The same would be true for me when I was in college and seminary. New people, old friends, new teachers, sometimes a new school to attend, dances, sports – new possibilities and a new part of my life was getting ready to begin. I was ready at the end of the summer and could hardly wait for the new school year to begin. As a pastor now for many years I feel some of that same excitement every fall as we come to “Reformation 500 Rally Day/Back To Church Sunday.” People I have not seen over the summer start coming back to attend church, some new people visit the church and express interest in joining, children’s Sunday School begins a new year; it’s a new year for confirmation classes and youth ministry. …I could go on and on. I have hopes and dreams of what the congregation will become, of seeing God at work in people’s lives; of our members experiencing joy, hope, in their lives; people looking forward to serving the Lord, some people changing for the better because they invite the Holy Spirit to be at work in their lives as God chooses. …I could go on and on. Not all of my hopes pan out of course, but I know some of them will because God is among us. It happens every year when the church and its members are open to the work of God in their own lives and in their church family. We have planned and worked hard over the summer to be ready for this fall season of ministry at St. Mark’s and as part of the North American Lutheran Church. We are striving to be a RENEWED LUTHERAN CONGREGATION MOVING FORWARD IN FAITH. So many churches of all denominations are dying and declining around us. Our congregation faces its own challenges as well. The culture, its values and priorities, have changed dramatically in our country over the past ten years. The social media/technology revolution alone has changed the world dramatically since 2008. Our Leadership Team at St. Mark’s is looking at how we need to change our church culture (the way we practice ministry in the congregation and in the community) while continuing to hold strongly to our core values as Lutherans so St. Mark’s will fulfill God’s purposes for His Church this year and in the years ahead. It is not easy to change as we all know; we are most comfortable doing things the way they “have always been done,” even when the results are no longer satisfactory or God pleasing.

“A Renewed Lutheran Congregation …Moving Forward In Faith”

When I was in elementary school and then junior high and high school, starting the new school year was a time of excitement.

I have shared with the Church Council that our ministry focus for the year beginning “Reformation 500 Rally Sunday,” September 10th will build off our NALC Convocation theme: “Holding Fast – Being (Re) Formed.” At SMELC we strive to exist for God’s mission, not primarily for ourselves. Our vision statement says it like this: “We exist to connect people to Jesus and the church through Joyful Love, Service and Witness.”

So… we are seeking to change our church culture one step at a time while dealing with budget realities (both at the same time) for the sake of the Gospel to reach an ever changing culture and community with the message of Jesus.

In the North American Lutheran Church we are seeking to grow all members of the church to be disciples of Jesus, not only church members. Some of you heard me say at our church picnic last week that “disciples not only love the Lord, “THEY ARE ALSO IN LOVE WITH THE LORD.” Their joy in Jesus is contagious and they are a light to those around them.

What is our Vision for the Future? St. Mark’s Leadership Team met the end of August with Pastor David Luecke, Pastor of Missions, and Mark Rein, contemporary service worship pastor from Royal Redeemer Lutheran Church outside of Cleveland to learn from them and to explore the future possibility of offering both traditional and contemporary worship at St. Mark’s every week. Such a church culture change helped Royal Redeemer Lutheran grow from being a non-growth older Lutheran congregation to become a Lutheran congregation with significant growth among younger people, many of whom had dropped out of church over the past fifteen years.

Among other ideas being discussed is the possibility of meeting an identified need for a five day a week Christian Pre-School to serve the community. The school would put our building to good use and would also be a point of growth for the future of the congregation as well as meeting a community need of younger families/parents.

This summer we have also talked about the need to better utilize technology in the church’s ministry - projecting announcements before church; and during the worship service– hymns and the liturgy - on screens in the sanctuary. We want to move more into increased use of modern technology to reach more people with the Gospel and provide cost efficiencies.

The Church Council approved sending representatives of the congregation who have a passion for ministry with seniors to the first ever NALC Senior Adult Ministry Conference in Culpeper, Virginia, October 17-18. Topics include renewing the congregation through older adults, developing a discipleship-centered senior adult ministry, compelling mature adults to follow the call of Christ to service and incorporating an inter-generational ministry into the life of the church. Carol Scott, Bob and Vera Niggel will be attending on our behalf.

How we need to staff the church to prepare for the future and minister with joy and passion to the changing culture around us means a willingness to be open to new ideas and possibilities. It also will require a willingness to try some new ways of ministry and a willingness to make some sacrifices in order to be the church Christ calls us to be.

…Thanks for your encouragement and prayers as your leaders are hard at work.

In Christ, Pastor Al Towberman

Backpack Blessing, Confirmation receive Luther’ Pocket Catechism at the 10:15 am service.

Holy Families A Reformation 500 Opportunity

As part of our Reformation 500 Year emphasis we want to encourage you and your family to get involved in holding daily family devotional time together. Would you be willing to give it try and let us know your thoughts about “Holy Family Devotions?”

Martin Luther placed great emphasis on families being the center of prayer and devotional life. Luther’s Small Catechism was written so it could be used by parents to teach the faith to their children.

Since so many of our families today have gotten away from having family devotions or reading the Bible – as part being a “Renewing Lutheran Congregation” this fall we are encouraging our households to download the “NALC Family Time” daily devotions published by Solo Publishing on their smart phone, tablets and computers. The daily devotions are an initiative, produced by Sola Publishing 11.5

There is no registration, membership, or access code required! Simply visit the website below:

www.holyfamilytime.com

There is a devotional front and center of the main home page. Bookmark it on your computer so that it is always

handy for you.

For your convenience, there is also an app for your mobile devices. Search for “Sola App” in Google Play

or the iTunes App Store.

“May your good Spirit lead me on level ground.” Psalms 143:10

Warm September greetings, St. Marks’ Families,

The world is filled with lots of loud voices. People with exciting ideas will reward you with beauty, perfect bodies, wealth, fame, on and on the list goes with everything literally at your fingertips enticing our families to chase after in search of perfect happiness. I see youth and adults searching for direction and purpose, but finding disappointment and emptiness.

The season of transition is upon us once again. Here at my house I am finding my way through the experience of sending our first child off to college, so there has been a lot of reflecting on the past happening this summer. As I look back, I am filled with immense gratitude for the many, many blessings God has placed in the lives of our family. One significant blessing has been our church family.

I see the difference growing up in a church family has had on the lives of my sons. While they still have much growing to do, I know that their feet have been planted in God’s word and nurtured by Bible-inspired loving teachers and peers. These influences have helped my sons, and their father and I, to better understand from where true happiness comes. “My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding…” Proverbs 3:1-7

Sunday, September 10 begins a new Sunday school season at St Mark’s. Make this the year that your family gets planted in soil “on level ground.” Give yourselves and your children a place to learn and grow in God’s word, supported by a church family. The world is in desperate need of quiet, loving, people of God living His direction and purpose.
