FROM THE DESK OF FR. ARENS

My friends,

This week brings us some very important days in regard to our faith. On Tuesday, we celebrate All Saints Day. Every year we devote one day a year to recognize all people who are in heaven and ask for their prayers. This is a very important celebration because we rely on the prayers of those in heaven for many things. This feast is a Holy Day of Obligation meaning that Catholics have the obligation to attend Mass either on the day or the evening before. Please see the schedule in the bulletin for Mass times.

On Wednesday, we observe the Commemoration of all the faithful departed, or All Souls Day. On this day, we remember the souls of all who have died who are in purgatory awaiting entrance into heaven. On this day we especially offer prayers for our loved ones who have died and assist them on their journey to heaven. This day is not a holy day of obligation, but on this day each priest is given the privilege to celebrate three Masses. Please note the extra Masses for this observance as well.

As we conclude the month of October, we also conclude Pro-life month. This month has been an important reminder that as Catholics, and followers of Jesus, we all have the serious obligation to do all we can to protect and defend human life. In our nation, the unborn, especially the unborn of minority groups, are in serious danger from the grave evil of abortion. A nation that does not protect its most vulnerable and defenseless is not fulfilling its divinely instituted duty to protect its innocent citizens. There is no issue of graver importance in our nation, since if one is not allowed to be born; there is nothing else for that person. For the aborted child, a future, a vocation, and a person with a God given purpose and destiny are destroyed. With statistics as they are, it's very likely that even some of the future priests of our diocese have been aborted. And in a diocese where having even one more priest would mean that some parishes scheduled for closing would be able to remain open, this is very important to remember. As St. Mother Teresa reminded us, a nation that destroys its own children cannot survive. May God have mercy on our nation so that we do not receive the punishment we deserve.

As followers of Jesus, we have to be people of hope. Even in the midst of these great evils, God's grace can triumph and hearts can be converted over to the infinite love of the Heart of Jesus. In this Year of Mercy, we pray especially for this, since God always wills the conversion of the sinner. Mercy is always available, even for those who have made choices against life. May all hearts know of the love of Jesus' Heart and see the good things that flow from His mercy.

In Christ, Fr. Arens

PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY, the last Sunday of October, is a special day to honor priests. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. Please join in praying for our priests, in praising God for their courage and their generosity. This week, make your appreciation for our own Father Patrick Arens known. A simple note, a smile or a phone call to assure him of your loving care and gratitude for his presence in the life of our church and our communities will go a long way to serve the greater good of our wonderful and growing Catholic Church.

LET’S SUPPORT OUR parishioners and their families who serve or have served this nation with distinction as members of the U.S. military. The Collection for the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA will provide the Gospel, the sacraments and other forms of spiritual support to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces wherever they serve and to veterans who are in VA medical centers. Please prayerfully consider a generous contribution to this special triennial collection approved by the Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2012 and last taken in 2013. Envelopes can be found in your church pews and returned in the collection basket.

THE LAKEFIELD COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN will hold their Annual Chili/Soup Supper from 4:00 - 6:00 PM on Sunday, November 6th, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lakefield. This year we will include a Bake Sale. The menu includes Chili, Chicken Noodle and Broccoli Soups, Ham Sandwiches, Desserts and Beverage. Adults $7, 5-10 years $5, 4 & under Free.

LIFE IS A GIFT from God but sometimes the gift comes at a difficult time and abortion may seem like the only solution. Catholic Charities reaches out to women in a crisis pregnancy situation with a 24/7 pregnancy information line to help and support women to choose life for their baby. Catholic Charities’ Mother and Child Assistance Fund helps pregnant women to carry their baby to term by providing direct financial support and helps new parents overcome the barriers they face. For more information about the Mother Child Assistance Fund call Catholic Charities in Mankato at 507-387-5586 or in Worthington at 507-376-9757 or the hotline at 1-800-222-5859.

God is working things out for you, even when you don't feel it. HAVE FAITH AND BE THANKFUL!
