FAITH IN ACTION

We are called to walk by faith and to put that faith into action. Good works naturally flow from our faith in God who is Good. The Lord Himself created everything and all He created was good. Unfortunately, human beings have at times distorted the goodness of God’s creation. In today’s readings, the Lord God encourages us to care for others in specific ways: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. The season of Lent begins on March 9. In the meantime, we can reflect on how to carry out the wishes of God. There are many who hunger for the necessities of life. How can we reach out to them? What can we do for the homeless and for those whose homes are no longer shel-ters for them? What are we going to do with the clothes which we no longer wear? How well are we treating the members of our own family? The Lord says, “Let your light shine before others.” let us not forget that many times even a small light can shatter the darkness for those whom we love and for those whom we may not even know. May all of our acts of goodness

UPDATE ON HERITAGE OF FAITH ~ VISION OF HOPE CAMPAIGN

St. Dominic Parish has pledged $401,370 to the cam-paign. The parish portion of the collected donations will be $140,479. This money will start to be avail-able sometime in June or July. The entire amount will become available over the next 3 to 5 years. I thank all of you who pledged to this campaign. Your sacrifice will help the diocesan goals and will certainly help our parish. We will need to scale back on some of our goals but I am sure that this money will be used for new bathroom facilities in Church; a new air-conditioning unit in Church and a Tuition en-dowment fund for School. Again, thank you for your generosity and your Faith and Hope in St. Dominic’s Parish. May God bless you. Take care. Father Kearns

To the entire St. Dominic family, we thank you for your continued generosity!”

CALL TO CONVERSION AND HOLINESS Called to conversion and holiness, the Church of Philadelphia must draw our life from the Holy Eucharist, which stands at the center of the Church’s life. The Eucharist, which is the saving presence of Christ in the community of the faithful, is the Church’s most precious possession as we journey through life. When we celebrate Eucharist, the central event of salvation becomes present and the work of re-demption is carried out. Jesus left us the Eucharist to share in his sacrifice for the salvation of the human race. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucha-rist are one single sacrifice (1367). John Paul II in Ecclesia de Eucharistia states: “Every commitment to holiness, every activity aimed at carrying out the Church’s mission, every work of pastoral planning, must draw the strength it needs from the Eucharistic mystery and in turn be directed to that mystery as its culmination.” You are invited to read Cardinal Rigali’s Pas-toral Letter that can be found on the home page of the Archdiocese—www.archphila.org.

SACRED VESTMENTS The praying Church makes use of sacred vestments: festive clothes different from those worn in everyday life. Litur-gical vesture imparts a certain grace to the movements of the priest, deacon, and other ministers; more deeply, it is a call to adoration “in spirit and in truth” (Jn 4:23). Both for those who wear them and those who see them worn, the liturgical vest-ments are a compelling invitation to “worship the Lord in holy array” (Ps 96:9). The alb is a long white robe common to priests, dea-cons, and to those entrusted with a special liturgical service. An amice, or white neck scarf, is worn under the alb to cover the ordinary clothing at the neck. The alb is tied at the waist with a cincture. The vestment proper to the priest celebrant at Mass is the chasuble, an ample tent-like garment. The chasuble is worn over the alb and stole, a long narrow band made of the same fabric and color as the chasuble. The priest wears the stole around his neck, allowing it to hang down in front. The deacon wears the stole over his shoulder and drawn across the chest to the right side where it is fastened; over the alb and stole the dea-con wears the dalmatic, a kind of tunic with wide sleeves. In the United States of America, acolytes, altar servers, lectors, extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, and other lay ministers may wear the alb or other suitable and dignified clothing. Sacred vesture remains for all Catholics a reminder that going to church calls for modest and appropriate attire. Clothes do not make the Christian, but can express reverence for the presence of God and respect for the brothers and sisters with whom we worship. “Above all these,” says Saint Paul, “put on love which binds everything together in perfect har-mony” (Colossians 3:14). (These weekly inserts concern the changes in the Mass.)

RACHEL’S VINEYARD MINISTRIES Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats is an extraordinary opportunity for any person who struggles with emotional and spiritual pain of past abortions. The weekend is a unique and effec-tive process designed specifically to help you experience the mercy and compassion of God. There are many exer-cises to help you grieve your loss and an opportunity to understand and release the deep feelings of anger, shame, guilt, and grief that frequently accompanies an abortion experience. This process is extremely helpful for those who struggle with forgiving themselves or others. The weekend will help your soul find a voice, and transform the pain of the past into hope. Rachel’s Vineyard is a “therapy for the soul” which combines a unique and creative process for psychological and spiritual healing. Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries will be hosting a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat for Healing after Abortion on March 18-20, 2011 in Doyles-town, PA. For more information call Mary Zayacheck at 215-489-5456.
