Flowers for the

Cathedral and

the Homebound

You will notice that in your packet of contribution envelopes, there is an envelope for flowers for Easter. In addition to using this collection to decorate the Cathedral for Easter, we would like to send a lily plant to all our ill and homebound parishioners. Many of these people have worshipped in the Cathedral for years and are now confined to their homes. Your generous response to this collection will help to defray the cost of flowers and plants. If you know of anyone who is ill or homebound, please call the rectory at (516) 766-0205 with the name, address and phone number of that person.

Stewardship

A Way of Life

This Week’s Readings

“You shall not covet” is a difficult commandment to keep in our consumer society. But as Christian stewards, we know that we are the recipients and caretakers of God’s many gifts. May this realization that all is a gift help us to be less resentful of the gifts of others.

In Living Stewardship

We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who make a conscious effort to simplify their lives by reprioritizing and getting back to basics.

5 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

St. Agnes Cathedral School Principal’s Announcements

O God, author of every mercy and of all goodness, who in fasting, prayer and almsgiving has shown us a remedy for sin,

look graciously on this confession of our lowliness, that we, who are bowed down by our conscience, may always be lifted up by your mercy.

How is your Lent going? Do you need some motivation? Consider attending a weekly meeting every Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. in the Youth Room on the 2nd floor of the Ministry Building. Each meeting will feature a 10-15 minute presentation, followed by 30 minutes of discussion with Fr. Seth. The children are continuing to keep their Lenten promises and should be sacrificing some of their snack money to put in their Rice Bowls as well as contribute to the Parish Lenten Project supporting Fr. Seth’s church in Ghana. The children received envelopes for their contributions. This week the students in Grades 5-8 will show off their science, technology, engineering and mathematical abilities with their STEM projects. Thank you to all who helped and assisted in this endeavor. From the projects presented, two will be entered into the Diocesan STEM Fair on April 14th. Good luck to all. Please join me on Wednesday, March 7th for our monthly school Mass. This month’s Mass is being hosted by the 3rd grade. Please note, Wednesday is a FULL day of school. The Create-A-Book Program continues this week for Grade 1 on Thursday, March 8th and Friday, March 9th. Scoliosis screening will take place for students in Grades 5 and 6 on Thursday, March 8th and on Friday, March 9th for students in Grades 7 and 8. Next weekend, Saturday and Sunday March 10th and 11th are the Confirmation Preparation Masses. Eighth Graders and their parents are asked to attend either the 5 P.M. on Saturday night or the 9:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Applications for admission to St. Agnes Cathedral School for the 2018-2019 school year are now being accepted. The school has been educating children in the Catholic faith for 100 years! We have so much to offer, including: advanced math and science classes for our middle school students, an automated parent notification system, secured access to your child’s grades throughout the school year, aftercare, extracurricular activities, sports programs, and much, much more, all in a faith-based environment. Children entering Kindergarten must be five years of age by Dec. 1, 2018. Children entering Grades 1-6 must present their most recent report card and standardized test results. Applicants must present a birth certificate and baptismal certificate (if applicable) upon registration and $100.00 non-refundable registration fee for grades 1-6 and a $200.00 non-refundable registration fee for Kindergarten. Acceptance is contingent upon screening. Tuition assistance is available through the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation. Applications are available on the Foundation’s website: www.tomorrowshopefoundation.org Peace and blessings,

Abstinence and Fasting

All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are bound to observe the laws of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting means limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Two other light meals, which together do not equal a full meal, may be taken during the day.

Stations of the Cross

You are invited to join us in the Cathedral at 7:30 p.m. during the Fridays of Lent to remember Christ’s passion and death by praying the Stations of the Cross.

Lenten Parish Project 2018

Our Lenten project this year will once again assist Fr. Seth Awo-Doku’s church in Ghana. Materials explaining the project are available at the doors of the Cathedral and in the rectory office.

In the envelope you will find a flyer about St. Clement Catholic Church in Nuaso, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. This is Fr. Seth’s home village. The church was not completed due to financial difficulties. Your generosity last year helped continue the work and your donation this year will help complete the installation of the roof, concrete floor and vestry. Putting aside some sacrificial offering over the course of Lent and then making your donation will add to the meaning of your contribution as will the prayers you offer for the success of this endeavor. God bless you for your prayers and sacrifices. Checks may be made payable to St. Agnes Cathedral. Please be sure to write “St. Clement, Ghana” on the memo line and include your parish envelope number.

Lent and Easter 2018 Weekly Discussions Parishioners and guests are invited to gather once a week to discuss pertinent topics during the coming seasons of Lent and Easter: to learn and deepen our knowledge in the liturgies and sacraments of the two great seasons. There will be a total of 12 meetings: 5 in Lent and 7 in the Easter Season. We will meet every Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. in the Youth Room on the 2nd floor of the Ministry Building. (No meeting during Holy Week—March 28th).The last meeting will be May 16th. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. There is no need to register; join us as your schedule allows. Each session will feature a 10-15 minute presentation, followed by 30 minutes of discussions with our moderator, Fr. Seth.
