BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFULINTERIOR DESIGN SHOULD REFLECT THE OWNER’S LIFESTYLE, WHETHER THEY JET-SET ACROSS THE GLOBE OR WORK FROM HOME. LISA PREECE TALKS TO MORPH DESIGNS TO SEE HOW THEY TURNED ONE CLIENT’S LOVE OF TRAVEL INTO A BRIGHT, BEAUTIFUL DESIGN

Working across properties ranging from country homes to city apartments, offi ces and boutique hotels, Morph Designs has experience in creating stunning designs throughout London and Essex. Head Designer Samantha Morphew set up the consultancy in 2013, after more than 10 years’ experience in the interior design industry, including a degree from Central St Martins University of Art & Design. Morph Designs has the passion, experience and creativity to deliver a perfect home.

Recently, the interior-design consultancy was approached by a professional couple who wanted to bring the luxury of a boutique hotel into their home. After a consultation, it became clear that they wanted their love of travel refl ected in the property, paired with vibrant colours. The result is an interior with a luxurious ethnic vibe and pops of colour.

Armed with bright ideas, the sitting room was turned from a neutral space into a relaxing room with different blocks of colour. Samantha says: “We like to add a colour blocks to a lot of our projects as it gives the client the fl exibility to change it in the future. We chose teal to paint one wall, while the others remained neutral. The other colours in the room match the teal, creating a sense of fl ow throughout the house. The beautiful

combination of the sunshine yellow and midnight blue creates richness. The use of texture through the sequined cushion created the luxuriousness that the client was looking for. The mirror was added as it is reminiscent of Moroccan latticework, bringing in our client’s love of travel.”

The designers were also able to rejuvenatea large room with a beautiful bay window. It was the perfect entertaining space, so they used glamorous accessories with a touch of sparkle. “Our client fell in love with

the silk peacock fabric, so we picked out the colours in the feathers to design the room,” explains Samantha. “This room defi nitely has a hotel vibe to it, with bespoke curtains and a hint of sparkles. Using fabrics such as velvet, silk and sequins really helped us to achieve the hotel boutique appearance, and with a bit of colour popping through the use of blue, it meant the client was extremely happy with the fi nal look.”

In the hallway, Morph Designs gave a sideboard a feminine touch with some bright hues. “It was great fun being able to use pinks and purples in this room, and it shows that you can use these colours without it being too feminine,” says Samantha. “Accessories are really the key to creating a designer look,” Samantha confi des. “Using a fabulous ethnic fabric, we created a bespoke shade and combined it with varying shades of purple and some pink to add depth and character to the room. The curtains created a decadent fi nish, pulling together the colours in the design to create a complete and fun room.”

NEWS

Fine & Country South Africa has celebrated a decade since opening doors in 2006. The brand has now grown to incorporate 50 offices across South Africa and shows no signs of slowing this rapid growth.

Fine & Country was able to launch into South Africa when Linda Erasmus sold her successful Seeff Group franchises and started the Fine & Country brand as CEO. Over the past 10 years, some of the highlights for Fine & Country South Africa have been opening a beautiful head office in Sandton and securing a prime office location in the hotspot of Camps Bay in Cape Town. Linda Erasmus has become a great ambassador for the brand by expanding into neighbouring Zimbabwe, Namibia and West Africa.

To celebrate the milestone, the offices came together to hold their eighth annual conference, with estate agents from across South Africa attending the event and awards ceremony, as well as representatives from offices in Zimbabwe, Namibia and West Africa. “It was fantastic to be able to visit the South African offices on their 10th anniversary. They are really pushing the brand to be as good as it can be and have lots of incredible properties on the market. I wish them well for their next ten years and beyond,” said David Lindley, Managing Director of Fine & Country.

A decade of African excellence

Fine & Country is expanding its urban reach with two new offices in Central London – East London and Canary Wharf – opening their doors.

“Fine & Country has a strong presence throughout the country and we are rapidly expanding in city and town centres. We have launched our City Living department to show that we are serious about growing in urban areas,” says David Lindley, Managing Director of Fine & Country.

The brand will build on a track record of selling premium urban apartments and townhouses, along with the unique country estates that have become their trademark. The new City Living department demonstrates that Fine & Country is the strongest agency to list property with, whether in the Welsh mountains or the bustling streets of East London. “We are thrilled to be the first East London Fine & Country office,” says Adam Tahir, Business Partner at Fine & Country East London. “A few decades ago, a prime residential estate agent with a worldwide reputation would not have thought to open a branch in this part of the city, but the continuing urban regeneration in East London, and a thriving job market, has made this the perfect move for us.”

1 London by Adam Tahir, Fine & CountryEast LondonThere are so many properties available in East London at the moment, and yet the area is still underdeveloped. In the next 12 months, the skyline in this part of the city is going to change dramatically, with the addition of new apartment and offi ce buildings. There is a real cash bubble within the M25, which represents a fantastic opportunity for investors. Even with stamp duty changes coming into effect for second homes, the drop in capital gains tax is likely to off-set the market and I predict sales will remain stable.

2 South West by Lee Hussell,Fine & Country Ilfracombe The market in Ilfracombe has been extremely busy since Christmas, with plenty of ready, willing and able buyers and a number of sales achieved. We have seen an increase of almost 50% in the number of sales agreed between this fi nancial year and last.

WITH SPRING TRULY HERE AND SUMMER ON THE HORIZON, THE HOUSING MARKET IS SET TO ENTER ONE OF THE MOST BUOYANT TIMES OF YEAR. LISA PREECE TALKS TO AGENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRYTO HEAR HOW THE MARKET HAS FARED SO FAR THIS YEAR AND PREDICTIONS FOR SUMMER

New instructions for the fi rst two months of the year were in short supply, but we have seen more properties coming to the market since March. A lot of these new properties are selling quickly, with buyers ready to snap up the best properties.

We have always had a good number of local buyers, but also signifi cant numbers moving into the area as a lifestyle change or for second-home use. We are fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the UK and have fantastic beaches and coastline, as well as Exmoor National Park.

3 North by Sean Zee, Fine & Country LiverpoolThe Liverpool market remains as buoyant as ever. Ongoing investment and development means there is a harmonious combination of both period and modern properties available on the open market. With many excellent state and independent schools throughout the area, Liverpool, Formby and Southport remain popular choices for families. Excellent transport links to London and Manchester also make Liverpool an attractive choice for commuters. Spring has brought an increasing demand for viewings. Evenings are much lighter, and so we are seeing a lot of buyers eager to view properties after they fi nish work.

4 Yorkshire and the Humber by Amy Wiles,Fine & Country Bawtry The property market has sprung into life in the Doncaster and North Nottinghamshire region in 2016, with sales agreed growing from month to month. We fi nd that prices are holding fi rm dueto a lack of supply across the region.

We are also seeing an infl ux of buyers from the South; many are re-locating for business but need to be within commutable distance to London. The train from Retford to Kings Cross St. Pancras can take as little as 1 hour 24 minutes. New motorway links around Doncaster offer speedy access to the A1 and M18, and Robin Hood Airport has fl ights to over 40 destinations around the globe. There is no questioning the pull towards the region as a commuter location. There is also a growing sense of romanticism. with the idea of escaping the big smoke and settling down in the countryside, close to areas of outstanding natural beauty.

5 Mid Wales by Tom Carter,Fine & Country PowysAs one of the happiest places in the UK and with spectacular countryside, Mid Wales has long been a magnet for anyone looking to escape more frenetic parts of the country.

The biggest issue we have is availability of stock. Traditionally, sellers wait until spring before marketing their property, but the numbers actually coming to market are currently low. We have low supply and high demand, which could result in some short term upward pressure on prices.

Work recently began on the long-awaited Newtown bypass, which is set to revolutionise the infrastructure in Mid Wales. For decades, access to this beautiful area has been hampered by traffi c congestion, with vehicles bottle-necking in and around Newtown. The bypass will alleviate this problem and make access to the whole of Powys much easier. The effects of this are likely to boost the local and regional economy.

6 East Midlands by Stephen Binder,Fine & Country Grantham Our current sales divide equally between local buyers trading up to larger properties and out-of-area purchasers from inside the M25. They are attracted to the area due to value for money, excellent local grammar schools, and the commuting possibilities, with Grantham to Kings Cross in only 65 minutes. Lincolnshire is a large county, but this south western quarter is really very accessible and an ideal environment in which to bring up a family.

We’ve had a lively market in 2016 so far, much of it driven by the government announcing an increase in Stamp Duty for second homes. It is usual for at least one transaction in a typical chain tobe affected by this, so many buyers were focused on completing before the end of March.

7 South East by Dominique Scott,Fine & Country Brighton and HoveThe market in Brighton and Hove continues to be strong. Great transport links both by rail and road make it a simple commute to London and Gatwick airport is also extremely convenient. The city centre is historic Regency and Victorian, and the beach, shops,

bars and restaurants, theatres and music scene offer lifestyle and culture for all ages. It’s particularly popular with young families, thanks to the excellent state and public schools. I moved herefrom London just after my twins were born and they are now 14 and thriving.

More developments are springing up across the city, from upmarket blocks with concierges and penthouses to detached luxury new builds with all manner of eco-friendly details. Properties with views continue to be high on the wish list of many, whether it’s a far-reaching cityscape, the serenity of the South Downs, or an ever desirable sea view.

8 South Wales by James Skudder,Fine & Country PembrokeshireIn Pembrokeshire, we see the same changes year on year, as we are a popular holiday home destination. I fi nd that buyers are more likely to want to buy a second home during the summer months, so the market usually picks up at the start of spring. The market is moving quite well with homes worth under £600,000 at the moment and I expect the upper market to improve later in the year. We saw a few buyers looking to complete before the stamp duty deadline, but not a huge number.

A lot of people enjoy holidaying here, and people often move to enjoy a holiday lifestyle or for retirement. For those moving from a big city, there’s a lot more value for money here, as well as a lifestyle where you can keep chickens, go for country walks, and visit the beach.

9 East by Jan von Draczek,Fine and Country King’s Lynn The property market in Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and South Lincolnshire is attractive to a lot of buyers, primarily due to the rail and road links to London. It’s a commutable area, but retains reasonable property prices when compared toNorth Norfolk, Cambridge and Stamford.

Half a million pounds can buy a character house with some land in a rural location, so the lifestyle is affordable. The compromise is that it is outside the Cotswolds. The Fens may not be right for everyone, but it certainly has its charms and it is particularly pleasant in the summer.

Woodstock has beautiful sea views, situated above the Welsh seaside village of Saundersfoot. Price: £1,150,000. Fine & Country Pembrokeshire. Tel: 01834 862138

FOR OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS, BYFORDS IN NORFOLK WAS AN IRONMONGERS. NOW IT’S AN UPMARKET B&B. GILL POWELL DISCOVERS THIS HIGGLEDY-PIGGLEDY HEAVEN

Forget Paris. Springtime should be spent in Norfolk. Ronnie and I fi nd the coastline magnifi cent for bracing walks to clear the cobwebs and skies that go on for eternity. Once replete with refreshing sea breezes, Cromer crab, and strolls on the pier, we head just four miles inland to Holt. It’s possible to travel here from Sheringham on the Poppy line steam train but, with a boot full of souvenirs, we journey by car along hedgerows lined with daffodils.

The word Holt comes from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘wood’, appropriate as we check in at the light, oak-beamed reception. This area of Byfords was originally used as storage for the ironmongers shop owned by Henry Byford and his family for over one hundred years. Large wooden frames display old memorabilia such as invoices and envelopes. The shop was loved by the local community because it sold everything, from a single screw to chicken wire to turnip grinders. However, gunpowder was stored a little too closely to the chimney. According to a Norfolk News cutting from

24 November, 1906, “The gunpowder exploded and it was wonderful that no-one was injured. B Matthews, one of the auxiliary fi remen, had his eyebrows singed and his cap carried high in the air bythe explosion.”

Times are more peaceful now, although there is certainly a buzz of warmth and hospitality around the place. By day, Byfords is a café and store. In fact, every week, a remarkable three thousand pasties are produced on the premises. Part of this enterprising business also includes Sponge – an online cake delivery service. We resist the temptation of a complimentary slice and a cup of tea that is part of the welcome for all guests. Instead, Laura shows us to Room One. Byfords prides itself on the ‘wow’ factor; our room is simply stunning.

Daylight fl oods in through the huge sash window. The space is dominated by a magnifi cent bed with a wooden canopy. At one end, there’s a leather chaise longue. Many items of furniture throughout Byfords are upholstered in leather. The aged, weathered look is charming, but I discover it's actually been tanned by specialists in Norwich. An old fashioned upright telephone, a crystal decanter and a magnifying glass rest on top of an antique bureau and in the exposed brick fi replace, stacked old suitcases provide a place for glossy magazines, alongside a pair of riding boots and a selection of walking sticks. There’s a feel of Norfolk country living. Fresh lilies infuse the luxurious bathroom. Even the signs on the door are thoughtfully produced. No ordinary ‘Please make up the room’ signs. Here, they’re hand embroidered onto the same fabric as the curtains. And, a charming touch, two shortbread heart-shaped biscuits sit invitingly on a vintage plate.

Receptionist Mark is about to go off duty, but he leads me merrily through the labyrinth and I’m grateful for his guidance. Myriad rooms and a green oak conservatory fi ll the space between the main building and the original cottages that surround the external courtyard. “There’s not a nail in it,” Mark says, pointing out the pegs that keep the structure in place. It’s a remarkable feat of

scallops come in a shell, on a bed of caulifl ower puree, topped with a dancing slice of bacon. A thin baguette wedge is loaded with creamy mackerel pate, a tiny wedge of fi sh, and a single caper, with a slither of cucumber on top. It’s a work of art.

As dusk falls, our main courses arrive. Ronnie’s selection of beef is a sight to behold. Glazed short rib and seared steak nestle alongside ravioli brimming with beef shin. The meat rests on the sweetest roasted shallots. Ronnie tucks in, helping himself to a side order of beetroot slaw, and declares the ultimate accolade, “Don’t change your butcher.” It seems Jeary’s just outside Holt, are doing a terrifi c job. My duck is equally as tasty, the slow-cooked leg and seared breast served with Anna potatoes, which are fi ne slices baked similarly to Dauphinoise, but without lashings of cream. The duck meat falls away from the leg, cooked to perfection.

Either we have peaked too early, or the portions are over-generous. I suspect it’s a combination of both. It’s with huge regret that we decline desert, although the selection of puddings and gelato is tempting. When we return to our room, a glass jar containing chocolate chip cookies has been placed on the landing with a sign. “Please help yourself. Goodnight.” Yet another lovely touch. I vow not to tell my dentist.

After a peaceful night’s sleep cocooned in the smoothest bed linen, we venture into the conservatory, where breakfast is beautifully laid out on a huge wooden table. Having noted the menu the night before, I’m pleased to order kedgeree, although I beg for a child’s portion. With chunks of smoked Cley haddock and prawns, it’s creamy and delicious, setting me up for a long return journey.

As we load the car, guests keep returning. Mark is back on dutyand greets one couple like old friends, because that’s what regularsare. They tell him they’re coming again in autumn for theirwedding anniversary.

With heavy hearts, we hand over our room keys. The young receptionist asks if we’re travelling far and I roll my eyes. We’re heading west for over two hundred miles. She smiles and handsover a packet of jelly babies in a Byfords bag. “This should helpyour journey,” she says. What a fabulous fi nal touch.

As we drive away, we take more than sweets and fond memories. Ronnie has been to the deli and bought a selection of pasties, so we’ll have a taste of Byfords tonight, even when we’re home.

architecture. He leads me down steep steps to the cellar, which is believed to date back to the 15th century. Outside, we admire its Norfolk fl int structure and notice the windows that were discovered during the restoration.

While there’s been a settlement here for centuries, the GreatFire of Holt in 1708 destroyed most of the buildings. From tragedy came the re-building of a beautiful Georgian market town. After the ironmongers closed down in the 1970s, the buildingfell into disrepair before re-opening as a tea room. In 2000, current owners Iain and Clair Wilson saw the potential to expand and the fi rst six rooms were ready four years later. There are no 16 rooms in total including three on the ground fl oor as wellas a self-catering loft. I take a peek into a room prepared for a family. On the child’s bed, a green frog soap peeks out from the towel. Byfords is quirky and fun for all ages.

Mark encourages us to explore the town. Gorgeous, independent shops are everywhere and, like Byfords, there are a multitude of nooks and crannies, hidden away. We wander up the numerous different Yards, quaintly named Apple, Feathers and Hopper, for a spot of window shopping before making our way back for dinner.

Our candlelit table in the bay window overlooks Shirehall Plain. An eclectic collection of chairs provides a cosy feel. An older gentleman swaps his seat for a spare one from a table where a family sits. I guess the little girl is staying in the room I saw earlier and wonder if she’s found her frog soap. Both partiesstart chatting; the friendliness of the staff seems to rub off onthe guests. There’s a family feel about the place. It’s high end, but not in a pretentious way.

Unusually, there’s a table of complimentary nibbles, where diners are encouraged to help themselves to artisan bread, olives and a selection of roasted nuts. We select starters from the grazing menu. Two wooden blocks are placed on the table and a platter laden with goodies is balanced on top. The potted duck is served in a tiny kilner jar, crammed full – it’s meaty and delicious. Seared

The primary reason behind the continued success of the tournament is perhaps the host venue. “The Diamond Country Club is one of the best clubs in Austria and is often decorated with the honour of 'Golf Club of the Year' in Austria,” says Heri Hahn of InsideSports. “It is located in a fantastic landscape near the Danube, the biggest river in Austria. Players are always deeply impressed by the view over the whole area, but it's not only the beautiful place, it's also the level of the course. There are a lot of diffi cult holes, where the tournament can be won or lost.” Indeed, it's rare for a player to win the Lyoness Open at Diamond Country Club by more than two strokes, and since 2010, there have been three play-offs, ensuring a dramatic fi nish to a superb tournament.

Throughout the six previous Lyoness Open tournaments, not one player has successfully defended the title they won the previous year. This highlights just how diffi cult this tournament is to win, along with the challenges faced by players in terms of opposition and the course itself. One thing is certain, spectators always receive value for money when attending the Lyoness Open at Diamond Country Club, and there is plenty to look forward to at this year’s event.

“Spectators will be provided with full European Tour standards. The tournament village offers great fun for golfers and non-golfers and presents Austria as the great golf destination it really is. In the VIP Area, guests are provided with all-day hospitality, overlooking the scenic 18th hole of the Diamond Course,” comments Hahn. “Since the front and back nine of the Diamond Course will be switched around again, the Par 3, 18th hole offers the chance

The Lyoness Open, the national open of Austria, has a rich history on the European Tour. A glance down the list of previous winners turns up names such as Bernhard Langer, Paul McGinley and Ronan Rafferty; players who have numerous European Tour winsto their name and in the case of Langer, two Masters titles.

Fast forward to the present day and the Lyoness Open has achieved high status on the European Tour and in world golf. The tournament features in the coveted Race to Dubai and arecent agreement between the European Tour, sponsors Lyoness and promotion company Golf Open Event GmbH will see theevent remain part of the European Tour International schedule until at least 2019.

This year will be the seventh time the Lyoness Open has been staged at Diamond Country Club in Atzenbrugg, Austria. Having fi rst hosted the event in 2010, the Lyoness Open has gone from strength to strength at this tremendous golfi ng venue.

to see all of the fi nal and most important shots of Europe’s elite golfers. Some interesting changes have been made to the course and it will present players with new challenges.”

It's clear Diamond Country Club takes into account both golfers and spectators when preparing the course. Great care goes in to the set-up, not only to offer variety and a challenge for players, but also to provide spectators with the best views possible of Europe's top golfers in action. The tournament village has been subjected to a re-vamp for 2016 and will be set up differently to previous years. There will be entertainment for the whole family, and children can take their fi rst swing of a golf club. Naturally, the golfers are also well looked after, with the majority taking advantage of the lovely, modern suites in the new hotel, located next to the club. The Diamond Club Hotel, which was built last year, boasts 42 luxurious rooms, available for bookings throughout the year. Meanwhile, the Diamond Clubhouse is home to the 2014 Golf Restaurant of the Year, and Gerhard Becher, who is in charge of gastronomic services, is rightly proud of this achievement.

Alex Kleszcz, the Business Development Manager at Diamond Country Club, is delighted with the continued progress and development at the golf club. “We are expanding our practice facilities quickly and building a state-of-the-art academy, with a European Tour Performance Institute, and this is only one of the goals that are set for the future.” David MacLaren, Director of Property & Venue Development for the European Tour, points out further developments at the Diamond Country Club, which not

only includes the European Tour Performance Institute, but also the establishment of a Golf Management Diploma, in conjunction with nearby Krems University.

The Lyoness Open is becoming a bigger and better tournament year after year, and Diamond Country Club is also developing into one of the top venues on the European Tour. The 2012 champion, Bernd Wiesberger, has previously talked about how important the Lyoness Open is, not only for him as an Austrian golfer, but for all the Austrian players who work hard on the European Tour. The progress being made at Diamond Country Club will serve both the golfers and the spectators well, many of whom will want to get on the golf course themselves, having seen the tournament set-up.

The Lyoness Open is the perfect blend of a fantastic, challenging European Tour golf course, coupled with a great off-the-course experience, for players and spectators alike. Diamond Country Club is currently the only European Tour Destination in Austriaand certainly made an impression on multiple European Tour and Ryder Cup winner, Miguel Angel Jiménez. The Spaniard worked with the club to redesign the 8th hole on the Diamond Course, and has since become a partner of the club.

Why not walk in the footsteps of the great Jiménez and thelikes of Bernhard Langer and Paul McGinley this year, by makinga date with the Lyoness Open at Diamond Country Club fromJune 9th – 12th? There's no better place to spend a relaxing weekend – in the company of Europe's fi nest golfers.

A HOME WITH THIS MUCH POTENTIAL DESERVES TO BE SEEN. LISA PREECE VIEWSA FAMILY HOME THAT IS STUNNING BOTHINSIDE AND OUT

AND CITYBETWEEN COUNTRY

Cambridge has been hailed as one of the property hotspots of the past year, with house prices rising rapidly and real estate fl ying off the market. Buyers needed to act fast to fend off competition, as it seems everyone wants to own a slice of this thriving city. With fast trains to London King’s Cross every half hour, the transport connections are good. But residents don’t feel the need to head to the Capital for entertainment. They have the beautiful Cam River to punt along in summer, regular free lectures at Cambridge University, and a host of independent events across the city. The job market is booming, too – especially in the science and technology sectors.

Property in the city centre is hard to come by, but this is simply leading buyers to Cambridge’s surrounding villages. The villages offer all of the perks of a relaxed lifestyle, with larger properties.

The village of Hundon is one popular spot, with a country pub and the 13th-century All Saints Church, together with a primary school and village shop. It stands about three and a half miles north of the historic town of Clare, which provides a good range of additional amenities, including a doctor’s surgery, post offi ce, chemist, golf course and a variety of shops and public houses. Cambridge is23 miles away, a pleasant morning commute by car, or even bybike in the warmer months.

Owls Hall is a beautiful barn conversion situated on the outskirts of Hundon. With fi ve to six bedrooms, two self-contained one-

bedroom apartments, nearly one and a half acres, three stablesand a tack room, this property features plenty of space. The fl exible accommodation offers not only a lovely family home, but also room for an extended family, a home business, or holiday lets.

Twelve years ago, the current owners were attracted to the property for its fl exible layout and the workshop, which provided an ideal artist's studio for their interior design and mural-painting business. They also loved the quiet countryside setting of the house in rural Suffolk, yet within easy reach of the A14, the A11and the M11.

Additionally the property provides opportunities for equestrian enthusiasts, as not only does the house come with stables, but there are also three acres of paddock available for purchase by separate negotiation.

Perhaps one of the most stunning features of the house is just through the front door. The reception hall is a vast and inviting space, with full-height glazed windows, a wood-burning stove, and a lovely vaulted ceiling. This area sets the scene for the wow factor, which continues throughout the property.

The galleried landing is the perfect spot to sit and relax in, while enjoying views through the large windows across the grounds and neighbouring farmland. The kitchen, on the other hand, is the hub of this home and it makes an exceptional entertaining space. The

room is L-shaped, with kitchen and dining spaces blended to give a social feel. A range of irregularly shaped wall and base units meet stainless steel work surfaces, creating a stylishly contemporary design.

If you’re looking for a stunning home, with extensive space both within the house and in the grounds, then Owls Hall could be for you. With the popular city of Cambridge a short drive away, it may just be the perfect rural family home.

DINNER PARTIES ARE A DELIGHTFUL WAY TO SPEND AN EVENING, BUT HOW CAN YOU FIND THE TIME? LA BELLE ASSIETTE IS THE ANSWER. GISELLE WHITEAKER BOOKS A PRIVATE CHEF

My six dinner-party guests are due to start trickling in within half an hour, but instead of racing around the kitchen, cheeks fl ushed, trying not to burn anything, I’m applying the fi nal touches to my makeup. Delicious aromas are permeating my apartment and the table is set for a three-course feast. It looks like I’m the most effi cient host ever, but the reality is, I have help.

Chef Cesar Fernandez is making magic in my kitchen. He’s done all of the hard yards of preparation, too, from preparing the menu to purchasing the ingredients and assembling them into what promise to be fabulous dishes. He called me yesterday and we went over the menu, confi rming each dish, along with a meat-free option for my vegetarian guest. I couldn’t have done it without him.

Chef Cesar is one of a new brand of chefs who are gaining experience in the restaurant trade and then branching out into other things. And these chefs all have one thing in common: they are on the books of La Belle Assiette. La Belle Assiette, which literally translates to ‘the

beautiful plate’, is a private chef service company with 250 carefully selected chefs on the register. Each of the chefs is required to prepare a validation dinner before they can join the ranks, to ensure their service level, menus and dishes pass the taste test before a gourmet panel. Once verified, they can be booked for home dinner parties – at a surprisingly reasonable price.

Some of the chefs will be familiar. Many have graduated from the best cooking schools and have worked in top restaurants around the world. A number have appeared on Masterchef. Chef Cesar hails from Spain, but he trained as a chef at Leiths cooking school and gained experience in restaurants like The Glasshouse and Arbutus Straight. He was the head chef at Divertimenti in Marylebone and worked for a catering company that cooked for the Queen at the Jubilee. Currently, he divides his time between working as a private chef and doing cookery demonstrations and recipe development.

Right now, Cesar is capably whizzing around my kitchen, leaving me free to open a bottle of wine and greet my guests, two of whom are running late. “It’s no problem,” Cesar says, completely unfazed. “Just let me know when you’re ready and I’ll dish up.”

When my directionally challenged stragglers arrive, we take a seat at the table and Chef Cesar delivers our starter, grilled asparagus and girolles with wild garlic and truffle oil on sourdough toast. The vibrant green of the asparagus is interspersed with the honey-coloured mushrooms and both pack a flavour punch, the truffle oil elevating the dish from delicious to sublime.

The main course is equally as impressive. Slices of delicately pink duck breast are framed by thinly sliced fennel, bacon and roasted carrot, with a generous dollop of carrot puree. Our vegetarian is delighted with her golden caramelised onion tart, served with mounded cubes of roasted vegetables and the same puree. The conversation stops with the first bite, each guest consumed with the act of eating.

For more information on La Belle Assiette, or to book a private chef, see www.labelleassiette.co.uk.

The grand finale is a chocolate and cherry ganache, served with pistachio crumbs and macerated cherries. The smooth ganache slides down easily, the perfect dénouement for the meal.

“There are leftovers in the fridge,” says Cesar, when I step into the kitchen for the first time all night. The room is sparkling, the dishwasher packed, benches wiped and floor mopped. All that’s left for me to do is to add our wine glasses to the dishwasher and press start.

A private chef no longer seems like an indulgence. Rather, it is the path to the perfect dinner party, freeing the host to enjoy the evening. With hundreds of chefs, and even more menus to choose from at La Belle Assiette, it can also turn an everyday dinner into a culinary adventure. The only question will be who to book next?
