Splitrock Receives A Facelift. Splitrock,. also. known. as. the. Burns-Klein. House,. at. 2815.Wooldridge,. is. the. oldest. home. in. Pemberton. Heights.. Built. in.1893,.it.predates.the.development.of.the.neighborhood.by.30-plus.years...Its.owners.are.planning.a.restoration.effort.intended.to.take.the.house.closer.to.its.original.appearance.. The. house. was. built. by. Scottish. immigrant. and. stonemason.Thomas. F.. Burns.. . Burns. immigrated. to. Austin. to. work. on. the.railroad. and. married. a. few. years. later.. . He. eventually. became. a.successful.businessman,.operating.the.Capitol.City.Marble.Company.on.Sixth.Street.. Originally,.Splitrock.faced.Shoal.Creek...The.1912.photograph.of.Splitrock.shows.its.early.façade,.when.it.faced.the.creek,.while.another.p h o t o g r a p h.from. the. same.e r a . s h o w s . a.r e c r e a t i o n a l.o p p o r t u n i t y.offered. by. the.rustic.trail.along.Shoal.Creek.near.the.house.. The.home.was.reoriented.in.the.1 9 2 0 s , . w h e n.Wooldridge.Drive,.then.known.as.Splitrock.Avenue,.was.developed...The.home.is.rectangular,.with.a.hipped.roof...It.was.built.following.a.traditional.center.hall.design,.with.three.rooms.on.each.side.of.the.hall...Bedrooms.were.located.under.the.tall.roof.upstairs...The.east.wall.of.the.center.hall.was.enclosed.in.1911.when.a.bathroom.was.added...In.the.1920s,.porches.were.added.to.the.east.and.west.side.of.the.house...A.workroom.and.storage.area.was.added.to.the.north.end.of.the.house.in.the.1950s...Austin’s.first.in-ground,.free-form.swimming.pool.(not.made.by.forming.and.pouring.concrete).was.added.in.1953...Despite.these.changes,.the.house.has.maintained.its.original.roofline,.siding,.and.windows.on.the.north,.south,.and.west.sides.... Also.of.interest,.the.tenth.largest.tree.in.Austin,.an.ancient.live.oak.and.official.Austin.Bicentennial.tree,.grows.next.to.Splitrock.. Splitrock.has.been.in.the.same.family.since.1945...Jayne.Klein,.who.purchased.the.house.with.her.husband.Joseph.that.year,.passed.away.in.July.2008...Their.daughter.Judie.Tasch.and.her.family.now.own.the.home...The.Tasch.family.is.beginning.their.restoration.of.Splitrock.by.replacing.the.front.porch.with.a.design.closer.to.that.

They.get.to.see,.feel,.taste,.and.hear.things.about.people.and.cultures.that.are.typically.quite. different. from. what. they. know. in.Austin...They.make.new.friends.and,.in.the.process,.learn.simple.yet.profound.lessons.in.understanding,.acceptance.and.appreciation.of.cultural.diversity... Kathryn.Anderson,.the.founder.of.Camp.Amigas. for. Girls,. moved. to. Pemberton.Heights. in. 1960,. and,. except. for. 8. years.in.New.Orleans,.has. lived.here.ever. since...Her. parents,. Genie. and. Bob. Miller,. who.still. reside. on. Gaston,. used. to. take. their.family..for.a.couple.of.weeks.every.year.to.Cuernavaca.where.they.nurtured.a.love.and.

Heights. means. allot. to.Kathryn.. “I. love.being. able. to. look.at. the.houses.on.these.streets.and.remember.who.lived.in.which.ones—and.where.we.used.to.

play.when.we.were.little.”. “On.Preston.Avenue,.neighbors.are.friends...Most.of.the.people.living.on.the.street.know.one. another. thanks. to. the. twice-yearly.barbecues.hosted.by.Homer.Hutcheson,.the.96-year-old. senior. statesman.of.our. street...We.also.try.to.organize.a.progressive.dinner.twice.a.year…where.neighbors.can.visit.as.they.move.among.four.host.houses.”. While. she. taught. her. children. a. love. of.Pemberton.Heights,.she.also.made.sure.they.understood. that. other. places. and. people.existed.that.were.different.but.good,.too.. A. passionate. commitment. to. education.has.always.been. important. to.Kathryn..At.Newcomb.College,.Tulane,.she.earned.a.BA.in.Art.History.and.Elementary.Education,.a.certificate.of.early.Childhood,.and.an.MA.as.a.Reading.Specialist...Nowadays,.during.

The.girls.come.who.come.to.Camp.Amigas.range. in.age. from.about.6.to.about.11.years.and.approximately.15.percent.of.them.are.on.scholarship...During.the.course.of.a.summer.many.local.schools.are.represented...Some.campers.arrive.speaking.no.Spanish...Some.speak.no.English...It.doesn’t.matter.because.every.sentence.uttered.during.camp.is.spoken.in.both.languages.. Camp.days.begin.at.1.pm,.with.a.short.session.in.the.Anderson.living. room. where. the. girls. are. divided. into. three. groups.. .The.groupings.vary.from.day.to.day,.so.the.campers.can.meet.and.interact.with.all.of.the.others;.then.the.activities.begin…One.group.might.play.a.game.like.Loteria—a.bingo.like.game.where.vocabulary.is.the.focus..They.can.win.prizes—all.of.which.originate.from.south.of.the.border.... Another.group.will.adjourn.to.the.kitchen.where.they. learn.to.prepare. a. traditional. recipe;. like. Budin. de. Pan. (Bread. Pudding).

(Tortillas)—and,. along. the. way,. learn. the.appropriate.words.for.ingredients.and.processes...A.third.group.will.head.to.the.porch.to.explore.and.work.at.arts.and.crafts.particular.to.a.region.such.as.making.corn.husk.dolls.or.sewing.tortilleras.(tortilla.holders).. In.addition.to.the.“learning.by.doing”.approach,.Camp.Amigas.also.invites.outsideSpeakers.to.share.interesting.stories.of.life.in.a.Latin.country...“The.talks.are.short,.maybe.about.five.minutes.long,.but.the.campers.get.to.hear.about.things.they.might.never.imagine…one.lady.talked.about.what.it.was.like.to.grow.up.in.Cuba,.sleeping.under.palms.in.order.to.avoid.getting.wet...The.campers.were.amazed”,.says.Kathryn.. “Another.speaker.demonstrated.how.to.fold.a.towel.so.as.to.be.able.to.carry.a.water.jug.on.her.head.....After.the.talk,.the.girls.practiced.it.themselves...They.loved.it”. The.young.girls.are.not.the.only.ones.who.learn....Kathryn.recruits.about.6.“Counselors”.for.each.week’s.session,.ranging.in.age.from.middle.school.to.late.20’s...Some.of.these.young.women.are.already.are.bi-lingual.or.have.lived.or.studied.in.a.Spanish.speaking.country,.while.others.are.studying.Spanish.in.school..Working.with.Kathryn.they.get.the.benefit.of.training.and.experience.in.experiential.learning.and.also.group.leadership.skills.... One.event.scheduled.every.day.is.swimming.at.Kathryn's.parents’.

....L.L..(Luther).Massey.came.from.Kentucky.to.Austin.in.the.early.1900’s. and. established. what. became. a. very. successful. highway.construction.company...The.L.L..Massey.Company.worked.on.the.dam.at.Inks.Lake.as.the.Highland.Lakes.were.in.their.developmental.stage,.and.on.historic.Route.66,.built.between.1919.and.1933...The.company.also.built.many.highways.and.roads.around.Austin.. In. 1936,. Luther. and. his. wife. Dosha. lived. in.Travis. Heights.while. their.new.home.was.being.built.at.1305.Northwood..Page.Southerland.designed.the.house,.and.the.Weise.Brothers.constructed.the.two-story.brick.residence.with.a.one-car.garage.on.the.east.end.of.the.house,.and.a.two-car.garage.on.the.west.end.with.an.apartment.above...The.Masseys.chose.this.design.because.they.planned.to.live.there.for.the.rest.of.their.lives,.and.a.live-in.nurse.could.eventually.move.into.the.garage.apartment.to.take.care.of.them.in.their.elderly.years.. Artist. Peter. Mansbendel,. a. Swiss. woodcarver. who. became. the.toast.of.Austin,.was.commissioned.to.carve.the.fireplace.mantle...It.was.one.of.his.last.creations.before.he.died.in.1940...Mansbendel.has.numerous.works.on.the.U.T..campus.and.in.residences.around.Austin,.including.Laguna.Gloria.Art.Museum.(for.Clara.Driscoll’s.

Holland.Page,.another.very.successful.contractor,.got.his.start.as.a.teenaged.mule.trader.in.Red.Rock,.Texas.. .Page’s.first.contracts.were.for.furnishing.men.and.mules.for.maintenance.projects.for.the.Texas.Highway.Department...Page.moved.his.business.to.Austin.in.1929,.and.became.one.of.the.largest.contractors.in.the.U.S..during.the.1940’s,.50’s,.and.60’s..Page.built.several.bridges.in.West.Texas.near.the.McDonald.Observatory;.they’re.still.in.use.today...Many.current.contractors.got.their.start.with.Holland.Page.. Holland.and.Nelle.lived.in.the.house.for.30.years...Jim.and.Jare.Smith.owned.it.for.three.years.before.Carl.and.Karen.Teel.purchased.it. in. 1978.. . . Karen. was. Austin’s. first. woman. pediatrician,. and.passionately.advocated.the.creation.of.Children’s.Hospital.of.Austin,.which.opened.in.1988,.and.the.Dell.Children’s.Medical.Center.of.Central.Texas,.which.opened.in.July.2007.... Carl.Teel.taught.piano.lessons.to.many.local.children.in.this.home.that.they.lived.in.for.29.years...Tragically,.Carl.Teel.died.suddenly.in.2009..Carl’s.funeral.took.place.on.the.same.day.that.the.house.received.its.historic.designation.from.the.city,.and.a.name.change.to.The.Massey-Page-Teel.House.has.been.submitted.to.the.city.. Current.owners.are.John.and.Amy.Sheffield.who.moved.to.Austin.from.Connecticut,.where.John.is.an.investment.banker.

Drowning is the leadingcause of unintentional

Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury-related death ages 1-14.

DROWNING WILL AFFECT YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW

Most children are out of sight or missing for less than 5 minutes and usually in the presence of 1 or both parents.5min

Drowning occurs in as little as 2 minutes.

Most children die who are submerged for as little as 6-10

Irreversible brain damage occurs in as little as 4 minutes.
