Dear Friends,

Peace and the lack of it …

It's a search that drives men and nations to great extremes -- the

search for peace.

So much of our time, energy and resources are consumed with

trying to find and keep peace with family members, friends and

neighbours. To establish peace in places of unrest and tumult.

But often, no matter how hard we try, peace eludes us.

Each night my confidence in a world governed by peace is

undermined by the 10.00 pm news broadcast which announces

the most recent litany of international conflict and cruelty. Each

night the abuse and misuse of power saddens and dismays me. It

would seem that we are incapable of living in peace, of setting

aside our angers, outrages and prejudices and living more

sacrificially.

Were I to keep my eyes on the news broadcasts alone I would

have little cause for hope or confidence in any improvement in the

fortunes of those less fortunate than I find myself. It tests my

belief that good can overcome evil; light overcome darkness and

that integrity and truth can triumph.

Like many, If I focus on the scale and size of the problems I see it

leads me to a counsel of despair. It is then that my faith reminds

me that there is a different way to see and act and be. That even

small beginnings of seeming inconsequential acts can have far

reaching and inspiring results.

Martin Luther King, the American pastor and a leader of the civil

rights movement wrote:

The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate.... Returning violence for violence multiples violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It is this love we see in Christ on the cross, it is this love that calls

us to try to be a channel of a different way; of God’s peace and in

our own small ways to be instruments in the work of love and

hope:

‘To bring love where there is hatred and pardon where injury, faith

where there is doubt, hope in despair, light in darkness and joy in

places of sorrow ….Never seeking so much to be consoled as to

console, and to be understood as to understand’

Our world is frequently out of step with God’s will and it is for that

which we pray. We pray too through our own lack of peace – and

In the midst of sometimes overwhelming odds we are by a mighty

effort of will to fix our gaze on our Divine Helper and there find it

possible to find peace.

This is as much true in big things as it is in the small things. This

parish is about to enter a time of vacancy. It is an uncomfortable

time. Waiting for a new appointment and preparing for the

uncertainty that change brings is never easy but scripture

encourages us with these words:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer

and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And

the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard

your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”.

Philippians 4:6-7

Robert and I wish you all well and thank you for the warmth,

friendship, support and encouragement that we have received

from you during our time amongst you.

A THANK YOU TO KERRY

Family Service won't be quite the same without Kerry's Magic Box and her effervescent enthusiasm which engaged children and adults of every age. Those of us who also heard her preach will remember how honestly and passionately she spoke, very often guiding us through difficult topics which we all have cause to question from time to time. Kerry packed a huge amount into her time with us. She began every week at 8am at St Martin's, E Horsley sharing a time of prayer with our Rector Elizabeth Bussmann and was frequently working well into the evening. We were blessed to have Robert's support in many ways too, from leading the intercessions, reading the lesson and occasionally preaching. He made friends with and supported a number of our congregation and will also be greatly missed. Personally I will miss Kerry enormously and owe her a big Thank You. She gave me a great deal of encouragement and confidence and we had a lot of fun together. God bless you both in all your new home and future plans.

We have an area with toys and books under the belfry, where parents can take very young children if a distraction is needed!

Downside & Hatchford’s Sports and Family Day

Monday 25th August 2014 on Downside Common

Downside & Hatchford’s Sports and Family day will once

again take place on August Bank Holiday Monday, on

Downside Common. With “FREE ENTRY” “FREE PARKING”

and loads of “FREE” Entertainment for all ages

This day started in the 19th Century, as a way of bringing the

village community together for some fun and games. This

family fun day continues to grow each year. So why not join

us this year for a day full of fun, fun, fun!

People of all ages now come from far and wide to join the

community atmosphere, we have over 40 “FREE TO ENTER”

races for all the family ranging from the light-hearted yet

fiercely competed wheelbarrow, three-legged, spider and

sack races, to the slightly more technical mile race.

Between races the crowd will be kept entertained with hay

bale tossing, welly throwing and tug of war competitions.

There will also be Crazy Golf, Archery, Circus Workshop,

Punch and Judy Shows, Birds of Prey Shows, “Juggling Jake”

Magic & Circus Shows, Face Painting, Beat the Goalie, Tae

Kwon Do Display, Martial Arts Demonstrations, Auctions,

Tombola, Live Music and the very popular novelty dog show.

Stalls, rides and sideshows will fill the common, many raising

money for local charities and worthy causes. There will be

hot & cold food together with a bar all day.

The committee are extremely pleased that once again

“Grosvenor Billinghurst” in Cobham agreed to be principle

sponsor of the day. This sponsorship is complimented with

the continued generous support from Lawmens Ltd,

Downside Sports and Social Club. Together with the many

local businesses who support the day in a variety of ways.

Saints’ Stories

15th July St Swithun (or Swithin) - saint for a rainy day

St Swithun is apparently the saint you can blame for rainy

summers. It is said that if it rains on his special day, 15 July,

it will then rain for forty days after that. It all began when he

was made Bishop of Winchester in 852 by King Ethelwulf of

Wessex. It was an important posting: Winchester was the

capital of Wessex, and during the 10 years Swithun was

there, Wessex became the most important kingdom of

England.

During his life, instead of washing out people’s summer

holidays, and damping down their spirits, Swithun seems to

have done a lot of good. He was famous for his charitable

gifts and for his energy in getting churches built. When he

was dying in 862, he asked that he be buried in the cemetery

of the Old Minster, just outside the west door.

If he had been left there in peace, who knows how many

rainy summers the English may have been spared over the

last 1000 years. But, no, it was decided to move Swithun. By

now, the 960s, Winchester had become the first monastic

cathedral chapter in England, and the newly installed monks

wanted Swithun in the cathedral with them. So finally, on 15

July 971, his bones were dug up and Swithun was translated

into the cathedral.

That same day many people claimed to have had miraculous

cures. Certainly everyone got wet, for the heavens opened.

The unusually heavy rain that day, and on the days following,

was attributed to the power of St Swithun. Swithun was

moved again in 1093, into the new Winchester cathedral.

His shrine was a popular place of pilgrimage throughout the

middle ages. The shrine was destroyed during the

Reformation, and restored in 1962. There are 58 ancient

dedications to Swithun in England.

Thank you for coming to live as one of us.

Thank you for telling those wonderful stories of everyday

people and events, which you filled with messages of truth

and eternity.

Help us, Lord, to learn from your written Word and to

recognise you as the living Word - and our Saviour, the only

way to the Father.

In your name we pray, Lord Jesus,

Amen.

Ockham Cricket Club

After the early season’s dual disappointments of bad weather and worse performances, the fortunes of Ockham CC have taken a turn for the better. It seems the OCC cricketers need the sunshine more than expected. Both the league sides are unbeaten since May with the 1st XI recording 4 straight victories, the 2nd XI 3 straight victories and both sides sit 3rd and 2nd in their respective divisions. The ball seems to be dominating the bat at present and our bowlers are making the most of their opportunities. Stephen Rough, the club’s Deputy Chairman, is leading the way having taken 19 wickets already, including two 5 wicket hauls and an elusive hat trick against Salfords 1st XI. Ricky Hoyte matched that with a hat-trick of his own against Headley Old Freemans 2nd XI. Richard Slater is also enjoying his bowling and returned his best figures for the club against Woldingham 1st XI with an unplayable spell that saw him take 4 wickets for a measly 4 runs! Ockham Cricket Week sees Effingham CC and Avorians CC visit the Hautboy Meadow for the Twenty20 tournament. This year also sees Helps’ Alcoholics play their final ever match. 35 years ago Derek Helps formed the Helps’ Alcoholics and they have played Ockham every year since. However with so few of the original members still playing the team is winding up with a final fixture at the Hautboy Meadow. This year the match will be played in Noel Gordon’s memory. Noel played in the first Helps’ Alcoholics match and was an ever present member of the team. 5th July 1st XI vs Holmbury St Mary

News from St Matthews: It has been a very busy term here at St Matthews. We have had our Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools this month. As a Church school we are subject to two Inspections: Ofsted and SIAMS. We were delighted to do ‘the double’ and achieve Outstanding in our SIAMS Inspection. The Inspector wrote: The impact of collective worship on the school community is ‘Outstanding’; The school, through its distinctive Christian character, is ‘Outstanding’ at meeting the needs of all learners; The effectiveness of the Religious Education is ‘Outstanding’ and the effectiveness of the leadership and management of the school as a church school is ‘Outstanding.’ There is a very special team at St Matthew’s. The school has a strong presence and spirituality. The report states: ‘Behaviour and consideration for others is exemplary and demonstrates the strong level of respect and support shown by pupils for each other and for those of different faiths and cultures. In these times when Church schools are sometimes criticised, it was a pleasure to see our report echoing everything that is good about St Matthew’s and celebrating everything that is Outstanding about Church of England schools. I would like to say an enormous thank you to Reverend Elisabeth Burke and Reverend Bussmann for being a very important part of our Inspection. Reverend Burke led our Collective Worship, and both Reverend Burke and Reverend Bussmann spoke to the Inspector. We value our links with All Saints greatly and their support was much appreciated. We are all very sorry that Reverend Bussmann and Kerry are leaving. They have both been extremely supportive of St

Matthew’s and wonderful ambassadors for the strong links between school and Church. Everyone here wishes you both well, and the very best of luck for your future plans.
