AcknowledgementsI must thank Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber for creating

The Phantom of the Opera both on stage and on thebig screen; it is his 2004 movie version of the tale thatI love best.

Also, I need to thank Lord Andrew for writing Love

Never Dies; Susan Kay, for writing Phantom; andmany members of the forums atPhantomoftheOpera.com; all of whom took whathappened next in a totally different direction, therebyinspiring me to write my own version.

My heartfelt thanks go out to Patrick Wilson for his

portrayal of Raoul, the Vicomte de Chagny in the 2004movie. He is the inspiration for the Raoul of my story.Patrick Wilson, youre my hero.

Gerard Butler, thank you as well for your portrayal ofthe Phantom himself. You are, indeed, a sexy beastin that role.

Of course, I cant leave out Emmy Rossum. You playedChristine Daae perfectly. Thank you for a stellarperformance!

Last, but certainly not least, I must thank my husbandBob for his patience and understanding while I wasobsessed with writing this, and for giving me somegreat ideas to get over a hurdle in the story line; my

sons, Robby and Sean, who put up with mommyscraziness; and Jen, my editor-friend and fellow writerwho helped me clean up the story so it waspresentable. (You can find Jens stories athttp://bernadettegardner2.blogspot.com/)

Raoul pushed the small boat forward as fast ashe could. He was exhausted, but he had to get

Christine out of the flooded cellars of the operahouse before the Phantom changed his mindand came after them. The monster knew thesecellars and passageways so well that he couldalmost be in two places at once. Raoul knew hecould not feel safe for either of them until they

were well away from the opera house, preferably out of Paris entirely.

No one knew his real name, or indeed, if heeven had one. He was known only as thePhantom of the Operaor theopera ghost.

To Christine, he had been the Angel of Musicuntil the night he spirited her away. ThePhantoms intent then had been to interfere inRaouls relationship with her and put an end to itbefore it could be rekindled.

He regretted not taking her more seriously whenshe first told him of this strange man living inthe opera houses dank cellars. He had thoughtit was just a young ladys nightmares and artisticimagination.

He couldnt have been more wrong.

Born with a horrible facial deformity, thePhantom had been shunned by everyone, including his own mother. Except for Mme. Giry, and Christine, that is. Thanks to Mme. Giry, hehad been able to live in that deepest cellar formany years now.

Christine Daae had been Raouls childhoodsweetheart until her father died and Mme. Girybrought her to the opera house. Over the nextten years, the Phantom had posed as the Angelof Music, whom her father had promised to sendonce he was in Heaven. In that guise, he trained

her to sing. He had taken advantage of aninnocent childs trust; preyed on her hopes anddreams.

If it were possible to hate another human beingmore than Raoul hated the Phantom, thatperson would surely burn to cinders with a

single glance. He wished he had finished it thatday in the cemetery when he had kicked awaythe Phantoms sword and had the upper hand, literally, ready to plunge his own sword into theother mans heart. Christine had stopped himthen. He had never asked why, but it almost

cost them everything. It was a mistake he wouldnot make again.

Raoul could feel her trembling as she clung tohis uninjured shoulder. She alternately watchedbehind them and in front of them, evidently

sharing his fear that the Phantom might changehis mind after all.

Mercifully, the path up and out of the cellarsfinally came in to view. He pushed the pole withwhat strength he had left to get the boat intothe small dock. He clambered out and reached

for her.Christine, your hand lets go!

Now that the crisis had passed, she appeared tobe in shock. He took her hand to guide her asshe blindly ran up the cobblestone ramp with

him. The clear, star-studded sky greeted themand they both took a deep breath of fresh air.

Pierre, Raoul waved frantically at hiscoachman, Help me get her inside the coach!Hurry!

They lifted her up and Raoul got in beside her, motioning for his driver to get them out of thereas quickly as he could.

He turned her to face him. Speak to me,please!

She appeared almost catatonic, her face a

blank, unreadable mask. It only took a momentfor all manner of emotions to flood her features.

He gathered her into his arms. Its all right, were safe now.

He comforted her as best he could as hewatched out of each window in turn. He wascertain some sort of ambush awaited.

Christine sobbed, Thank God were out ofthere. Im so sorry. Dear God I hope this isover!

Unable to console her, Raoul held her and lether cry it all out.

Their trial in that deepest cellar would remain asecret, hidden as deeply as the Phantoms lairitself.

Earlier that evening the Phantom had kidnappedChristine from center stage in front of a fullhouse of opera patrons. He caused thechandelier to drop and as it set fire to the operahouse, he had dragged her below. Mme. Giryhad helped Raoul go after them by showing him

the quickest route down to where the Phantomhad likely taken Christine.

As he made his way, he fell into one of thePhantoms traps and came close to drowning. He was in this weakened state when he finallyfound them.

The Phantom had been able to overpower himeasily. Tied up with a noose around his neck, hehad been forced to watch Christine decide

between spending the rest of her life with thePhantom, or his own death.

He pleaded with her to save herself, but shechose to save his life instead. She kissed thePhantom to say she would stay. She couldnt tellhim that she loved him, but she could agree to

live with him if hed allow Raoul to live.Somehow, this act of self-sacrifice had sotouched this creature of the dark that he had setthem both free. Take her, he said to Raoul.Forget me. It was almost as if he had given upon his own life. Surprisingly, his only conditionupon their release had been to keep his secretsand not tell anyone what they knew.

It wasnt long before Christine wore herself outand fell asleep. Raoul tried to stay awake aslong as he could, but exhaustion overruled him.He had already instructed his coachmen tomaintain top speed as long as possible withouthurting the horses and then take only a shortbreak at Buchelay to switch them out for a freshteam. One team could only go about 25 to 30miles at a time, and his home was close to 60miles outside of Paris.

Pierre Bernard, the driver of the team, glancedbehind into the compartment holding thecouple. He was running full steam for now butcouldnt push the animals too hard.

He turned and raised an eyebrow at Pascal. Iwonder what this is all about. His master withhis lady, both horribly disheveled and her in awedding dress no less, had just ordered a quickget-away to his home several hours outside ofParis as the opera house burned in their wake.

Pascal took a quick look as well and chewed onhis mustache thoughtfully. I dont know, Pierre, but from the looks of things Id say we best dowhat he said if we dont want to end up in thesame boat as them. He had no idea just howironic that statement was.

Henry, the youngest of them, stood on thebackboard of the coach. He was supposed tokeep a look out for any dangers behind them, but repeatedly, his gaze was drawn back to thelovely lady in the wedding gown.

It was a long journey, and they all had plenty oftime to consider a multitude of possibilities. Notone of them came close to the truth of thematter, and that was just as well.

Greeted by the sun, they finally reached theirdestination as they left the dark night behindthem.

Christine? Wake up, cheri. Were here. Raoul

gently shook her by the shoulder. She opened her eyes and then gave a suddenstart as the memory of the previous night andthe unfamiliarity of her surroundings rushed inon her.

    Raoul! Where are we?

It took a few moments for him to convince herthat they were, indeed, safely away from Paris.

He led her across the wooden back porch andinto the huge great room. A staircase that leadupstairs was across the room. The immense

brick fireplace stood on their left, and a door onthe right led to the kitchen.

Betsy, the housekeeper, rushed out of thatkitchen door to greet them. A short middle-aged

matron, she was pleasingly plump and, usually, infectiously cheery.

Monsieur! My goodness, look at the both ofyou! Betsy bounced on her toes with nervousenergy. You are in quite a state!

Betsy, this is Miss Daae. As you can see wevehad a very difficult night and would like to cleanup right now, if you dont mind too terribly. Hesounded hoarse and tired, and she looked veryconcerned for them, but for the moment therewas little he could do to reassure her.

I understand. Can I do anything? She wrungher dishtowel in her hands.

I think breakfast and some hot coffee would bewelcome. The three other men nodded inagreement.

Right away, of course, Monsieur! She rushedback into the kitchen, and the frantic rattling ofpots and pans assaulted their ears.

Raoul led Christine upstairs to the master suite. They were both still wearing their clothes fromthe night before and they were damp, cold, andquite dirty.

Take as long as you need. Ill go clean up aswell and wait for you downstairs. He gave her aquick kiss and then left the bedroom, closing thedoor behind him.

***Unsure of what to do first, Christine stared atthe door Raoul had just exited. It took a fewmoments to focus. She decided to investigatethe bathroom and timidly stepped into theadjacent room.

She was overwhelmed by the opulence. Anelegant cast-iron tub lined with shiny whiteporcelain caught her eye first; then the porcelainsink that was an even brighter white than thetub; both with brass fittings that shone like gold. She had never seen a water closet so beautifulas this one, or as big. It was practically a fullroom unto itself.

Cautiously, she filled the claw-footed tub withhot water. A small bottle of Shalimar sat on atable next to the tub. It was open, but barelyused. She hesitated to help herself to theperfumed bath oil as it came from the GuerlainHouse of Perfumes and was therefore quitepricey. As she only needed a little bit, though, she decided she could take a few drops withoutfeeling too badly. It didnt take much to create amarvelous scent. She stepped into the tub and

relaxed into the luxury of this heavenly escape. She was unable to relax for long. The events ofthe past day were far too fresh in her mind. She

suddenly felt the need to be back in Raoulscomforting presence.

A large, thick towel hung from a bar at the footof the tub. She quickly dried, and wonderedwhat in the world she could wear. The towelwas huge, but hardly suitable for polite

company. She was relieved to see that a lovely day dresslay on the bed for her. Not the most recentfashion, it was nonetheless quite beautiful.Three-quarter length sleeves flared on the lacydress, all done in varying shades of lilac.

Bathed and dressed, she felt more presentableand started back down the stairs. Raoul waswaiting for her anxiously and she reached out totake his hand.

That looks very nice on you, he said, indicating

the dress. Ive asked Pierre to go back to Parisand gather some of your things. He has a notefor Mme. Giry to help him.

Betsy once again came through the kitchendoorway. Breakfast is ready, Monsieur.

Thank you. Well have more room in the diningroom, so lets eat in there. He bowed Christinethrough to the next room. After you, MissDaae.

Christine gazed about in wonder. Is this whereyou live?

This is one of our Chagny country homes, yes. Were across the Seine from Les Andelys. Weown everything within this loop of the river outto the railroad tracks. Its about 8 square miles,

or 5,600 acres, more or less. Most of the familydoesnt come here often as its so out of theway. He held out a chair for her at the table.

Despite the lavish display of finery, the homealso managed to look cozy. Christine reallysmiled for the first time since her forced actingon stage the night before. Its beautiful, she exclaimed with awe.

Like in the great room they had just left, elegantbut comfortable furniture occupied the diningroom. Another fireplace, complete with a marble

mantle, warmed the area with a wood fire. This was my uncles estate until he passedaway, he explained. My aunt continued to livehere until she passed away, and then it came tome. I have lived here for the past few yearsnow, and if it pleases you He broke off

uncertainly as they both blushed. He hadessentially invited her to live with him eventhough they were not yet married. Christinealmost giggled.

Raoul turned to his housekeeper. Im surewere all ready for you if youd like to bringeverything in. Do you need any help?

Christine thought this made an acceptableattempt to cover his faux pas and tried to add tothe distraction.

Yes, Id be happy to help, she said as shestarted to stand up.

Now, miss, I wont hear of it! You just staythere and get comfortable.

Betsy must have assumed that they would all be

rather hungry after the previous nights trip. They shared an enormous omelet with cheeseand fresh mushrooms, and apple crpes. Coffeeand fresh-squeezed orange juice accompaniedthis small feast.

Where is your husband, Betsy? Raoul turnedto the woman. I was sure George would behere with you.

Oh, hes down at the stable, of course. He hadhis breakfast right before you arrived, in fact, and had just headed down to tend to thehorses.

It was plain that Betsy appreciated Raoulsthoughtfulness. Generally, servants were muchlike the furniture; ignored until needed for

something, and then expected to perform theirfunction perfectly at a moments notice.

Christine quickly finished up as Betsy stood toclear away the dirty dishes.

Thank you, Betsy. Raoul turned to Christine

and asked, Would you like to go rest? I canshow you around later.

Would you show me the rest of the house first? Then Ill rest, and you can show me the outsidelater.

As you wish. He turned to his men. You three

should get some rest. Pierre, I would appreciateit if you would head back to Paris this afternooninstead of tomorrow. The sooner you can getback here, the better.

Oui, Monsieur, Pierre replied. I will just take ashort nap then before heading back.

She followed Raoul as he led her through thehome. There was the vast kitchen, the toweringentrance hall, the lavish second floorbedrooms it was all far grander than anyhome she had ever seen. She felt more andmore uncomfortable with each new bit ofmagnificence that presented itself.

Raoul must have noticed her growing unease. Ihope you will feel completely at home here. Cequi est le mien est vous. What is mine is

yours. He then kissed her. It was just enoughof a kiss that everyone else (who, of course, watched all that went on) knew exactly what hisintentions were toward her.

She felt the color rise in her cheeks as they wentback upstairs to the master suite. Raoul was

careful to keep the bedroom door open. Hemust not want any of the hired help to get thewrong idea, she thought.

Make yourself at home. He waved his hand toindicate the suite of rooms. Is there anythingyou need?

She wondered if this beautiful place could everreally be her home. No, thank you, Ill be fine.Where will you be?

Ill be right next door. Please dont hesitate toask for anything you might need or want. He

gazed at her for just a moment longer, and thenhe was gone.

Do you feel up to a walk? The fresh air mightbe good for both of us. He did not move, butwaited for her to decide.

Ye-yes, that would be lovely, she stammeredquietly.

All right then. Ill wait downstairs while you getyourself together.

She allowed him to move off the bed and out ofthe room, then quickly dressed to follow him, unable to bear being alone a moment longerthan necessary.

The healing properties of nature workedwonders for her as they strolled about theenormous grounds of the estate. Christine noteda handful of shade trees next to the house itself.A large clearing surrounded the house, which inturn was surrounded by a brick wall. Thick

woods stood beyond that on all sides. There wasalso a stream babbling somewhere nearby.

The sun was starting to set as they walked tothe stable. Its so amazingly peaceful here. Ihavent been anywhere this beautiful in years. Not since father She stopped. She did not

want to take the conversation in that direction;not now.

He didnt seem to hear her last few words. Yes,Ive always loved it here. Perhaps we could go

riding in a day or two and I can show you therest of the grounds?

Id really like that. Neither of them mentionedhow long they might expect to be here. Can wesee the horses now?

Certainly! Right this way. He waved her to asmall arched bridge she hadnt noticed before. Itspanned the stream she heard. Beyond thestream was the stable. A middle-agedgentleman was busy tending to the horses justinside the wide-open double doors.

Monsieur! How good it is to see you! Georgeremoved his cap and bowed to the both ofthem. May I ask who this lovely young lady iswho accompanies you, sir?

George, this is Miss Daae. Christine, this isBetsys husband, George Durand. Good to see

you too! He reached out to shake hands andreceived a firm handshake in return.

George, like Pierre, was in his forties. He was inexcellent health from his years of hard work outin the fresh air. He was the picture of a salt-of-the-earth country Frenchman.

Well then, Miss Daae, Im guessing youd like tomeet our horses, am I right? His good naturewas evident and it was easy to see how he andBetsy made a good couple. Apparently she had

    ~ 11 ~

already warned him that Raoul and a guest hadarrived. He didnt seem the least bit surprised tosee them.

Yes, please, if you have the time, sir.

But of course! He motioned for them to follow

as he led them into the stable. Now this here is Reine Noire. Isnt she abeauty?

A sleek, black, well-muscled mare stood in thefirst stall. The horse studied the newcomer withinterest. Although not terribly large, her

movements were none-the-less far too gracefulfor a youngster.

The black queen, Christine murmured. Shewanted to pet the horse but was unsure how toapproach her.

Here, feed her this, she loves them. Georgehanded over a large, red apple.

She looked to Raoul for reassurance.

Shes really quite gentle, youll see, he saidencouragingly.

She showed the fruit to the animal. Reine sankher teeth into it, but Christine was so startled bythe strength of this gentle horse that she letgo and jumped back. The apple fell into thestall, where Reine proceeded to munch on it.

Thats all right, he told her. I hope youll getmore comfortable with her. He hesitated amoment, but then went on. I know this is a lotfor you to get used to, but you should know thatI bought Reine for you. Shes your horse now.

Eyes wide, she had no idea what to say. Shed

never owned so much as a cat.Raoul led her to the opposite stall. Id like youto meet my stallion. A tall dappled-gray horsestood in the doorway of the stall, nuzzling him.Hes looking for sugar cubes. George, do youhave any handy?

The caretaker went to a nearby cupboard andpulled out a small tin. Here you are then, sir.He gave a handful of the cubes to Raul whothen began to hand-feed them to the horse, oneat a time.

What is his name? She watched the horse pickup each cube from his masters hand. Imamazed at how gentle he is.

This is Reveur De Jour, or just Reveur forshort. He stroked the long nose affectionately.Hes been mine for a few years now, ever since

he was a colt. It was obvious the two kneweach other very well.

They seem so intelligent. She gazed around atall of the inquisitive heads now peering out oftheir stalls.

Would you like to feed him one? Raoul handeda cube to her. You see how he is with me. Hellbe the same with you as long as Im right here.

She looked back and forth between Raoul andReveur. If you say so... She tentatively offeredthe treat.

The horse eyed this new source of sweets andthen, ever so gently, took it from the palm of

her hand. She reached up to stroke him, andReveur leaned down and rubbed against herhand as if asking for the attention.

She patted him lightly. Hes so friendly! Whydid you name him Day Dreamer?

When I first met him, I would day dream aboutriding off into battle on him. Raoul chuckled athimself. A knight in shining armor, and all that.

Getting serious, he added, Just dont standbehind him, or any other horse, for that matter. They have an awfully strong kick and arentafraid to use it if they feel threatened frombehind.

She stared at the huge animal. Thank you forthe warning!

Come on, its getting dark. Raoul took herhand and led her back toward the house. Sheglanced back at Reine for a moment, still in aweof the beautiful creature.

To think that shes all mine... she shook herhead in amazement.

    What is it, chri?

Nothing, really, I just cant believe... Shestopped to face him. Thank you. Reine isbeautiful.

Youre more than welcome. I hope well get the

chance to ride often, I think youll like thegrounds here. Of course, he addedapprehensively, dont feel obligated to if youdrather not

I should be the one telling you that! I expectto be dragging you down to the stable as oftenas possible.Im glad to hear that. He visibly relaxed.Come on, then, Betsy gets grumpy if the foodgets cold before she can serve it. He winked ather and she knew he was teasing.

Well, then, she teased back, we certainlycant have unhappy help in the house, can we?

Actually, thats something Id really like to talkto you about later. Raouls tone was light, but

Oh, not to worry cher. Well talk after supper.

Wed best get inside then, she said, beforeBetsy comes to round us up like lost sheep.

Just then, the lady in question appeared at theback door. Well, look whos here! The lostlambs have come home.

We didnt mean to inconvenience you, honestly. Raoul shook with suppressedlaughter.

Mystified, Betsy asked, What did I say?

Nothing, dont mind us. Raoul grinned as hewaved her into the dining room. After you,

The informal dinner started with Bouillabaissewhich then gave way to Charolais steak withmushroom sauce, petits pois, and an enormous

loaf of country bread with fresh butter. The menate heartily as they enjoyed the excellent foodand each others company.

Betsy declined to join them at the table thistime. Ive already eaten while cooking, miss, what cook doesnt Thank you for the lovely

At a raised eyebrow from Raoul, Henry loweredhis eyes.

Oh, I dont know. I certainly enjoy singing.Uncomfortable with the attention, she didntknow what to say to this young man whoapparently found her to be quite the object of

interest.Perhaps you could sing for us sometime, mademoiselle? This came from Pascal Blanc, the oldest of the men. Now in his sixties, hiswhite hair, white mustache, and white beardmade him look like Father Christmas himself. Heregarded her with an almost fatherly affection ashe leaned back in his chair.

She bit her lip and blushed brightly. Perhaps.

Pascal had been with the family since beforeRaoul was born. He was one of those who had

kept an eye on them as they had wanderedabout as children.

I dont know if you remember me, LittleLotte he began.

Betsy returned carrying a large platter of smallice cream dishes, each filled to overflowing withcaramelized vanilla crme brle.

Oh, my! Christine caught herself before sheactually clapped over the dessert; it was herfavorite. Raoul must have said something, shethought. She took her time and ate slowly, enjoying every spoon full. She hadnt hadanything this decadent in quite some time.

***Raoul wanted to get some time alone withChristine before the day was over. As soon asshe finished her desert, he stood up and offeredhis hand. Would you care to join me on theporch for a brandy before retiring for the night?

Yes, please, that would be lovely. She placedher hand in his, and as he helped her to herfeet, he couldnt help notice just how tiny andfragile she really was.

Ill bring your drinks outside for you, shall I?Betsy was already reaching for the cordialglasses and the brandy decanter.

was an old joke between them for her to be soformal with him whenever he was that informalwith her. It was also a veiled reminder of theirrelative places in society; one they ridiculed as asilly notion since they were children.

He wanted to get right to the point and sat

down beside her to marshal his thoughts. Thepast few days no, weeks - had been hell forthem both and he wanted to move past it all asquickly as possible.

Christine, I have something Id really like to talkover with you tonight. Hed managed to alarm

her after all; she suddenly looked like a deerready to bolt.

Here you are, my dears! Saved momentarilyby Betsys arrival with their brandy, he thankedher and took the glass.

What kind of brandy is this? It smells lovely.Christine swirled her glass and inhaled again.

Why, this is a cherry cordial, miss, Betsyreplied cheerfully. Its a Heering cordial, one ofMonsieurs favorites, isnt that right?

Yes, thank you for remembering. He could seethat she was in no hurry to leave their presence,so he sipped the drink then said, That will beall for now, thank you. His tone was gentle butmade it clear that he would appreciate it if shetook the hint and left them alone.

Ill just leave you two alone then. Call me if youneed anything. She giggled lightly as shebustled back into the house.

Now be careful with this, Christine. He liftedhis glass. This is a high-quality cordial, whichmeans its likely to taste like cough syrup. Hechuckled at the face she made with her firsttaste.

Yes, it tastes just like Dr. Wistars Balsam ofWild Cherry. Her face twisted comically as shetried again. But it is very warming. I love thatfeeling.

He didnt want to spook her again, so he waitedfor her to speak first this time.

Raoul, Meg she must be worried sick aboutme! Oh, I do hope she is all right! All I canremember is the opera house burning behind us

as we leftHe placed a hand over hers. Dont worry, wellknow soon. Pierre should bring news when hegets back.

She kept sipping little bits of the cordial. Onceyou get used to the taste, this is rather nice. She took her hand out from under his, and put iton top of his in return. I appreciate all youredoing. Thats very thoughtful of you, to sendPierre after my things.

How could I do any less? He got down on hisknees before her so they were closer to eyelevel. Christine, I want to marry you as soon aspossible. Will you marry me right away? Nomore waiting? Ill explain to my parents later

Christine blinked in surprise. Yes, of course! She put her arms around his neck and drew himclose.

This was all the invitation he needed. He kissedher much like he had that night on the operahouse roof, when he had proposed to her. Herreturn kiss warmed him as much as the brandy.

He sat back on his heels and held her hand tohis lips. His eyes welled up as he attempted toconvey all that he felt. I know we both want toput the past behind us, but I want you to knowthis; what you did last night both on stage and

after I cant tell you how proud I am of you,how strong you were to do that. You couldntknow if he would keep his end of the bargain, but you took that chance for me. I dont seehow I can ever possibly

She placed a finger to his lips and spoke softly. You were willing to die for me, Raoul. Howcould I do any less? Her relief was almostpalpable. He could see that it had reallybothered her.

He caressed her face, and then brought out a

small jewelry box from his jacket pocket. Whenyour engagement ring was taken back on NewYears Eve He stopped, and tried again. Ihope that you will accept this as a suitablereplacement.

Neither of them wanted to talk about how it wasthat her first ring had been taken. They werenot likely to forget that night any sooner thanthey would forget last night.

That night had been the New Years Eve MaskedBall. She wore her engagement ring on a chain,a very pretty half-carat stone with almost three-quarters of a carat of smaller stones around it,made to look like a flower. She said she wantedto keep the engagement a secret. He hadntunderstood why, but he was too much in love toargue.

He soon found out why. The Phantom appearedat the ball costumed as Red Death. He snatchedthe ring and chain from around her neck, growled something about her still belonging to

him, and disappearing into a trap door in thefloor.

He jumped in after the Phantom, but wasunable to catch the man or find his own way outof the room in which he landed - a madhouse ofmirrors, all turning and reflecting the Phantom

as he moved about behind them. Mme. Giryfound Raoul and got him out, then at hisinsistence, told him what she knew of thePhantom.

This new ring was a two-carat teardrop diamondwith a solid gold setting. It was every bit asbeautiful as the first ring, which the Phantomhad given back to her just last night in hisattempt to get her to marry him instead. Whenthe Phantom had released them, she had askedto return the ring to him. He needs tounderstand clearly, she had said. Im saying

good-bye, for good. He fully agreed with thisdecision. Tonight it was time to start over with aclean slate.

Its gorgeous! She hesitated to pick it up, sohe took it from the box and placed it on her ringfinger, then sat beside her again.

I hope you dont mind, he said quietly, but Itook the liberty of asking Mme. Giry to send afew dresses for you to choose from for thewedding, just in case you agreed to move up

He hoped she understood what he was trying tosay. The Phantom had forced her to wear that

formal white wedding gown just last night andhe recognized that she may not be in any hurryto put on another one any time soon.

Im sure Ill be able to choose one. Her gentletouch on his arm reassured him. What else didyou have in mind?

Father Jacques lives reasonably nearby and heis ready and willing to perform the ceremonywith twenty-four hours notice. I could have himhere by tomorrow evening, if you wish. He putthe emphasis on you, leaving the decision upto her.

Oh, I do wish, but it might be fairer toeveryone else to wait a few days. Im sure Betsywill want to put on a full banquet, and she cantdo that on a days notice. Not to mention thatthe priest may be busy or the dresses may not

He gently leaned his forehead against hers and

kissed the tip of her nose. Youve made me avery happy man, Christine. Lets get you to bed.You need your rest if youre going to be ready toget married in just two days.

She finished her drink and, in her excitement, stood up too quickly. She leaned dangerously

and almost fell back onto the loveseat.Hold on there! He wrapped her in his arms tosteady her. Wouldnt want you to get hurt withme standing right here, how would that look?

I believe Im quite ready to retire for theevening, Monsieur Chagny, thank you.

Despite her words, he could tell that she wasntin any hurry to leave his embrace.

She looked completely drained, so he walkedher upstairs. The past few days had taken theirtoll on her, and he knew that the brandy likely

hit her hard as well.Betsy had left a soft, warm nightgown on thebed. He leaned against the door jam and waitedfor her to change clothes in the bathroom.

She came back into the room and stopped short. The filthy wedding dress she had thrown asidethat morning had caught her attention. Shewalked to it slowly and picked it up with a lookof dread.

There was a fire going in the fireplace to ward

off the evening chill. Raoul went to the windowand opened it a hands breadth, then silentlytook the gown from her. He moved to thefireplace and then looked back at her forapproval. When she gave it, he threw the dressinto the flames. Now that it was dry, it caught

fire and burned quite readily. The horrible stench of the burning taffetaembodied all that the dress represented. Theyheld each other close as they stood andwatched it disintegrate into ashes.

Betsy must have cleaned them uplast evening, she thought. Im sure no oneever expected that the clothes would be needed

this way.The smell of fresh cinnamon raisin bread waftedthrough the house. A mouth-watering aroma, itenticed her to head for the kitchen to see whatshe could do to help with breakfast.

Good morning, Betsy. That smells delicious. tsmaking me hungry! She sat on a chair at theservants kitchen table, resolved to at least giveBetsy some company while she worked. Willyou teach me how to make that?

Id be delighted to, miss! Whenever youre

ready, you just let me know. But first, we needto get some food in you, yes? Betsy served upa plate of warm buttered bread. Her eyes grewbig when she saw the sizeable diamond onChristines hand.

Obediently taking her cue, Christine ate whilechatting with Betsy about the little things thatmade up daily life here in the country. She hadgrown up at the opera house in the city andcouldnt imagine her life becoming much moredifferent.

How do you come about all of this food on suchshort notice? Christine asked. I didnt thinkyou knew the five of us were coming, and werequite a distance outside of Paris.

Oh, thats no problem. The Chagny family ownsso much land around here that they parcel out

bits of it to various farmers. The farmers pay aset amount every month to use the land, and inthese times, its most often paid in things likefood and such. Betsy went on explaining how

wasnt far behind. Raoul went about hisbusiness with an air of total innocence and fixeda strong cup of coffee for him, and a lighter, sweeter version for her.

Here you are. Ive put honey in it, just the wayyou like. He sat down at the table and reachedfor the platter of bread.Thank you, she murmured. She started on hercoffee and waited to see if he would bring upthe subject of the wedding with Betsy. He didntmake her wait.

Christine stopped twirling and looked at Mme.Giry in disbelief. Was she teasing?

In reply to her unspoken question, Mme. Girystood and began hanging the dresses in thewardrobe.

Meg hid behind her hand as she giggled. Imsorry Christine, but you look so funny with yourmouth hanging open like that.

Raoul busied himself with overseeing the

The flowers arrived around noon and Meg wentto see what she had to work with. I promise

you it will be beautiful. Ill be back in plenty oftime to help you get dressed.

I know it will, and thanks. She watched Megleave to work her own brand of magic.

Now what do I do? Without Meg there shewas suddenly very tired. The lack of sleep was

catching up with her and she had a good four tofive hour stretch of waiting. She fought it,fearing more nightmares, but soon fell asleep inthe quiet of her room.

Meg was downstairs putting the finishingtouches on corsages, bouquets, and garlands.Pretty ribbons and fragrant flowers wereeverywhere. She barely noticed Henry as heheaded upstairs.

No one else was in the house besides the

women in the kitchen. Henry had made someexcuse to return to the house and the othermen had paid him little mind.

He stopped outside the door to the master suiteand listened carefully to see if Christine wasawake. Silently, he opened the door just wideenough to see, and then watched her sleep.

Henry had the great misfortune of having fallenin love with Christine. As one of Raouls

servants, he had been around them a lot inParis. He knew her heart belonged to Raoul andthere was nothing to be done about that. Still,he couldnt help but dream of what might havebeen had the Vicomte not decided to marrybelow his station.

He heard footsteps on the stairs and quicklymoved on to his own room up on the third floor.Meg appeared, too preoccupied to notice him ashe left the hallway.

She knocked lightly on the door as she enteredthe room. Ive brought lunch. Are you hungry?

Christine sat up and tried to rub the sleep fromher eyes. It had been a deep, dreamless sleep, and she felt much better for it.

Thanks, Meg. She reached for the plate oflittle sandwiches, accompanied by fresh fruit and

wine. She finally felt hungry and joined herfriend who was eating enthusiastically.

Christine groaned. I didnt ask him to spend somuch money, honest! She washed down thelast of her sandwich with the rest of her glass of

wine. What time is it?Meg pulled out her little pocket watch from herbreeches pocket. Looks to be about fouroclock, she said lightly.

Four oclock? Christine pushed away the tray

of food and almost tipped over the bottle ofwine as she jumped up. I should start gettingready, shouldnt I? A bath first She headedfor the bathroom with Meg close behind her.

Here, let me do it. Im not sure you couldmanage it right now. Meg laughed as she

turned the taps and tested the watertemperature. I must admit, I envy you. Motheralways says that married life is no picnic, butsomehow, I think yours is going to come prettyclose out here in the country with Raoul.

Christine leaned on the edge of the tub and took

a few steadying breaths. It wouldnt do to faintnow! Thanks, Meg. You really are the bestfriend a girl could ask for. Go on, Ill be fine.

Henry felt sorry for himself, so as he headed

back down the second floor hall, he didnt reallypay attention to anything else. Just as hepassed the master suite, Meg came out with herarms full of dishes, and he walked right in toher.

Im so sorry, mademoiselle! He made a grabto catch the falling dishes and she did the same. They managed to save the carpet from whatwould otherwise have been some pretty awfulwine stains. Would you like for me to takethese down to the kitchen?

That would be a big help, thank you. Shehanded him the glasses and the bottle of wine, then headed down with the platter of food.

Christine finished her bath and got as far as shecould with her undergarments before Megreturned to find her struggling with the corset.

Here, let me Meg laced her up in a thrice, then helped her get in to the wedding gown.

You look so beautiful, Meg said wistfully. Sheplaced the ring of flowers she had fashioned fora veil, yards of tulle hanging down the back, ontop of Christines long, dark curly hair.

Thats sweet of you to say. She tried not to letthe butterflies in her stomach get the best ofher. Lets get you in to your gown. Im sure youare going to look every bit as beautiful.

Hardly, but thank you! She retrieved her dressfrom across the hall.

If only some handsome young man thought

so! Meg lowered her eyes in embarrassment.Im sorry; I dont want to take away from yourbig day, Christine. I know youll be there for mewhen my turn comes.

Of course I will! She raised the bouquet thatMeg had put together for her. I just hope I cando as well with the flowers as you.Meg picked up her pocket watch from her pile ofclothes. Its 5:30, Father Jacques and themayor should be here any time now!

Christine plopped onto the bed. God, Im so

If I dont pass out in the middle of things, youmean!

The moments ticked by. They heard FatherJacques coach pull up to the house. The othermembers of the household greeted him and themayor. The church pianist, Mme. Rousseau, hadaccompanied them.

Mme. Rousseau was a tiny, elderly Irish ladywho still retained her red hair along with herlove of whiskey in her coffee. It was often notedthat she drank coffee at all hours of the day.

Father Jacques sounded like a very pleasantman and Christine exhaled in relief. At least she

wouldnt be intimidated by a strict priest onceshe got down there. The mayor was a skilledpolitician, so of course he would know how to besociable. She thought that most politicianswould make great actors, but in the mayorscase, she would reserve judgment until she got

to know him.The sounds of people murmuring and millingabout downstairs lasted for several minutes. Finally, the soft sounds of the family pianoplaying a hymn floated up to them. Lightfootsteps approached from across the hall.

Christine, Meg it is time. Mme. Giry tappedon the door and then opened it.

They approached the head of the stairs andMme. Giry started down first. Meg followed onceher mother reached the landing.

Mme. Rousseau began playing a weddingmarch. All eyes turned to the top of the stairs.Christine could not see them, but she knew they

were all waiting for her to make herappearance. She closed her eyes and picturedthe scene; the priest and the mayor, the altar,Meg, George, Raoul

She took one last, long look at her bouquet oftwo dozen roses. Twelve red, twelve white, all

interspersed randomly. Babys breath andgreens filled it out to look almost too big for herto carry. Red and white ribbons woundthroughout and dangled from the end. Shewanted to remember this moment forever.

Come on, Christine, think of it as opening

night She made it down the first half of thestairs and committed to memory the beautifulgarlands of flowers that lined the railing. Shereached the landing and turned to make herfinal descent.

She paused for just a moment and then shesaw Raoul. He stood in front of the flower-ladenaltar and looked more handsome than ever. Hewas wearing his Navy officers dress uniform, hishair tied back in a black ribbon, just like NewYears Eve. He, too, wanted to create a new

memory with an older image.Christine had asked Pascal to give her away. Hewaited for her at the bottom of the stairs andthen walked her over to Raoul, passing throughthe displays of flowers Meg had set up aroundthe room. He placed her hand in Raouls hand,

and his eyes got misty. I remember when youwere both so young He sat down next toMme. Giry and pulled out his handkerchief toblow his nose rather loudly.

The few guests sat down. There was just thefive house staff, the mayor, the priest, the

pianist, Meg, and Mme. Giry; but to Christine, itwas the perfect little wedding they had bothtalked about over the few months of theirengagement.

Later, she could only remember how nervousshe was standing there next to Raoul. Mayor

Laurent was first with the (thankfully short)legally binding agreement. Father Jacques thenperformed the wedding mass. She was afraid

When it came time to face each other andexchange their vows Christine forgot to hand offher bouquet to Meg. After a quick coursecorrection (and some light laughter amongst the

guests) she was ready to place her hands intoRaouls and say I do.

Neither Christine nor Raoul had any doubts oftheir love for each other after that night. Tohave and to hold, for better or worse, insickness and in health, till death do we part Ido. She could hear the conviction in his voice. It was Christines turn. I do, too. Her eyesnever left his.

Then by the power vested in me, Je vousdclare mari et femme. I now pronounce you

man and wife. You may kiss the bride. FatherJacques took a step back to stand by the mayor, allowing the new couple to be the completecenter of attention.

Raoul tried to be proper about it in front of thesmall crowd, but then she put her arms around

Soon Betsy called them to the formal diningroom. Raoul saw that Meg had decorated hereas well with more garlands of red and whiteflowers. She had then taken the leftovers andarranged a beautiful centerpiece.

He picked up the two glasses of wine that were

set out for them and handed one to Christine. As per custom, the wine in each glass was froma different vineyard. It didnt matter that bothvineyards belonged to the Chagnys.

The couple then poured these together into athird, empty glass to mix them together. Last,

they each drank from that same wine glass as asymbol of their union.

Betsy had really outdone herself this time.Onion soup topped with melted cheese startedthe meal, followed by lamb in mint sauce withpotatoes. They passed around loaves of bread

Raoul stood up. Thank you, George. Im sureour years together will be all the better with youand Betsy here.

Betsy then carried in the wedding cake. Threelayers high, it was covered with white icing withdark green ivy drawn around each layer, andtopped by candied violet petals scattered allover. A pair of small bells hung from an arch onthe top of the cake.

She tapped the bells with a spoon. Everyoneturned their full attention to the bride andgroom.

I put my trust in you to attend to our guests. His smile was quite jovial, and she took up thechallenge quite cheerfully.

Once all of the buttons were undone she stoodand he helped her out of the gown. It slid tothe floor at their feet with a faint swish.

They allowed their lips to travel wherever they

chose to go, and she began to undress him.The uniform jacket was already gone. The highneck had covered the rope burns, unwelcomereminders of all they had been through.

George put his hand on Raouls shoulder. Iunderstand, sir. Well talk later about somearrangements Id like to make for the safety of

your property. Now, what is it I can do for you, since I so rudely interrupted your purpose forcoming down here in the first place?

Oh, right. I was going to take Christine ridingthis afternoon and show her the rest of thegrounds. Now Im not so sure thats a goodidea. But she did seem to be looking forward toit. Id hate to disappoint her over a note and aflower.

How about you take Pierre along with you? Youcan say that youre looking for anything thatneeds fixing on the property so the men cantake care of it. Ill have a few things for him tolook for as well.

Raoul nodded. If Christine does not object toomuch thats exactly what well do.

He followed George down to the fire pit next to

the stream and watched as he set the noteablaze. The rose was too fresh to burn well butthe ribbon went up in smoke the moment ittouched the flames.
