Her mom would sit down on Ally's bed and tell her a story. She would try all sorts of stories to help Ally fall asleep. Shewould tell stories about kings and queens, creatures fromdistant lands, and great moments in professional sports. Ofall the stories she would tell, only one type worked. Thesewere the stories of the animals from the Peacock Republic.

The Peacock Republic was home to all kinds of animals. Allof which are familiar to us, yet different. There were thesnow dolphins. They gave the Gulf of Snow Dolphins itsname. The snow dolphins came to the coast every winter, when the snow daisies were in full bloom.

They came to smell the fragrant flowers and help spreadthe pollen along the coast. At the end of every winter, thedolphins went back to sea. The next year brought moresnow daisies along the coast for everyone to enjoy.

Besides the snow dolphins, Sam the Stingray also lived in theGulf. Sam was afraid of the bigger fish, but he felt protectedwhen his snow dolphin friends were around. When wintercame, and the snow dolphins left for the coast, Sam was leftall alone.

Worried about the bigger fish, he thought of ways to protecthimself. One day, he decided to wear a disguise to scare offthe bigger fish. He tried to look like a pirate, but he hadnever actually seen one. Instead of being scared, the biggerfish laughed.

On the other side of the Republic, in the Orange Desert, lived Leroy the Lion. Unlike Sam the Stingray, he wasn'tafraid of the other animals. He didn't bother them, and theydidn't bother him. He loved lying in the hot sand under thehot sun all day long. When it got hot enough, his eyes would turn as red as hotsauce. Besides resting in the sun, he liked to watch his friend,Bucky the Camel Tiger, run around her corral.

Ally was always comforted by these stories. She felt lessworried as her mom would describe the animals to her. Sherealized that everyone worries and has problems, but it wasokay to get her mind off things that kept her up at night.

It could be listening to a story or just talking to someonewho cares. Then she could sleep and tomorrow would be anew day.
