A giant THANK YOU to everyone who helped make VBS a success this year! We had 175 children reg-istered, and it was a really fun week. The Theme this year was “God’s Big Backyard: Where Kids Have a Blast Serving Jesus” and the campers (from preschool-8th grade) learned about God’s love for them and how to share that love with oth-ers through service. They learned while playing games, singing songs,

making crafts, making puppets, doing service projects, and occasionally being really silly. As part of their service to all of God’s children, the students brought offering throughout the week for Lutheran Disaster Response, an ELCA organization that works with lo-cal and community groups in areas where disasters have occurred to provide assistance to those affected. Our camps wouldn’t work without our volunteers, and I am so grateful to everyone who gave their time and talents to make this week the wonderful ministry op-portunity that it was. Here is a list of those who helped us out this week: Monte Hummel, Pastor Anne Smith, Monica Swope, Chris Olson, Rita Spohn, Sondra Aman, Sueanne Daley, Cassidy Daley, Caitlyn Daley, Nancy Hazen, Terra Hazen, Deb Schnook, Audrey Churchill, Cookie Hanlon, Jo Carson, Lara Carson, Pastor Mark Price, Lisa Price, Edwin Pacheco, Amanda Lang, Katherine Taddei, Dorothy Schmidt, Jan Flannery, Victorya Wohl, Shawnee Mettler, Vickie Richards, Jasmine Kiesz, Sarah Tingsedahl, Jonas Knudson, Ruth Diek-man, Audrey Simon, Carly Whittaker, Maddy Osborn, Judy Porteous, Karla Franck, Nancy Caplin, Denise Reich, Monica Partida, David Simon, Chloe Aker, Carra Ramos, Kelsey Churchill, Jocelyn Garcia, Jas-mine Quinones, Courtney Wallace, Lauren Ianni, Jenna Ianni, Leann Basden, Jaspreet Singh, Alyssa Culver, Bonnie Kiedrowski, Sheryl Fabrizio, Toni Tucker, Darlene Lassanske, Hilary Wagner, Kathy Girard, Phil Honkala, Sheryl Cook, El Joan Shealor, Mike Ferri, Chris Andrews, Oscar Dominguez, Ninfa Dominguez, Ron Marien, and Ann Voegele. We spent the week talking about serving our families, friends, neighbors, and community. When we serve

anyone we serve Jesus, and share God’s love with the entire world. Here are some of the service projects we did:

♣ We made fleece blankets to donate to those who need warmth.

♣ We collected pencils to send to children in schools in our companion synod of Rwanda.

♣ We wrote letters to missionaries and firefight-ers.

♣ We collected bags of food to give to the Salva-tion Army.

♣ We gathered an offering of $167.67 to send to Lutheran Disaster Relief.

Please check out the bulletin boards by Morton Hall for pictures, and on the St. Paul facebook page for pic-tures and videos from the week. Don’t forget the Church Picnic on July 28th! This is a wonderful opportunity for worship, fellowship, and intergenerational fun. Micke Grove is a great location for all ages. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for this exciting day! Summer is here, but Fall is coming. We are going longer with the summer worship schedule this sum-mer, continuing with one service through Labor Day. This will mean some changes in the usual Fall Sunday School Schedule. The Blessing of the Backpacks will be on August 4 to mark the beginning of the school year. Regular Sunday School won’t start again until after we resume our schedule of 2 Sunday services, but we will be trying a different model for the month of Au-gust so we can start our education year in-line with Lodi Unified. We will be trying a pull-out model of Sunday School. Children will join the congregation in the sanctuary for the beginning of worship and then will head to Morton Hall for a children’s sermon and activities. They will rejoin their families in time for communion. Please come and be a part of this excit-ing model for educational ministry! Rally Day will be September 8th. Please join us for this fun event to kick off our regular education year of Sunday School!

ACG Club will meet on July 19th from 6:00 to 7:30 for a pool party Phil and Karen Honkala are gra-ciously letting us use their pool. Their address is 244 Palomar Dr in Lodi. Parents, if you would like to join us, you are more than welcome, in fact, I can use a couple more adults for the event for safety reasons. Please let me know if you would like to attend! I will send out post cards and a phone tree closer to the event as a reminder. This will be the last meeting for this particular group as in August we will transition to a new set of 3-5 graders. We will miss our outgoing students, but look forward to welcoming a new group of 3rd graders! Remember, friends are always wel-come to join us for Youth Group!

Hello from your Summer Staff at Preschool. Summer school has been lots of fun for the children and the teachers. Different weekly themes have been selected for learning curriculum. Plus, we all attend Chapel on Wednesday in our sanctuary. I have scheduled teachers work hours to reflect classroom ratio. We have been able to combine the 3’s and 4’s, which is working out very well,

allowing some teachers to take vacation/family time off. In June your preschool participated in Vacation Bible School. Five of our teachers became guides and as-sisted in the activities designated by Pastor Sarah’s theme. We also had great fun with the Preschool and Kindergarten children attending VBS. Many, of our previous students attended, plus we spent time with new children scheduled to start in August. We have a strong, positive relationship with our past families and many of the siblings become new students. I espe-cially loved the VBS opening and closing time in the sanctuary. The songs, puppets, and speakers greatly added to our experience. We are starting a new class on August 5, Monday -

Friday, 12 noon to 6pm. Children finishing morning kindergarten classes can join us for pm activities, homework assistance, snack, outside time, and more. Please contact me for detailed information. Our wonderful Preschool, beginning August 5, is close to being full. We are taking names for “waitlist” from several families looking for full time spaces. There are just a few part week places available in both classes. We will have our Orientation on Thursday, July 25, 6pm. At this time we go through our parent handbook, talk about fundraising for the upcoming year, request volunteers for several committees, and socialize with our families. Sincerely, Rita Spohn, Director

Yes, You CAN exercise!!! Exercise is important for good physical and mental health, and can be done no matter what the circumstances. For people with

muscle weakness, the obese, disabled or wheel chair bound; there are still ways of working toward better physical fitness and enjoying the results. Reducing anxiety and stress, weight loss, and an improved sense of physical well being are all potential benefits. Walking is one of the best and cheapest exercises one can do ... but if you cannot walk, or in between walks, do some exercises from your chair. All you need is a chair with good support that allows you to keep knees bent at a 90 degree angle, and a couple of low to me-dium weight dumbbells (2 to 10 pounds depending on your strength). Do these while you watch TV ... keep the dumbbells handy and make it routine. Just re-member to use good posture and breathe.

♣ Leg extensions: Straighten out the leg, with foot flexed. Bend the knee to lower the foot, lightly tapping it on the floor. Repeat 20 times and switch legs.

♣ Arm lifts: With a dumbbell in each hand, hold arms at your sides, elbows slightly bent. Lift arms up to shoulder height with palms facing down. Lower and repeat 16 times.

♣ Overhead press: Hold dumbbells in both hands at ear level, press weights up overhead and lower back down, repeating 16 times.

♣ Rotation for abs: Hold a medium weight dumbbell in front of chest. Contract abs and turn body to the right, (twisting at the waist) keeping legs and hips facing for-ward. Contract abs again to bring the torso (and the weight) back to center, then contract again and rotate to the left. Repeat for 12 reps.

If you can stand up and do more -- or for a change of pace, try a chair squat: Stand in front of the chair with good balance (feet shoulder length apart) and start to sit. As soon as you feel the chair, stand back up, with-out rocking. Place hands on thighs if needed, and re-peat for 12 reps.

Wall push ups: Stand a few feet away from a wall and place hands on it at shoulder level, a few inches wider than the shoulders. Contract abs, keep back straight, bend elbows and lower body towards the wall until elbows are at 90 degree angles. Push back to starting position and repeat. Be sure to keep back straight throughout, using arms to push your weight. Do as many as you can without losing form. To improve balance (and thus help prevent falls), stand on one foot and move the other leg (bent at the knee) through space. Then repeat with the other leg. When you get good at it, try standing on one leg with your eyes closed. The more you practice, the better you will get and a good goal is to try to stand with your eyes closed for 28 seconds which is normal for a 30 year old. Check with your physician if you have any concerns about whether you can or should be doing any exer-cise program. You may not be able to do the recom-mended number of repetitions initially, but don't let that stop you. Do what you comfortably can and watch your improvement. As always, let your body guide you -- go slow at first and work your way up. Go to heavier weights when the exercises become too easy. With just a little effort, you can be stronger, and more fit.

We have a challenge for you! We’d like to see how many places our St. Paul cross travels to. While you are vacationing this summer take your St. Paul camp/shirt with you. As I write this our St. Paul cross is on its way to Paris and the

Swiss Alps. We already know that it has been to New Orleans, how about taking it to college with you and posing in front of your college sign. How many of you will travel to state parks or famous restaurants? It will be so fun to see where the cross has been. Make sure once you have taken a photo to email it to [email protected]. We will post the photos we receive on our St. Paul facebook page and they will also appear in the future newsletters. Make sure you remember to note where the photo was taken and name everyone in the photo as well. So are you up for the challenge?

Social Ministry News Your support for Salvation Army remains constant. The bins in the narthex get filled with food products and are delivered each week by Lee Terra and Ruth Ann and Lee Eichele. Thanks to them for their faith-fulness in delivering and to the congregation for fill-ing the bins every week.

God's Half Acre is going great. It was very successful to have started the table in May for all those early gar-deners. Produce is abundant now and fruits are show-ing up so be sure to check us out every Sunday. Also remember to bring in all the extras from your garden or fruit trees. Anything that is left over is taken to Salvation Army or to Lodi House. The contributions are split between Salvation Army and ELCA Hunger Appeal.

Hope Harbor is requesting donations for their families in crisis. They are needing bikes, bike pumps, bike locks and white towels. Please take them to Hope Harbor.

We are continuing to collect 2" binders that are needed to fill backpacks for children who need assis-tance in getting ready for school this fall. They come 4 to a pack at Costco. Please pick up a set the next time you are doing shopping at Costco. We have a commitment to provide 50 binders.

We are very excited to have a visit from Robin Strick-ler, who is the founder of the Rwanda School Project and the director of the Rwanagana Lutheran School and is an ELCA missionary. She is in the US for just a month and we are privileged to have her stop in at St. Paul. She will be worshiping with us on July 14th. Visit youtube at the link below to see what the school project is all about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbjgohP-v-4

Senior Connection News Our last pot luck in the Hrovat's back yard was a wonderful lunch in a beau-tiful setting. It is always fun to share a meal and get caught up with every-one. We have another pot luck sched-uled for Friday, August 16, in Morton

Hall. The food will be tasty, the air conditioner on and Pr. Mark will be leading a discussion entitled, "Spirituality vs Religion". Hope you can join us. July 3rd, we are inviting the congregation to join us at Hutchins Street Square for the "Celebrate America". Ruth Ann and Lee Eichele are reserving a spot for the St. Paul family, so pack a dinner, bring your family and join us for an evening of enjoyment and celebra-tion. For those of you who get The Lutheran, the June issue has a flyer encouraging congregations to get involved in celebrating the 25th anniversary of the ELCA by joining the other 10,000 congregations for a dedicated day of service. The idea is to work together to clean up a neighborhood, deliver a meal, collect supplies for refugees overseas or visit a neighbor. "GOD'S WORK. OUR HANDS. SUNDAY", Is scheduled for September 8th. We would like to see all the boards get involved in organizing an event to do good works in the community on that day.

Flowers for Worship Please note, the “Flower Calendar” is now hanging in the Narthex. Flowers beautify our Sanctuary and bring smiles to many faces! When you are waiting to shake hands with Pastor Mark or Pastor Sarah, please look at the dates that are still open for placing flowers in worship. If you would like to donate a bouquet or plant, in celebration of a birthday, an anniversary, the birth of a grandchild or in memory of a family member or special friend or “just because”, please find your date on the calendar and sign up. (There are reminder cards next to the calendar, because all of us are busy and forget.) Please do not feel that you must have matching bou-quets or plants, one creates beauty all by itself.. If you would like to use a florist, Belle’s Lodi Flower Shop and the Flower Basket have keys and will deliver your

flowers to church on Saturday. Please feel free to cre-ate your own arrangement or purchase your own flow-ers and bring them to church on Sunday morning. For summer worship, we would appreciate having your flowers in the Sanctuary by 9:00am. If you have a special reason for placing flowers in worship, please call the church office the week before and let Chris know. She will then be able to include it in the bulletin.

COUNCIL UPDATE -

meeting of June 25, 2013

The 2012-13 council met with the 2013-14 council for orientation. Pastor Mark led us in discussion of many aspects of assuring a successful year of council leader-ship. The main tasks of the council are vision, mis-sion, macromanagement and resource acquisition. Each council member will act as a liaison to a board of the church. A retreat is planned with the purposes of relationship building, Bible study and choosing pri-orities for the year. Congregation members are always welcome to attend council meetings and may submit agenda items for discussion. Please bring any comments/suggestions/concerns to any member of the council - President Jim Jordan, Vice President Ray Abinanti; Treasurer Erik Roget; Secretary Jan Flanery; Members at Large - Sharon O'Connell, Rhonelle Pillsbury, Josh Schroe-der, Sharon Seegmiller. submitted by Jan Flanery, Council Secretary

Monica’s Musings Working together to create music

Recently, during worship, we at St Paul celebrated Mother’s Day and Father’s Day by having Men/

Women gather in the Chancel area to sing, Men for Mother’s Day and Women for Father’s Day. It was very successful and I continue to hear good things about how the gestures felt to people on both of those Sundays. Thank you to all who participated in the ‘impromptu choirs’ that made those days special. I am excited by the impromptu choirs because in the bringing together of all men, or all women together a wonderful sound was created, and everyone was will-ing to participate knowing that they would be sur-rounded by lots of people. The amazing thing about choirs is that the quality of the sound doesn’t wholly depend on voices being trained or ‘pretty.’ In college, our best choirs were often full of non-majors with no vocal training, and they were excellent groups. Often times we avoid singing situations where our singular voice might be heard and wish for larger groups so that we can sing more freely and without feeling self-conscious. So, imagine a situation where 40+ people show up for choir practice, knowing that they wouldn’t be the only person singing in their section (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) and that everyone felt excited to sing with so many of their friends in Christ. I’m getting jazzed just thinking about it! Wouldn’t you like to be a part of this? Talk to your friends, or talk to the people who sit around you dur-ing worship and see how many people we can get to sing together when choirs resume in August. Picture it: a large choir, singing confidently together during worship because we all came together to prepare mu-sic for worshipping God. Sounds heavenly, doesn’t it? In Christ, Monica
