I would like to be on the Student Leader-
ship committee because I am a very
committed person in all the things I do. I
would be able to bring many great ideas
to our school and our community like
planting trees and buying some bird-
feeders outback to attract more wildlife.
Another great idea I was thinking about
is having fundraisers. We could also
make blankets for the nursing home res-
idents and soup kitchen goers. Also dur-
ing guided studies we could make up
plays and perform for the nursing home
or whatever that teacher would like us to
do that day. Instead of just decorating
the school for a certain holiday we
should decorate for all the holidays or
seasons. I think we will be able to raise
enough money to help more people in
our community and surrounding commu-
nities. So again I will tell you that I thik I
will be a good Student Leadership mem-
ber because I am hardworking and will
usually be available anytime anyone
needs me. I hope you will like my ideas
that I thought of for this school year.
residents. I think we could also serve
food at the nursing home like we do at
the soup kitchen. Students can bring in
their old stuffed animals to give to the
children who are less fortunate or to
military families. Also we could make
signs and advertise for a car wash and
people could donate however much
money they would like. My in school
ideas include helping Elementary stu-
dents on their reading and math skills.
We could help Elementary teachers and
Jr. High teachers by grading homework

nervous. I think it would also be nice f
we started writing letters to Veterans,
like Henry Saavedra, to thank them for
their service to our country It would
be nice to do this for Veteran’s Day
and maybe send it to Veterans in a
hospital. It would also be nice to have
Hat Days or Pajama Days where peo-
ple pay $1 to war a hat or pajamas to
school and we can donate the money
to the Salvation Army, veterans, or an
animal shelter.
Thank you for considering me for Stu-
dent Leadership.
I think I would be an excellent student
leader because I like to help others in
need. I have also received straight A’s
for all of my classes so far in Jr. High. I
enjoy working concessions as well as
selling candy grams. I love helping
other in their time of need. I would be
thrilled to go to the Soup Kitchen of
Freeport because I love seeing all the
people at the Soup Kitchen smile when
we see them. I also visited the Soup
Kitchen this summer and donated
some of my allowance to them. I like to
make people happy.
I think I could make the school more
positive by helping people when their
books fall or when they drop a pen. I
like to be social with everyone so if
someone is having a bad day, I try to
help them by making them smile. It’s
little things like that that can make
people an everyday hero.
My ideas for the 2010 school year
would be to continue to work conces-
sion stands at home games. I think it is
a good idea to continue to tour for 6th
graders, but maybe we could do
something for new 6th graders the first
week of school so they are not so

teachers (be a teacher’s aide) during
guided studies. I was thinking we could
get with the high school Student Leader-
ship program so they could teach us any
tips they know or show us any new ways
to help our school and community. I
think all of our hard work will add up to
enough money to have rewards and do
more things than I just listed. Once again
I think I will be a great leader on Student
Leadership because I feel I am very
trustworthy, honest, and a reliable per-
son. I hope these ideas I have come up
with help the program for the 2010-2011
school year.
I would like to be on the Student Leader-
ship Committee because I feel I could
make the school and community a better
place. I have come up with a few ideas to
do so. Some of these ideas include fund-
raisers and bake sales. With the money
we earn from them we could donate it to
a deserving foundation. Also I think it
would great to help the environment by
picking up trash on the roads. We could
go to the nursing home and talk with the
residents every Saturday, play bingo
with them, or do crafts with them. We
could also make door hangers or signs
to decorate their rooms. If we found a
willing donator to give flowers we could
make bouquets for the residents. Anoth-
er idea I have is to work at the thrift store
putting things on shelves, pricing things,
or whatever employees need help with.
We could go around town and ask for
nonperishable food items to donate to
the soup kitchen. Also we could have
shirts made to wear for all of these
events we go to so people know what
our group name is and what we do. For
more in school things I was thinking we
could help kids get organized and also
come up with study tips for their tests.
Another idea I have is we could help
Student Leader, Marissa Rothschadl’s Winning Essay
they could get a free ala cart at lunch.
Another idea is for at the beginning
of the school year. All the Junior High
students could have a party at the
pool. I think it would start the school
year on a good note. Perhaps the PTO
would be willing to provide some of
the money needed to fund these pro-
jects.
These are my reasons why I should
be in student leadership. I hope you
take my points into consideration and
allow my name on the ballot. Thank
you for your time.
I should be in student leadership
because I am a good leader. At my
dance class, I am an assistant dance
teacher. I assist the younger stu-
dents in jazz, tap, lyrical ballet, and
clogging.
In school, I am comfortable being
the leader in discussion groups.
Other students say I am a good lead-
er and agree that I should be in stu-
dent leadership.
I also like to help people in need. I
have helped many of my classmates
with math, Language Arts, and liter-
ature. If a student has a problem
with another student, I try to help
him or her with the problems.
Whenever a student forgets some-
thing for class, I lend them what they
need.
My last reason for wanting to be a
part of the Lena Junior High School
Student Leadership committee is
that I would like to help the school
become a better learning environ-
ment. If a student accomplishes
something he or she has never done
before, I believe they should get
rewarded for it. They could get a
homework pass to use in class or

clothing and which grade gets
the most pounds or the most
clothing wins some kind of prize,
and the clothing will go to the
needy.
I have served in peer mediation for
the past two years. I attended the
mediation sessions, and in those ses-
sions we learned how to talk stu-
dents into settling differences in a
non-violent way and how to keep
things calm and with no fighting.
While I was serving, I did conces-
sions and place mats for the nursing
home, and wrapped some of the
doors at Christmas. If elected I will
try to do all of these again.
I think I would be a great candidate
for Student Leadership because I am
good at following directions. I am
able to think of some good ideas for
the school. I also think I am a great
candidate because my peers re-
spect me. If elected, I would assist in
the service projects such as helping
with candy grams, concessions at
sporting events, serve at the soup
kitchen, assist at the nursing home,
attending leadership courses, and
Christmas decorating and wrapping.
If I am elected for Student Leader-
ship, I will try to make the school
more positive by helping students
with their grades, encourage others
to keep the halls cleaner, and get-
ting more students to come to sport-
ing events to cheer on all athletes.
The ideas I have for the 2010-
2011 Student Leadership are:
At Christmas, run a fundraiser
for individuals or a family in
need. This could be done by
putting gift ideas on a card and
students would pick a card and
bring the gift on the card.
Bring back the Field day for the
junior high and then the cook
out for lunch.
Have a clothing drive. Students
of 6th-8th bring in their old
Page 5 Volume 9, Issue 5
Student Leader, Kaley Long’s Winning Essay I would like to be on Student Leader-
ship this year because I enjoy helping
others. Also I enjoy being a leader by
setting good examples for my peers.
This is a huge responsibility which I
attend on taking advantage of if I am
chosen to be on Student Leadership. I
really love helping those in our com-
munity as well. This is a really great
committee for The Lena-Winslow Jun-
ior High and Ihope to be a part of it.
I would make the school a more posi-
tive environment by putting others
before myself and keeping a positive
attitude. I could contribute those char-
acteristics to the whole committee and
make sure we all set a good example
for our peers.
For the upcoming 2010-2011 school
Year I think we should run some fund-
raisers to raise money for the school.
We could make the fundraisers fun for
the students too. We could do an end
of the year fundraiser like we did at
the end of the school year two years
ago. Also we could sell candy grams
again. That could be really fun for the
members of the committee and other
students. We could serve food at the
Soup Kitchen. I know that in the past
they love when we come and help the
members serve food to those less for-
tunate. And finally, I really hope I can
be a part of the Student Leadership
Committee of 2010-2011 school year.
It’s so cold…
You bake a cake, and set
it out to cool, 10 minutes
later it’s frosted!
Your shadow freezes to
the sidewalk.
The snowman begs you to
take him inside at night.
Police tell a robber to
freeze, and he does.
What did the big furry
hat say to the warm
woolly scarf? “You hang
around while I go on
ahead.”
If you live in an igloo,
what’s the worst thing
about global warming?
No privacy!
What do snowmen call
their offspring?
Chill-dren.

What’s happening in the
month of January …. We are helping with “Hearts
for Huneke,” a fundraiser to
help raise money for Kelli Hun-
eke’s fight with cancer. Stu-
dents can buy a heart for $1
and their name will be placed
on a paper heart, then the
hearts will be used to decorate
for the spaghetti supper on
February 4th.
The money raised at the Valen-
tine’s dance on February 11th
will go to Kelli Huneke as well.
