The Passive

Definition Every verb turn into from active to passive according to its tense.

The steps

1.Put the Object at the first of the sentence.

I saw you.

You were seen.

Cases of the Object1.We can find the O. after the main

verb in the active sentence, and the verb which end with “ed-ing-s”.Ex1: We always show these costs. Ex2:The government raised all interest rates.Ex3:He is playing football.Ex4:He plays football.

2 .The O maybe more than one word, and ends at the “Time and place complements and prepositions .”

Ex1: It will probably achieve its 4000th branch within ten years.

Ex2: The bank was slowly opening its first few branches across Europe.

Ex3: The council constructed a new dump for public.

3.Sometimes there is no O in the sentence.

Ex: We said it was said.

2.Change the main verb according to the tense.

According to:

*Past simple.*Past continuous.*Past perfect.

:Past simpleThe formula in active:V+2nd

The formula in passive:Was/were+P.P

Ex1: The government raised all interest rates yesterday.A: All interest rates were raised yesterday.

Ex2: In the early days, it offered banking service only to companies.

A:In the early days, banking service was offered only to companies.

Past Continues The formula in active:Was/were +V+ing

The formula in passive:Was/were +being+V+ed

Ex: Fossil fuels were causing global warming. A: Global warming were being caused.

Past perfectThe formula in active:Had + P.P

The formula in passive:Had+been+P.P

Ex: Scientists had measured temperatures.A: Temperatures had been measured.

Change to passive .11 .Aswan High Dam created Lake Nasser.
