From the Pastor’s Desk

Entering into the third week of my pastorate for both parishes. Apart from the daily celebration of the mass for both parishes, my past week was spent meeting with the Dean, Fr. Alan Polczynski, the parish staffs of St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Kittanning and St. Mary, Mother of God Parish in Yatesboro to get to know them and put things in order. I had the chance also to meet one of the members of the Finance Council of St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish

and we had great conversation. He shared with me some of the things that took place in the parish and what needs to be done as we move forward.

I will continue to hold a meeting for other groups and ministries in the coming days and weeks especially with the Pastoral and Finance Council. I am doing these so that I can get a whole picture of the parish life and what needs to be done pastorally, administratively and financially as we move forward.

I believe that when we have a clear pastoral vision and mission, we can serve the people effectively. When we have the right people in the parish administration, we can serve the parish efficiently. And if we have these two combined, we can achieve stability and build the parish strong financially.

One challenge that we have right now is how we can reach out to people who have stopped coming to Church because either they are scared to be with the crowd or they do not want to wear mask due to medical condition or other personal reasons as we continue to deal with the COVID-19. With the CDC guidelines and the Diocesan guidelines, it makes it more challenging. Therefore, we need to be more creative in order to be connected.

Financially for the fiscal year 2019-2020, St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Kittanning was in deficit. The income/revenues were not enough to cover for the operational expenses of the parish. St. Mary, Mother of God Parish, Yatesboro just made it break even. I will provide you a report once I have met with the Pastoral and Finance Council.

As I continue with my pastorate, I will be transparent with you. I hope that you will support me. The success of the parish does not only depend on the pastor but also on the support of all members who love and care for the parish.

Like Solomon in our first reading, this 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, I asked God to give me wisdom and an understanding heart to judge right from wrong so I can lead the parishes entrusted to me in the right direction.

Our Heartfelt Congratulations to Bishop Edward C. Malesic on his appointment by Pope Francis on July 16, 2020

as the 12th Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland.

Bishop Malesic was appointed the 5th Bishop of the Diocese of Greensburg by Pope Francis on April 24, 2015. He was ordained and installed as

Bishop of Greensburg just over five years ago, on July 13, 2015, at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral, Greensburg.

Keep Bishop Malesic in your prayers as he takes on this new challenge. He assures you of his trust in the Lord and his prayers for the

Diocese of Greensburg and its clergy, religious and laity.

He will be installed as Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland on Monday, September 14. Watch for additional information.

When a merchant finally finds a priceless,

perfect pearl, he sells all he has and buys it.

He does this because that pearl matters to

him. It has significance and brings a depth of

joy like none other. What matters and is of

importance to you? When what matters to us

has something to do with the kingdom of God,

God is delighted. His exuberant happiness is

hard to contain because He knows that

we are happy stumbling upon this beautiful

wisdom. Ask God to help you discover this

pearl of great price. There are many things

competing for our attention every day. But not

all of these things are important. We focus

too much energy on the unimportant,

superficial stuff and neglect paying attention

to the things that really make a difference

and have the greatest impact. Things all too

easily become more significant than people,

and our agendas become more essential than

God’s. We do not have to empty our bank

accounts and totally detach from everything

we have in order to serve God. But, we are

asked to prioritize our lives and make what

matters to God what matters most to us. In

doing so, when we rise each day, we will be

able to see what really needs our attention

and embrace it with great joy!

A groundbreaking scholarship opportunity has been established for students who wish to attend a Catholic school in the Diocese of Greensburg called the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership. The TOP student initiative was founded by anonymous donors from the local business community who received Catholic educations and were profoundly influenced by Saint Pope John Paul II. The donors believe that their Catholic faith, education and moral foundation gave them a great advantage in life. The Diocese of Greensburg is thrilled to announce they have committed $2.4 million in tuition assistance this year. That is the single largest donation by a family that the Diocese of Greensburg has ever received in one year. Their committment combined with $1.7 million in existing funds donated by more than 100 other individuals and businesses partici-pating in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program now make $4.1 million in scholarships and tuition assistance available for the 12 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Greensburg. “This is a major opportunity for our Catholic schools that is being made possible by visionary, community-minded individuals who understand how the impact of a private, Catholic education could benefit thousands of students,” Greensburg Bishop Edward C. Malesic said. “We are grateful for their commitment to our schools and families through this partnership.” The Diocese of Greensburg is hopeful that the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership will become a model for making Catholic education accessible to families who value strong Catholic teaching and formation as a neces-sary part of their child’s development. America magazine wrote that Saint Pope John Paul II left a legacy of being one of the most important world leaders in the second half of the 20th century. He was a man of convic-tion and principle who built bridges of peace between people of different countries and religions. He was a preacher and a teacher who drew historic crowds of men, women and chil-dren all yearning to be closer to God. He was front and center on the global stage as a defender of human dignity writing that, “Every threat to human dignity and life must necessarily be felt in the Church’s very heart.” He believed that Catholic schools should be supported because they are critical to the formation and inspiration of young people. “Our Catholic schools have many advantages that others are not able to provide. Our schools create a caring environ-

ment where children can talk openly about faith in a high-tech academic atmosphere. Our personalized attention gives them other advantages as well. The student to teacher ratio is 13-to-1. And the high school graduation rate is 100%,” Dr. Maureen Marsteller, superintendent of Catholic schools, said. Families interested in participating in the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership will be matched with an outreach and admissions coordinator who will accompany them through the application process. The parent or guardian of an interested student should call 724-552-2565 or visit www.catholicschoolsguide.org to arrange an in-person interview with the designated

outreach and admissions coordinator to begin the process of applying for the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership. The family must then demon-strate a financial need and express a willingness to provide some financial contribution to the cost of the educa-tion and agree to support the child’s spiritual and academic progress. This will include the completion of the

FACTS Grant and Aid application so that alternative sources of funding, such as EITC assistance, may be used for tuition assistance as well. However, the parent/guardian does not have to qualify for low income assistance to be eligible for participation in the partnership. The student must demonstrate evidence of academic com-mitment and an enthusiasm for learning as well as a willing-ness to participate in at least one activity at the student’s local parish or faith community. The family, along with the student, must demonstrate their commitment to the school as well as to their parish or denominational church through the donation of time, talent or treasure as able. They should earn recognition as valued servant leaders. The family must be registered members, or be willing to become members, of a parish or other local faith community. Bishop Malesic said, “All the clergy of the Diocese of Greensburg are committed to caring for the spiritual needs of every student in the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership so that each can deepen their faith, develop a personal relationship with Christ, enhance their self-esteem, and enjoy hope, joy and love of life.” To become a partner of TOP students and help provide additional scholarship funds, contact Michael Lucotch, Director of Development, at 724-552-2503 or [email protected].
