I hope you enjoyed a long Labor

Day weekend. We have hit the

    ground running this week. MAP

    (Measures of Academic Progress)

testing has begun for students in

grades 1-5. MAP testing is given in

    the Fall, Winter and Spring.

    Teachers can give information re-

    garding testing dates.

Last week, you should have re-

    ceived the student/parent calen-

    dar/handbook. Please review this

    information carefully. The calendar

is subject to change. Changes will

be posted on the monthly calendar

sent home the first Thursday of

each month or in the Paw Print,

    published on the website weekly.

The handbook has a great deal of in-

    formation about school procedures

    and other important events.

Also, last week, information on Parent

Portal was sent home for new stu-

dents. All returning students will ac-

cess Parent Portal using the same

password as last year. If you have

    problems accessing Parent Portal,

    please email Donna Corley at

[email protected]. She will be glad

    to forward instructions.

    Remember that Friday is Fabulous

First Friday! Wear your Lake Murray

    t-shirt or school colors.

    Dear Parents,

We need your help. Throughout each school day we

are having many forgotten items dropped off in the

reception area. While everyone forgets a lunchbox or

notebook occasionally, we are having to interruptclass instruction to have students come pick up these

    items.

Please help your child each evening to pack up their

book bags and prepare for the next day. This is a

great way to learn responsibility. And, you dont

have to make an extra trip to school and class instruc-

    tion isnt interrupted.

Thank you for your help with this matter.

    Oops! Forgotten Items..

Learning at LMES doesnt end at 2:30!There are many after school opportunities for stu-

dents at Lake Murray Elementary School. Enrollment

for the following programs can be completed through

the Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands website:

    Art Smart (Grades K-5)

Girls on the Run (Grades 3-5) Mad Science (Grades K-5)

    Group Piano Lessons (Grades 1-5)

Charging To Student Lunch Account:On occasion, students will ask to purchaseextra items at lunch, an extra entree, side

    item (vegetable/fruit/fries) and/or snack. In

the past we have asked for a signed letter,

only if you wanted your child to be able to

charge extras. This year, we are going to try

something new and ask, that if you DO NOT want your child

to charge extra items to their account, to please send the cafe-

teria a signed letter stating so. That way we can keep your

preference on file. If we do not receive a letter stating that

you do not approve of your child charging extras to his/her

account, we will begin to allow your child to charge extras. Itis very important that your childs account remains in good

standing for him/her to charge. Any accounts that are not in

good standing will be stopped from charging extras items.

On the day your child is wants to order an extra entree,

please have your child tell his/her teacher when lunch counts

are taken in the morning. This way we can be sure of prepar-

ing enough food for all of our students. Of course if you

rather, you may send cash with your child to carry to lunch on

the day he/she wants to purchase any extras, instead of charg-

ing to his/her account. We will not be able to control how

much extras your child will charge, this is something that youand your child should discuss and decide.

If you are interested in being able to view your childs lunch

balance, receive low balance reminders and view daily spend-

ing and cafeteria purchases, you may wish to enroll in Pay-PAMS (Parent Account Management System). We have infor-mation on how to enroll in the office. Let your childs teacher

know that you would like a flyer and one will be sent home.

Our LMES Chess Club for students in grades 3-5

will be starting up very soon. Chess is a great

activity for kids, and parents love what it

teaches them while they play. This game is a dynamic

tool for teaching math skills, concentration, good

sportsmanship, consequences, how to make friends

and much more. This club will meet on Monday af-

ternoons from 2:40-3:40 in Mrs. Jones Portable 10.

Preference for slots will be given to players who par-

ticipated in the club last year and those who register

first. If you would like to register your child, you can

complete the on-line registration form on Mrs. Jones

classroom website or return the paper copy to Mrs.

Jones (via your homeroom teacher) by Thursday,9/19. Our first meeting will be Monday, 9/23. Clubparticipants will be notified via email prior to our

first meeting. See page 5 for the registration form.
