TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Ash Wednesday is not observed by Eastern Christians, perhaps because, at least in Orthodox practice, weekdays are not proper days for the Divine Liturgy. Typically, "Great Lent" has a bit of a prelude. On "Meatfare Sunday" the faithful have their last chance to eat meat for the entire period of Great Lent. A week later, "Cheesefare Sunday" has dairy on the menu for the last time until Pascha (Easter). At twilight on Cheesefare Sunday, officially called "Sunday of Forgiveness." the church gathers for "Forgiveness Vespers." The faithful identify with Adam and Eve, forgiving one another in order to experience God's forgiveness. The desire to

set aside all bitterness, and to achieve harmony and reconciliation in the family and with one's neighbors gives a remarkable energy to the transition into the days of penitence. At the end of the vespers liturgy, the décor of the church is changed to reflect the new season.

How is your Lenten fast going? Imagine the Eastern tradition. No meat, no fish, no dairy, no wine or oil. Some traditions permit vegetable oil; everyone goes without olive oil. Happily, strict fasting is not permitted on the Sabbath or the Lord's Day, so on Saturday and Sunday the fast is somewhat mitigated, and wine and oil are allowed. If the Feast of the Annunication falls during Great Lent, then fish may be served.

Monday, March 21st at 7:30 pm

During the Mass, Bishop David O’Connell will bless the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick, and consecrate the Sacred Chrism. We use the first for adult catechumens and infants, the second for anointing the sick, and the Sacred Chrism for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests, and the consecration of altars. These oils will be received by the parish at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper and will be used for sacramental life of our parish.

Did you know? Chrism is made of olive oil and is scented with a sweet perfume, usually balsam.

Spiritual Adoption Week Twenty Five

The joints, ligament, and rings of my spine are developing to protect my spinal cord - the

information transmitter for my body. I’d better see my chiropractor to keep my spine aligned!

I’m beginning to look pink, as small blood vessels, called capillaries, form under my skin and fill

with blood. Blood vessels are forming in my lungs also and my nostrils, which had been plugged

shut, are opening. So now I can get ready for my big day by practicing “breathing” amniotic fluid.

Please keep praying.

My Dear Parishioners: Today we celebrate the Third Sunday of Lent. Suffering for suffering’s sake is not what transforms us so that we can bear fruit—the dying that leads to new life is how we bear fruit. The dying that repentance requires forestalls meaningless dying; the dying we do in order to bear fruit is the result of cultivating an attitude of openness to constant transformation; the “fertilizer” is the charity, fasting, and prayer of our Christian penance. Repentance is cultivating the soil so it can bear fruit. Repentance is taking what is dying and coaxing it to life. Repentance is changing one’s mind, letting go of the narrowness of our own perception of how life should be and embracing the expansiveness of God’s plan for salvation. Repentance, in terms of changing one’s mind, is really conversion. Although repentance and conversion are major Lenten themes (and surely capture the work of preparation for our renewal of baptismal commitment), this isn’t something we do only these six weeks out of the year. Lent (dying) and Easter (rising) characterize our Christian living, concretize our baptismal commitment, spell out the paschal mystery. If we wish to bear fruit we must die to ourselves. Interesting paradox: if we don’t bear fruit, we die, but we must die to bear fruit. The choice before us is about dying: meaningless dying (selfishness) or fruitful dying (to self for the sake of others). The gospel parable says for “three years” the owner of the fig tree had been waiting for good fruit. God waits more than three years for us to bear fruit—God waits each and every day of our lives for us to bear fruit. The good news is that God never gives up. God continually cultivates and fertilizes—especially by the ongoing proclamation of God’s word and the invitation to God’s table. All we need do is

respond by dying to self. Then God brings forth new life in us.

March is upon us. Spring is on the horizon. We will soon change our clocks forward. The daylight is longer, the night is shortened. Our Sunday Evening Mass will conclude next Sunday, 6 March 2016. We are well into our Lenten Journey. Let us stay the course and not be tempted. More frequent reception of Holy Communion, Penance and opportunities for prayer can assist us during this time of reflection and renewal. We are assembling the schedule for Holy Week. Please consider being part of these historic and prayerful liturgies. Our parish is recognized for the beauty, simplicity and prayerfulness of our liturgical life. This is a credit to all those who sacrifice their time and talent in order to support all that we do and the customs we maintain as we give honor and praise to God. The Easter Mailing will be sent out this coming week. Take time to carefully review all of the contents.

We have electronically sent a link to all of our registered parishioners who have shared their email address with us for the FAITH IN OUR FUTURE SURVEY. Please take a few moments to participate in this survey. Prayerfully reply so that we can use your feedback as we prepare for our future and as we dialogue with our “cohort” parishes. Those without computers or needing assistance to participate in this important survey, please contact the parish office. Your honest and balanced response will greatly assist us in providing for the needs of our Catholic community now and in the future. Have a great week. Let us remember one another in prayer. Happy Sunday Peace. Father Jeff

Catholic Relief Services represents the Catholic community in the US and in more than 100 countries around the world helping 100 million people each year.

This work is carefully reviewed by a board of bishops and by a committee of moral theologians to ensure that it is consistent with Catholic teaching. Every misleading message included in the latest Lepanto posting has been thoroughly reviewed by CRS staff, as well as bishops and moral theologians. So it is disappointing and disturbing that this group continues to raise funds by repeating the same discredited claims and misleading the faithful in an attempt to breed discontent and distract from the wonderful work Catholics are accomplishing around the world. As the Administrative Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said in 2013, these groups ‘do not speak for the Catholic Church and we advise the Catholic faithful to exercise caution and consult the CRS website for clarification before endorsing or giving credence to the groups’ critiques.’ We stand by this counsel.
