1 Peter 2:5

Like living stones, let yourselves be built into

a spiritual house Many ways are given in the scriptures to de-scribe our lives as the People of God — most recently as the sheep of God’s flock. Now Peter describes us as living stones being built daily by God into a work of art, a house of God. Such poetic imagery, however, attempts to give a deep-er understanding of this dynamic relationship we have with God, the Great Artist, the Hidden Archi-tect of our lives. It’s interesting to note that the building together of these living stones presumes a plan, maybe even many redrawn plans, as we humans don’t always fit where originally envisioned and may have to be Spirit re-hewn to better lodge in that “just right” spot where peace surrounds us and positive vibrations emanate from us.

Our former bishop, Leroy Matthiesen, had a wonderful ability to journal about the happenings around him — he called his articles “Wise and Otherwise”. I al-ways admired his writing, whether faith-filled or faith-challenging. LENTEN ALMS — It is an honor to pass on your Lenten Alms in the amount of $11,000 to Sr. Juanita Albracht’s Hospice in Peru. Innumerable good will come, I’m sure, from each sacrifice you and your family made for these dying home-less individuals ministered to in the digni-ty of care she and her staff offer — “What you do to the least you do to Me”. HOLY FAMILY CEMETERY — You have noticed, I’m sure, the changes in the cemetery as the Parish Council continues to give dignified care to the graves of our loves ones. Over a dozen new plots are available because of the change of the sidewalk in the “new section”, even while long-range plans are being implemented for the “new new” north section. Speak-ing of dignified care, we were all im-pressed with the placement Thursday of the headstone for the late Marian Ehly Durbin. The National Memorial Planning Co. out of San Angelo (800-825-7625)offered not just a monument but a caring expertise in the foundation and placement of the stone that I’ve not seen before. They advertise that they work anywhere in Texas — kudos for their communica-tion with our Cemetery Committee and their reverent attitude about the cemetery.

Luke Michael — that’s a Christian name that speaks volumes of meaning for its new honoree, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Birkenfeld, who have just this week moved back to the area. In a world where many parents choose names for their chil-dren that have no rhyme or reason, much less grace-filled meaning, it is a great gift that the parents have given this child. As I’ve noted before (and may again repeat in future jottings) children’s names have been proven to make life more or less easy for the bearer. “Oh, I see, you spell your child’s name, Phlaurina with a ph — but, it’s silent” “Is it a girl or a boy?” “I see, your pet hamster had that same name — how special for your child!”

is the theme of the United Catholic Appeal this year that begins today with your pledge to the ministry and outreach of the Diocese under Bishop Zurek. With the leadership of the Bishop, the UCA has not increased signif-icantly, and his tight over-seeing of diocesan ministry expenditures has been worth noting. As Catholics, we are part of the larger univer-sal church and experience this grace-filled connection through the Bishop as our episco-pal shepherd. We honor the oneness and apostolic connection even as we offer our contributions to his ministry. Holy Family Parish’s pre-diocesan-budget assessment is $27,764, which is just less than we pledged last year ($29,025) and so we can

reach that goal if all share graciously as we did last year. Thank you.
