Los Banos High School Issue #12 May 2016 THE PAWPRINT NEWS Prom 2016 By: Alondra Arias On April 23rd, the juniors and seniors of Los Banos High School were dressed very formally and amazing as they attended their prom. The location took place in Stevinson at The Double T Ranch with the theme of “Country Chic.” From gold dresses to black, to two pieces to tuxes, everyone made sure they were looking their best for this night. The seniors and juniors arrived to The Double T Ranch at approximately 5 o’clock and settled in. As we waited for our dinner, we all killed time by taking our prom pictures, capturing memories at the photo booth, and just lingering around and socializing. After dinner was served and everyone ate, that is when the real fun was about to begin. Everyone danced the night away, including Mr. Hollcraft and Ms. Richardson. Mel & Adam were also the winners for Prom King & Queen. So congratulations to them both! This night was everything I expected and more. Seniors, this is it. We are coming to the end. I am honored to be a part of this graduating class and experience prom with all these people. It’s an event us seniors will look back on and just reminisce of it all. We can now scratch prom off our list and look forward to the next senior activities we all have left with each other. Let’s make it as memorable as prom.

The Los Banos Spring fair is the highlight of the year. A lot of Los Banos high school students all year long raise animals to sell at the fair; the high school students raise animals, from rabbits to cattle. They bring them to the fair to auction them off. How it works is that most animals are sold by the pound. The high school students in a group called the FFA where they learn about raising animals for either sale or for product. For example when you buy an animal at the fair you get to choose to either get it butchered or to keep it for use. If you buy a cow you can either get it butchered for beef or just have it to have it milked and make cheese. There is a bunch of things you can do at the fair. For example you can just walk around with a group of friends and enjoy the rides. The food at the fair is always is the best; the more it’s fried, the better. Always remember to wear sunscreen because it gets pretty sunny. For children there is a group of students that do “Little Hands”, “Little Hands”

is where children can learn about different animals at the fair. Also they hold a petting zoo and children can also ride ponies. The fair is filled with adorable animals just walking around; also the cutest attraction is the All Alaskan pig races. Fun things to do at Spring Fair! By: Liz Sanchez

On Friday, April 29th our swim team hosted the WAC championship at home. The meet was all day and had perfect weather. The Varsity girls who went 5-1 had a couple of girls who qualified for sections. The girls relay team qualified and Savannah Graham and Alex Marquez qualified for individual events. “I was upset with the way I performed. I wasn’t having the best day, my times were the worst I’ve ever swam.” said Savannah. “But I’m glad we made it to sections.” The Varsity boys, who also went 5-1, had their relay qualify. Alex Marquez, Samuel Vanderpoel, Anthony Machado, Paul Reyes, and Brandon Loredo also made first team all league. The trials are next week, good

ObservingFeminism Written By: Abigail Knorr

Feminism nowadays has been tossed around lately and a lot of people don't really understand what it exactly means. Being a feminist means that you believe that women and men should have equal rights and opportunities. Of course there are some of those women and men who are anti-feminist that think that women should stay at home, cook and clean and take care of the kids while the husband is off at work making money to provide for his family. But why can't women do that too? A lot of women nowadays use the term feminism as a weapon to try and up one of men. But that's not what it's meant to do it's a way to be equal to men and not have women try to rule the world with it.

Also without feminism women wouldn't be able to be teachers, nurses/doctors, lawyers, or even be able to work in general. I hope to see many women be in high-powered positions to show that women can be as important as men are. I also hope to see that women and men will be paid the same. Women that work full-time make only .79 cents for every dollar earned by men. There are many famous women that are speaking up about how much they make compared to their male co-workers. It has been a big issue for many women that are single mothers or are just living on their own. Women just can't live off of 21% less than an average man makes. There are many things that have changed for the better and there are still some things that could still change to make all women and men equal, like it should have been from the start.

FIDM stands for Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising. There are 3 school located in California: Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Francisco. This two-year college is a for-profit school, and is a college of art and business. FIDM is extremely popular because of the area the schools are located and the opportunities that the school offers.

Applying to FIDM is not too easy. They are a very selective school and only accept 49% of freshmen´s that have applied. Academic GPA, Talent/Ability, and an Interview are required in the application process. Out of 1,500 students that have applied, each school generally admits 700 students, and only about 500 enroll to the school.

Although FIDM is a great school, it is

very expensive. To live on-campus it costs around 40,000 dollars a year, off-campus is about 60,000, and living at home is around 50,000. Of course, all these prices do vary this just a rough estimate. Scholarships are offered to help pay for tuition and financial aid.

The opportunities this school offers are endless. Hollywood costume collection, Costume study and museum, and fragrance bottle collection are all unique facilities FIDM offers. I recommend researching every campus FIDM has in California if you have a passion for fashion and the business industry. This industry is very promising today and has a lot of opportunities.

As the month of May approaches do you ever wonder about the history of May? For instance, where does the name ‘May’ come from? The name May is originated from Latin Maius from the Greek goddess Maia, meaning the goddess of spring. May 1st is actually considered ‘May Day’, it is usually considered a holiday since ancient times. On May 5th, famously known as ‘Cinco de Mayo’, Mexico celebrates the Mexican army’s victory over France at the battle of Puebla in 1862. The traditional celebrations usually have mariachis and/or parades. Fun fact, on May 1st, 1931 the Empire State Building was officially open. Also another fun fact, May was once considered a bad month to get married in, a poem says, “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day.” May used to be the third month on early Roman calendars. In America May is Skin Cancer Awareness and Mental Health Awareness month. Emerald is the birthstone of May, which represents success or love. Also celebrated is the one-day that is dedicated to our lovely mother’s, Mother’s Day that falls on Sunday May 8th. My favorite day of May would be Mother’s Day because you get to see the entire mother’s enjoy their day with their children. Memorial day happens to land on Monday May 30th this year, Memorial day was originally called Decoration Day. It was called Decoration Day because to honor the deceased people would decorate their graves with flowers and flags. Legally, Americans are required to take a moment of remembrance at about 3p.m. What are your favorite events/holidays/history of May?

Ingredients: • 2 1/2 cup uncooked quinoa • 4 1/2 cup low-sodium vegetable

stock, or water • 2 tbsp pesto sauce • 1/2 tsp Celtic salt • 2 tsp arrowroot powder, or

cornstarch • 2 cups fresh organic spinach • 12 oz skim mozzarella cheese,

I used 16oz • 1/3 cup parmesan cheese • 12 oz fresh broccoli florets • 3 green onions, chopped

Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 400F. 2. In a 9x13 baking rectangular

dish place the quinoa and green onions. On the meantime, place the broccoli in a large bowl and microwave on

high for 4-5 minutes. Set aside. My microwave is not very powerful so this is how long I did it for without the broccoli getting mushy. If you have a powerful microwave you may need just 3 minutes, as it will continue to bake in the oven for about 5 minutes.

3. In a large mixing bowl, with a wire whisk, mix the vegetable stock, pesto, arrowroot powder and salt. Heat mixture until boil. You can do this on your stovetop or microwave. I used my microwave.

4. Add the vegetable stock to the quinoa followed by the spinach, Parmesan and 3/4 of the mozzarella cheese. Bake for 30-35 minutes. Take the quinoa casserole out of the oven and mix in the broccoli. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese over the quinoa and broccoli and place back in the oven for

Softball Girls Closer to Wac By: Miguel Mejia

As the softball team is coached as

Dustin Caropreso, they walk off the field getting

closer with the big WAC win. This team is talked

about as a very strong team, knowing how to

play with each other. This game was a big game

for them, against El Capitan Gauchos. They

played against the league's best pitcher who

achieved 33 strikeouts in 2 games. This was not

an easy win for these girls but they fought for

what they knew they could get.

Los Banos took the lead in the first of

3-0 and thanks to the Sophomore Savannah

Valenzuela. El Capitan came back with a 5 run

third. Taking the lead to 5-3 and getting an

advantage over the Tigers. It was a back and

forth fight throughout the game with the Tiger

girls fighting for the big WAC win they needed.

Coach Caropreso feels that they played their

hearts out on that field and the stats show.

Although this game didn’t put them in first for

league standings they bumped their way into

getting there.

Coach Caropreso mentioned, “We by

no means played our best softball.” Although

there is always some mistakes to point out

through a good game this win was good to keep

these girls still in the race to take the WAC

championship. With this hardworking group of

girls it looks like the fight should come along

really well. With maybe a doubt from the other

team thinking their star pitcher would strike

these girls out and leave with an easy win, they

were proved wrong and Caropreso and his team are able to get to the next

practice knowing there is something to look forward to.

Dress Code: Sports Wear By: Daniel Rucobo

So your team had just won the big championship game and you’re ecstatic about their victory, so ecstatic that you’ve decided to wear your favorite player’s team jersey to school! So as you roam around campus, feeling quite high and mighty supporting your team, you’re suddenly approached by a campus worker and informed that your outfit is out of school regulation and you must remove it at once. Nobody’s been harmed, in fact you’ve heard nothing but compliments about your jersey, so what seems to be the issue? You are taken to the office, told to remove the jersey at once, and are given a substitute shirt for the day. Now you roam campus in a dingy old “hand-me-down” and are told that you can pick up your jersey at the end of the day. But why? What seems to be the big issue that is restricting you from supporting your team? Many of the students that attend Los Banos High are huge sports fans and many of them own some form of sports related gear. However, we are restricted and told that we are not allowed to wear such attire. This may anger many students who are simply supporting their team or trying to show off their latest gift but are then forced to give up their sports wear and if they are to refuse than consequences are sure to follow. It’s not that the school is wanting to restrict us and hold us back from wearing the clothes that we enjoy but they are simply trying to protect us and make the school a safe environment for its students and employees. Times aren’t quite how they used to be and sports attire is generally used to support a team rather than being used in a negative manner. Perhaps the school dress code will someday change, but not until we as students can learn to accept this as a privilege and not expect it as a simple right.

and pepper. Brush both sides of eggplant slices with oil mixture and place in single layers on 3 baking sheets. Bake, in batches if necessary, until lightly browned and cooked through, 20 to 25 minutes per batch.

3. In a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook onion and 4 garlic cloves with remaining oil until golden, about 8 minutes. Add marinara sauce, reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 20 minutes.

4. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, mix together ricotta, Parmigiano-Reggiano, remaining garlic, and parsley. Season with salt and pepper. Spread about 1 1/4 cups marinara sauce in the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch baking dish before assembling 3 layers. For first layer: Place one-third of eggplant slices over sauce. Dollop one-third of ricotta mixture over eggplant, then sprinkle on one-third of mozzarella. Drizzle with 1-1/4 cups sauce and add half the peppers. Repeat the same process, layering on eggplant, ricotta, mozzarella, sauce, and peppers. For third layer: Add remaining eggplant, ricotta, marinara sauce, and mozzarella. Bake lasagna until sauce is bubbling and mozzarella is melted and beginning to brown, 40 to 45 minutes.
