Emily Murdoch is a 17 year old young lady whoon a daily basis deals with the effect of living withMultiple Sclerosis. However she is not one to let ithold her back and is rapidly turning into a verypromising dressage rider. She has had a brief butimpressive dressage career to date with both theRiding for the Disabled (RDA) representing Staffordand District Group and British Para Dressage Emilyis currently a student at South Staffordshire College(Rodbaston Campus).

To compete in Para Dressage Emily was assessedby a Paralympic Classifying Physiotherapist asa Grade III rider in March 2013. Shortly after shequalified for the RDA National Championshipswhere she won the Junior Section in her Gradeand the Open section with her Dressage to Musicscoring 70% and above. In addition Emily hasbeen kept very busy qualifying for Able BodiedDressage Championships and also attending ParaDressage Development classes and competitions

where she has regularly achieved exceptionalresults. She has qualified to compete at the BritishPara Dressage Winter Dressage Finals at HartpuryCollege, Gloucestershire in March 2015.

Emily’s dream is to represent Great Britain in thenext Paralympics at Rio 2016. To help her have thepossibility of achieving this dream she needssupport, both practical and financial. Such is herpromise that she has on loan a fabulous dressagehorse worth in the region of £18,000 plus supportfrom her family and close friends. The successfulParalympic rider and Staffordshire man LeePearson CBE is coaching Emily.

Can You Offer A Friendly Face and SupportFor An Older Person?

It’s cold, days are short, and the colds andcoughs are doing the rounds. Some olderpeople (and not so old) are in danger of notseeing people on a regular basis and gettingquite lonely. Do you think you could help –our new Care Navigator volunteer roles canprovide a great opportunity to learn more abouthealth and community services in your area,and know that you are helping older peoplefind out what is available to them locally.

Age UK South Staffordshire is working withSouth Staffordshire District Council, and SouthEast Staffordshire and Seisdon PeninsularClinical Commissioning Group (CCG) toprovide a pilot Care Navigation service in sixgeneral practices (out of I8 in the CCG area).

The aim of the service is to provide ‘supportedsignposting’ to older patients identified asbeing vulnerable, lonely or socially isolatedthrough volunteer led support, and is availableto people over 65 referred by their GP service.

The aim will be to provide volunteers withcomprehensive knowledge about what is onoffer to older people from the communityand charity sector (in particular) support thatis often not known or visible to the practices.The volunteers provide short term supportto enable this group of patients to accessthese services as appropriate.

ZOE JUMPS 10,000FT FORMIDLANDSAIR AMBULANCE

Zoe Roberts (16), a sixth form pupil at BlessedWilliam Howard Catholic High School, raised £645for the Midlands Air Ambulance by completinga 10,000ft tandem sky dive from Tilstock Airfieldin Whitchurch, North Shropshire.

Zoe completed the dive with her two brothers Ben(22) and John (20) to mark the 10 year anniversaryof their father’s death. The siblings named theircampaign ‘Jump for John Ten Years On’ in memoryof their father, John Roberts Snr, who wastransported to hospital in the air ambulancefollowing a fatal motorbike accident.

“It was a truly amazing experience to jump outof the plane, and I had to go first which was reallyscary! I am delighted with the money we raisedand that we were able to mark the anniversaryof our fathers’ passing with such a big event.We were really touched by the level of supportwe got from so many people.” said Zoe. Christmas has now been and gone and the chancesare many of us will be regretting a few weeks ofover-indulgence on mince pies, Christmas puddingand perhaps the odd mulled wine. It’s at thispoint we start thinking about the coming year andour latest New Year’s Resolutions. For the mostpart they will include a ‘health kick’, probablygetting fit or more likely lose some weight. Howeverfor many these resolutions don’t last and we fallback into our old ways rather quickly.

Generally the idea is to go ‘cold turkey’ from theoff and cut out all perceived bad foods and replacethem with anything green in the belief that this willbe the new you and get you your desired physiquewithin weeks. Yet the biggest issue with thisapproach is that for the majority it is unsustainablebeyond a few days, unless you have the requiredwillpower!

When it comes to building your new diet, thekey question to ask is whether or not you cansee yourself eating the same way in the comingweeks, months or even years? If the honest answeris no, then the chances are you will not stick to itand inevitability end up back where you started.So it is better to make small positive changes toyour daily habits (remember motivation will getyou started but it’s the habits that keep you going)and create a ‘new normal’, make better choicesmore often as nothing beats consistency when itcomes to successful changes to health and shape.

Use the following tips to get you started;

• Be prepared- You know how it goes “fail toprepare…”, so where possible have a plan in placefor where your next meal is coming from, e.g. if youdon’t have time to prepare breakfast in the morningdo it the night before so it’s ready, you’ll be less likelyto reach for something quick and easy.

• Eat lean protein with everymeal- protein increases satiety,meaning you’ll be satisfied forlonger, plus if you are tryingto lose some body fat, proteinbecomes even more important.

• Eat veggies with every meal- pretty much everybodyshould be eating more vegetables and would benefitfrom it. The importance of veg goes without saying!

• Variety- use a wide variety of foods and cookingmethods in your diet, this will help limit boredomand keep you enjoying food.

• Don’t drink calories- a regular 330ml can of colawill contain 139 calories (all from sugar), whereas thediet alternative has just 1. So one regular can per daywill increase your weekly calorie total by 973!What a waste.

WHAT A YEAR FOR THE AIR TRAININGCORPS PENKRIDGE SQUADRON!

Passed two training classifications, completed a glidingscholarship, went on an overseas camp, passed 2BTEC’s, played drums in the band when on paradeand got promoted, let me tell you about it.

I joined the cadets when I was 13 years old, due tonew rules people can now join at 12, and havetaken part in countless activities including studyingand passing the classification training set out by theAir Cadet organisation. The training is not hard asit’s all done on the computer and there are plentyof other cadets and staff to help if you get stuck. Thisyear I passed the Master Cadet and Instructor Cadetcourse’s which is as high as I can go.

The gliding scholarship was at RAF Tern Hill andinvolved 10 hours of instruction. The gliders used bythe cadets are powered by a small engine so that theycan stay up for longer and glide when required. 10 hoursof instruction is quite intense but the instructors arehighly qualified and very capable. Having passed thecourse I now have “Glider Pilot” wings on my uniform.

Having already attended camps at UK based RAFstations as well as having passed the requiredclassifications meant that I could put my name forwardand apply for an overseas camp. In past yearscadets from my squadron have been to Cyprus butI got selected and had a fantastic time for a week

in Gibraltar. As well as visiting all the various siteson the base we also got to go on a tour around anuclear submarine that was in port. It wasn’t allwork, we played sports virtually every day andalso had trips into Spain.

If you were in Penkridge on Remembrance Sundayyou will probably have seen/heard the Squadronleading the parade. This is an important eventfor us and we always prepare for it not just inpracticing our drill but also the attention we give toour uniforms so that we are as smart as possible.

These opportunities are not exceptional, all recruitswill have the chance to do similar exciting thingsproviding they stay in the cadets and put the effortinto activities. Above is what I’ve done this year butother cadets have done other interesting activities;radio, sport, DofE, modelling etc.
