The Palestine Diabetes Institute, launched in July 2009 by the Jerusalem Fund for Education and Community Development (www.thejerusalemfund.org), is located in Al-Bireh, Palestine. Moving from rented space in Ramallah, the Institute now occupies two floors (800 square meters) and has two staff endocrinologists, lab technicians, a nurse and an assistant. The Institute addresses the growing diabetes epidemic in Palestine through education and treatment and is the first such facility in Palestine.

An independent think-tank providing the educational program for Education and Community Development

Emphasizes the essence and diverse perspectives of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through policy briefings, lecture series, conferences, an extensive research library and scholarly publications

The Jerusalem Fund is a non-profit organization that independently does educational/humanitarian work on behalf of Palestinians

To implement its missions, The Jerusalem Fund maintains 3 programs

Currently, the Palestinian scene suffers from high diabetes rate, lack of resources (physical, human and

financial), and difficulty of accessThe Issues/ Challenges

Military closures, cash and medicine shortages and rampant overcrowding of facilities add to the burden of diabetes

Life under current occupation, with its high unemployment, travel restrictions and limited public resources, makes Palestinians even more vulnerable to non-treatment dangers of Diabetes (fatal strokes, amputations, blindness, chronic dental disease, heart failure and nerve damage)

Shortages in Specialized Care

All diabetic patients are treated with only 2 of the 7 available drugs

There is a scarcity of glucometers with less than 2% of Palestinians using them regularly
