THE POPE’S PRAYER INTENTION FOR JANUARY 2017

That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial

communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity.

World Day for Consecrated Life Since 1997, the universal Church has cele-brated the World Day for Consecrated Life. On Thurs-day, February 2, 2017 in the Cathedral Basilica at 7:30 PM on the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord the Archdiocese will observe this day with the special emphasis on the call to consecrated life in to-day’s world. His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Tobin invites all the faithful to gather in celebration, support and thanksgiving with Evening Prayer with the blessing and lighting of candles. Come join in the unceasing prayer of the church.

February 3 is the Feast of St. Blaise St. Blaise’s Feast Day blessing of throats has been

a long custom in the Church. We will bless throats after all

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION February 2nd’s

Feast of the Presentation is a day for the blessing of candles. Why does liturgy require

candles? In the first years of the church, worship was often at night, and candles and torches were carried from place to place within the worship space as needed. Candles were also a mark of festivity and hospitali-ty when people gathered for prayer in homes, and later on in large buildings with thick walls and dark corners. But even after gaslight and electricity, can-dles were kept. Part of the reason has to do with the warm, clean light of a candle’s flame. Candles are a good sign of the partnership of God and creation: wax made by bees, gathered and fashioned by human hands into something beautiful and useful. In order for the light to shine, the candle surrenders itself, almost as if it is pouring itself out so that the light can flood into the world. The candle of baptism, placed into our hands, and carried again and again, speaks silently of that same wisdom. If you would save your life, you must lose it. You must pour your life out like Christ so that you may be filled with the light of his love.

The Feast of the Presentation (Candlemas Day)

The Feast of the Presentation In fact, according to Luke’s Gospel, the presentation of Jesus and the purification of the Blessed Mother took place in the Temple on the same day, and both are remembered during Mass on Feb. 2. Al-so, in several countries, Candlemas is simultaneously celebrated on this day

and involves a candlelight procession that was popular-ized in the Middle Ages. Until the Second Vatican Coun-cil the feasts on Feb. 2 ended the Christmas season. To-day, the season ends in January on the feast of the Bap-tism of our Lord. As early as the fourth century Christians commemorated the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, but, at the time, there was no feast name attached. In seventh-century Rome, the Church named the celebration the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Mother Mary, and it remained that way for nearly 1,300 years. In the reforms after Vat-ican II, the feast was given a stronger focus on Jesus (by stressing the Presentation of Jesus), but clearly the events of purification and presentation that took place when Jesus was 40 days old are tied together and thus com-memorated together. Purification and Presentation . Under Mosaic law found in the Old Testament Book of Leviticus, a Jewish wom-an who gave birth to a child was considered unclean. The mother of a newborn could not routinely go out into pub-lic and had to avoid all things sacred, including the Tem-ple. If her child was a male, this exclusion lasted for 40 days. If the child was female, the period lasted 80 days. This was a ceremonial seclusion and not the result of sin or some kind of wrongdoing on the part of the moth-er. At the end of the 40 or 80 days the woman presented herself at the Temple to be purified. If the baby was her firstborn male child, the infant was brought along to the Temple to be dedicated to the Lord. The law in Exodus specifies that the first male child belongs to God. This law is a tribute to God for His sparing the firstborn Isra-elite males during the time of the Exodus from Egypt. The firstborn Egyptian male children, of course, were not spared. The mother’s purification ritual obliged her to bring, or purchase at the Temple, a lamb and a turtledove as sacri-ficial offerings. The lamb was offered in thanksgiving to God for the successful birth of the child; the turtledove was a sin offering. Families that could not afford a lamb could bring two pigeons or two turtledoves. After these animals were sacrificed, the Temple priest prayed over the woman and she could once again resume her normal role or status. Mary, the ever spotless Mother of God, certainly did not have to comply with this ritual, but did so to honor God and observe all the rules handed down by Moses. She was the holiest of all women, but she still submitted to the humbling requirements of the law. She remained at home for 40 days, denied herself all association with sa-cred things and on the day required walked the five miles from Bethlehem to the Temple in Jerusalem. Arriving at the Temple, Mary likely stood in line and waited her turn to see the priest.

The Bayonne Soup Kitchen began al-most 10 years as an effort between St. Mary, St. Andrew and Assumption. With the closing of Assumption

we transferred the location back to All Saints Cath-olic Academy, where it first was located. Blessed Miriam Teresa Parish is committed to 6 months every year to cook and serve our guests. We managed to get through 2016 with the help of various community groups. We are reach-ing out to you, the other 3 Latin Rite parishes to help us manage the other 6 months of the year. It is good to have the outside groups, but we would like to keep it as a Catholic outreach. There are members of your parishes who are ready already involved. Each weekend is handled by various groups like our Rosary and Holy Name societies, etc, so that it is not the responsibility of the same people always. There is also a coordinator who makes sure that all weekends are covered. BMT Parish will continue to provide the supplies and pay for the cleaning, but we need your help. We are reaching out to the groups who helped last year. The following months are with-out any commitments: February (with the excep-tion of the 11th which already has been filled), March, May, June, September and Decem-ber. I and the people who have been running this for these past 10 years are here to answer any questions you might have. 2 Febbraio : Candelora, la presentazione di Gesù al Tempio Oggi la Chiesa cattolica celebra la Presentazione al Tempio di Gesù (passo biblico Lc 2,22-39) , popo-larmente chiamata Candelora, perché in questo gior-no si benedicono le candele, simbolo di Cristo "luce per illuminare le genti", come il bambino Gesù venne chiamato dal Simeone; tale usanza che era prescritta dalla Legge giudaica per i primogeniti maschi. La festa è anche detta della Purificazione di Maria, perché, secondo l'usanza ebraica, una donna era considerata impura per un periodo di quaran-ta giorni dopo il parto di un maschio e doveva an-dare al Tempio per purificarsi: da Natale ad oggi sono trascorsi infatti 40 giorni. Preghiera a Maria nella presentazione di Gesù al Tempio O Maria, tu oggi sei salita umilmente al Tempio, portando il tuo divin Figlio e lo hai offerto al Padre per la salvezza di tutti gli uomini. Oggi lo Spirito Santo ha rivelato al mondo che Cris-to è la gloria di Israele e la luce delle genti. Ti preghiamo, o Vergine santa, presenta anche noi, che pure siamo tuoi figli,al Signore e fa' che, rinno-vati nello spirito, possiamo camminare nella luce di Cristo finché lo incontreremo glorioso nella vita eterna.

wania Pańskiego. Czyni to na pamiątkę ofiarowania przez Maryję i Józefa ich

pierworodnego syna, Jezusa, w świątyni jerozolimskiej. W polskiej tradycji jest to

też święto Matki Bożej Gromnicznej. W tym dniu podczas każdej Mszy

św. będzie poświęcenie świec. W następnym tygodniu będzie możliwość

zakupienia takiej świecy. Cena $10.

2 lutego przypada także Dnia Życia Konsekrowanego. Siostry i bracia zakonni,

podobnie jak Jezus w świątyni Jerozolimskiej, ofiarowują swoje życie na wyłączną służbę Bogu.

W Polsce święto ma charakter zdecydowanie maryjny - Matki Bożej Gromnicznej. Tak jak

Maryja wniosła Jezusa do świątyni jerozolimskiej, tak też przynosi światło wierzącym. W kościele dokonuje się poświecenia gromnic. Zapalone

gromnice daje się do rąk konającym.
