.
As an Irishman, I have come to notice that there are
different kinds of Irish people. Recently, (around St.
Patrick’s Day), I had the pleasure of meeting a
number of “once a year Irishmen”. They come out
of the woodwork that time of year. Every pub is
crowded with them. I remember one time when I was
a psychologist in a public school system, going into a
classroom on St. Patrick’s Day and asking a student
bedecked in green (including his hair), did he know
where Ireland was? “Of course”, he replied, “it’s
down there near Cuba”. Well, not knowing where
the place was did not stop him from celebrating his
“heritage”, and more power to him!
Here in church at this time of the year, we get to meet
many once a year (or twice a year) Catholics. We see
a lot of people we don’t ordinarily see, on Ash
Wednesday, and of course, even more on this
weekend of Palm Sunday. Ashes and Palms; today
we welcome the “A & P Catholics!”
Now if you are an A&P Catholic, don’t get me
wrong. I am not a Palm Sunday Grinch. I am not so
steeped in authentic Catholicism as to forget that we
all share a lot more than we disagree on. Wherever
our origins are from, whether we are from Europe,
Africa or South America or anywhere else, now we
are all Americans, and we share a common legacy
and a common history. And since we are all here
today, we also share, and celebrate with varying
intensity, a common faith and a common religious
heritage. And we all celebrate it in a different way,
and with different levels of intensity and
commitment.
Today, Palm Sunday, marks the beginning of Holy
Week – the most solemn and important week of
the year for Catholics throughout the world. The
schedule of liturgies at St. Catharine-St. Margaret
parish can be found elsewhere in this bulletin. Please
look at it. I hope that you can participate to the
greatest degree possible. You owe it to yourself and
to your Savior to be counted amongst those who
solemnly observe the sacred mysteries of our
redemption on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of this
holy week.

liturgical year and of the spiritual life of the Church.
The liturgies are sublimely beautiful and thought
provoking. Open yourself during Holy Week to the
Word of God like no other week of the year. Allow
yourself to be filled with the spirit and the changing
emotions of the three most sacred days of the year.

St. Catharine – St. Margaret Parish
Strategic Plan 2017 – Update Greetings fellow parishioners from your Parish Pastoral
Council. We wanted to provide an update on one of the
key issues that surfaced during the 2 Town Hall meetings
held on January 25th and February 1st, respectively.
Parishioners attending the Town Halls expressed a strong
desire to be able to review the Parish Survey results that
were a critical component of the Faith in Our Future
Planning Initiative. To address that request, Mary Lou Oliva and Dr. Jack
Kirnan have prepared a summary document that describes
the actual process and methodology that was employed by
the CORE Faith in Our Future Team (Mary Lou, Maureen
Martin, Mary Ann Christopher, and Rich Diver) in
constructing the Parish Survey questionnaire. The
document also presents the actual Parish Survey results for
each of the 25 questions covered by the survey. Given the
length of the document, parishioners are invited to review
the survey results by accessing the following link to the
Parish website:
http://stcatharine-stmargaret.org/faith-in-our-future/. The results reported in the document include 744
completed questionnaires (522 online and another 222 in
traditional paper format). Charts were generated for each
of the 25 questions along with accompanying Tables that
present the specific breakdown of the raw data.
Parishioners can access the webpage via the following

plan-2017.
Daughters of St. Catharine and
St. Margaret
Our next meeting is Thursday, April 20, 2017 @ 7:00PM in St. Margaret Hall
Our guest speaker will be Steve Feinman, CEO of Visiting Angels.
Visiting Angels is a non-medical homecare agency who can help people get back to the lifestyle they are used to living, while maintaining their dignity in their own home. Three questions to ask yourselves regarding home care:
1. What everyday activities do you or a loved one struggle with?
2. As you or a loved one grows older, why is it important to stay in your home and not move into a facility?
3. Would your day be more pleasant if you had a Visiting Angel?
For questions or more information, please call 732-213-7475 or email [email protected]

DIOCESAN CHRISM MASS
The Chrism Mass will be held on Monday, April 10th at the Co-Cathedral of St. Robert Bellarmine, 61 Georgia Rd, Freehold at 7.30 PM. The Chrism Mass is one of the principal expressions of the fullness of the unity of Bishop’s priesthood and signifies the close unity of the priests with him. All the priests of the Diocese are invited to concelebrate the Mass with the Bishop and to renew their priestly commitment during the Mass. Members of the parish are encouraged to attend; and especially candidates who are preparing for confirmation, since participation in the Chrism Mass would be a special and meaningful preparation for this sacrament. The Oil of Chrism that will be used at the confirmation ceremony will be blessed and consecrated at this Mass.
SPIRITUALITY and THE ARTS announces young virtuosos in concert at St. Catharine Church. These brilliant performers are the recent winners of the Suburban Music Study Club of Madison, NJ G R A C E G I M B E L Y O U N G A R T I S T SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION. They are not to be missed.

Tenebrae at St Catharine’s Bishop O’Connell will lead a traditional Tenebrae
service in both English and Latin, at St.. Catharine
Church on the Wednesday of Holy Week, April 12th, at
7:30PM. A schola from the Westminster Conservatory
of Music, Lawrenceville, and readers, will be the main
participants voicing the texts, allowing the congregation
to act as prayerful witnesses.
Tenebrae, an ancient prayer custom which means
“shadows” occurs on Wednesday of Holy Week, also
known as “Spy Wednesday”, opening the Sacred
Triduum. Basically a funeral service for the Lord,
Tenebrae takes place primarily in the dark.
Parishioners who attended this event last year will
remember how powerful and moving and solemn this
ceremony was. Mark your calendar so you don’t forget!

St. Catharine's Classics are once again pleased to
announce our 2017 Annual Day of Retreat. Some of
us are very familiar with what a retreat is about,
while others may ask; "What is a retreat?" "What is
the purpose of it?”
We see in Jesus a man who always withdrew from the
crowd after a day's work to a quiet place where he
could pray. That is why as Catholics we believe in
making a retreat so that we may take a break from
our daily engagements to encounter God in perfect
reflection.
A retreat is best done in quiet. St. Catharine's
Classics is giving such an opportunity to its
members and all others who wish to come, that
perfect peaceful quiet place at San Alfonso House to
find that deeper relationship with the Lord.
