Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | August 9, 2020 | Page 2
Finally, six of our second grade class at St. Mary, Mother of God Parish in Yatesboro made their first communion last Sunday. We congratulate Benjamin DeMatteo, Lyla Firment, Jonathan Lightner, Dylan Myers, Cecilia Nagy and Giovanna Palilla. They were all happy after they received Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time. They were joined by their families, friends and relatives that made the church beautiful because it was packed based on our 25% percent seating capacity.
First Communion this year was a little different from the previous years. It is usually done within Easter time or the first week of May but because of the COVID-19 and the recent changes of assignment for some priests, there were challenges and transition met not only by the First Communion class but also by the faith formation team that includes the coordinator of faith formation, catechists and the parents. But thanks to their dedication and hard work because they did not stop teaching and guiding our First Communion class. Kudos to all of them!
I encouraged the parents to continue to be an inspiration for their children especially in the practice of faith because what they say and do will influence their faith and friendship with Jesus and Mary. No matter what the catechist or parish does, unless the children sense their parents’ faith they will not absorb faith. If the parents for example will not come to the church on Sunday or any holy day, they will not come also. But if they go regularly, they will learn to value the faith and the importance of coming to the church. They will grow in faith and practice it not only by convenience which most of the nominal Catholics do. They come only whenever they feel going to the church or whenever they are being prepared for the reception of the sacraments.
Faith that is not grounded into a personal relationship with the Lord can easily be weakened and diminished by worldly influence and personal weaknesses. Just like what happened to Peter and the other disciples in the Gospel this Sunday (Mt 14:22-33). They were so scared when their boat was tossed by the waves and winds. These waves and winds can be the challenges in the world. But Jesus told them take courage, do not to be afraid. They began to be excited that Peter wanted to get nearer to Him to which Jesus agreed but as Peter saw the strong wind and began to sink, he shouted, Lord save me! This illustrate how our faith can be overcome by fear when it is not that strong.
I know as I continue with my priestly ministry in both parishes, I will encounter challenges and difficulties but I have faith that with your support, we can overcome them and we can journey together with lots of hope. I just met with the Finance Council for both parishes. Next week, I will meet with the Pastoral Council to know them and seek their counsel for our pastoral directions we want to take as we continue to deal with this COVID-19 pandemic.

Humans doubt. It’s what we do. We doubt
ourselves and we doubt others. Before any
of us say anything about Peter’s doubting
the words of Jesus that told him he could get
out of his boat and walk on water, we need
to get real with ourselves: How would I
respond in the same situation? Much of our
doubt comes about because of a lack of
trust in God. We place our trust in material
things, wealth, or imperfect people instead
of the One who is worthy of our trust 100
percent of the time. Our stewardship is often
hampered by our doubt that God will provide
all that we need. If I give more, I may not
have enough to survive! When we place all
our trust in God, not only do we find that we
have been given all we need – our doubt
that cause us to sink in the pool of life fades
away. We don’t suddenly become perfect
in our trust, and there will be times when we
find ourselves with concerns again. However,
it is in those moments we find that He is still
there, speaking the words we need to hear:
“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.”
Please remember in your prayers the soul of Yatesboro parishioner Robert Edwards, who passed away recently. May God grant him eternal rest and peace.

2020 DIOCESAN LENTEN APPEAL
Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Join Us on Saturday, August 15
For Mass at 10:00 a.m.
St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Kittanning
Since this solemnity falls on a Saturday this year, it is not observed as a Holyday of Obligation.
However, since it is such a special Marian feast day and patronal feast day of our diocese,
you are invited to join us for a Mass as we celebrate the Assumption of Mary.
Please note that in observance of this Diocesan holiday,
our parish offices will be closed on Friday, August 14.
On this solemnity, we profess our belief that Mary has gone before us, body and soul, into heaven. For her, the resurrection of the dead has taken place already. And thus the Assumption is technically an “Easter feast.” God invites us to eternal life, to en joy the glorious new creation of His Son in body, soul, and spirit. Our final hope is the resurrection of our own bodies at the end of time to exist forever in this new order of creation. The Solemnity of the Assumption is our great celebration of this final hope. Mary is a pioneer for us in faith. She was the first among us to accept Jesus Christ into her life. In her bodily Assumption, she is also the first fully to enjoy eternal life at the side of her risen Son in the glory of heaven. Where she has gone, we hope to follow. We rejoice in the fulfillment of God’s promise in her, as we turn to her to guide us to the side of her risen Son who reigns in heaven.
It’s all about gratitude. It’s all about giving back. It’s all about God.
At this point, all dollars pledged will be returned to our parishes! Please fill out the pledge card you have received in the mail and return it at Mass or via mail or make your pledge online at www.DioceseofGreensburg.org/GROW.
Every gift is very much appreciated!
100% of new gifts now remain in our parishes!

AN UPDATE FROM DIVINE REDEEMER SCHOOL
As we continue preparations to meet Health and Safety Guidelines to re-open school on September 1st, we wanted to update parishioners of the positive news happening at Divine Redeemer School.
For a second straight year, DRS is seeing an increase in enrollment – so much so that some classrooms have a waiting list.
Also, the financial backing from the community, which goes to support student tuition and school needs, has increased substantially through both the Armstrong County’s Day of Giving and the PA Educational Income Tax Credit (E.I.T.C.) Program.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our staff, students, and families here at Divine Redeemer – it is making a difference!
