his bedroom. On the tollbooth there is a note that says, ”TO MILO, WHO HAS PLENTY OF TIME.” Beside the tollbooth there is a little car. Milo doesn’t know what to do, so he decides to hop in. The tollbooth asks Milo where he would like to go. Milo isn’t sure what to say so the tollbooth says, “Take a look at your map.” Milo chooses to go to Dictionopolis, a place where words are honored.

SUMMARYSo, Milo puts his coin in the slot and is on

his way to Dictionopolis. As he is driving he comes across Expectations, the land of what people expect. He asks a little man if he is on the right road to Dictionopolis. The man tells him that if he is not on the right road to Dictionopolis, he is on the right road to somewhere. Milo is feeling a little tired so he decides to take a nap. When he wakes up he isn’t paying attention, takes a wrong turn and ends up in the Doldrums, a place where nothing gets done.

Page 4: THE PHANTOM TOLLBOTH

If it wasn’t for Tock, the watchdog, Milo would have been stuck in the Doldrums forever ever, ever, ever. After getting out of the Doldrums, Tock and Milo go on to Dictionopolis. They meet the king, Azaz, have a banquet and meet the Humbug. Then Milo, Tock and the Humbug go on their way to Digitopolis, a place where numbers are honored, to ask the Mathmagician if they can rescue Rhyme and Reason, the lost princesses. The Mathmagician asks if Azaz has agreed. Milo says, ”Yes”, and the Mathmagician decides to let them go. So, off they go to rescue the princesses.

YOU WILL HAVE TO READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT THE REST!!!!!!!

We recommend this book to people who are advanced readers and to people who are able to understand puns well. We rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because it is a little hard to understand because of all the puns. The words have more than one meaning. We like it because it is interesting and easy to picture it in our mind. It is a really good book.

A tollbooth is where you pay to drive on a toll road. Sometimes the tollbooth takes a picture of your car and then in a week or two, you will get a bill. The money you pay goes to the owner of the toll road for repairs.
