The Oxford Update

Empire in RetreatThe Story of India’s PartitionRabia Umar AliThe Indian subcontinent of 1947 became the burial place of the British Raj. The struggle for freedom and independence had culminated in the creation of two new and sovereign states, India and Pakistan. But the dawn of liberty brought with it a human tragedy of colossal magnitude. The hastiness with which the Partition plan was put together, the unpardonable rush in which a land of millions was dissected, the hurried British departure from India, and the injudicious distribution of the goods, resources and assets of the subcontinent all contributed to a huge disaster. This book aims to highlight the flaws in the making of Partition and the attempts and intentions of the British to draw boundaries at their impulse and whims, and not in keeping with the demands and wishes of the people.

Rabia Umar Ali is Assistant Professor, History Department, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.

Escape from Oblivion The Story of a Pakistani Prisoner of War in IndiaIkram SehgalIkram Sehgal, a Pakistan Army officer, became a Prisoner of War (POW) in India after being handed over to the Indian Army following the 1971 rebellion in the then East Pakistan. A hundred or so POWs remained undeclared by India throughout 1971. Kept in solitary confinement, Sehgal escaped on the hundredth day of captivity, becoming the first ever Pakistan Army officer to successfully escape from an Indian POW Camp. Compiled from the original notes jotted down by the author during the period of his de-briefing on return to Pakistan, this fascinating book provides an insider’s account of conditions under Indian custody. It is a gripping tale of individual courage, of disparate friendships made in adverse circumstances, and of the will to survive.

Ikram Sehgal is currently Chairman, Pathfinder Group Pakistan. He is a regular contributor of articles in newspapers and also appears on current affairs programmes on television in his capacity as a ‘defence and security analyst’.

From Micro-finance to the Building of LocalInstitutionsThe Origins and Evolution of the Micro-credit Programme of the OPP’s Orangi Charitable Trust, Karachi, PakistanArif Hasan and Mansoor RazaThe objective of the Orangi Pilot Project (OPP), established in 1980, was to build models of participatory development that could overcome the problems faced by conventional development programmes in dealing with informal settlements and poverty related issues. As a part of the Project, a Micro-credit programme—the first of its kind in Pakistan—also slowly evolved. Although this programme was originally limited to Orangi, through the OPP’s Charitable Trust (OCT), it soon moved to supporting NGOs and CBOs in the rural and urban areas of Pakistan in the operation of their own micro-credit programmes. This book describes the evolution of the OCT programme, its current vision, unconventional methodology, the leadership of the OCT partners, and issues related to the programme’s management and sustainability.

Arif Hasan is an architect and planner dealing with urban planning and development issues, particularly those concerning Asia and Pakistan.

Mansoor Raza is currently Deputy Director, Advocacy and Research, for the Church World Service Pakistan/Afghanistan.

Perspectives on Mughal IndiaRulers, Historians, ‘Ulama’ and SufisSajida Sultana AlviThis collection aims to demonstrate that rigorous analysis of historical texts should lead to a better understanding of socio-political developments in their respective historical and cultural contexts. Beginning with an overview of the expansion of Islam in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent, the book undertakes a historiographical critique of primary texts of Mughal history. It then turns to the art of governance as studied through historical works and didactic literature, including Islamic ‘Mirrors for Princes.’ It introduces the reader to the spiritual life of the Naqshbandi Sufis and provides glimpses of their lives. Against the backdrop of political crises and social disorder during the later period of Mughal rule, the book describes the role of the Naqshbandi Sufis and ‘Ulama’ in spearheading the revitalization of the practices of Islam. Over a hundred years later, as the Mughal Empire declined, sectarian squabbles between Shi’is and Sunnis are succinctly captured in an analysis of the discourses of Naqshbandi Sufis and Sunni ‘Ulama’.

Sajida Sultana Alvi is Professor Emeritus of Indo-Islamic History and former Chair of Urdu Language and Culture at the Institute of Islamic Studies, McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

The Unfinished Memoirs Sheikh Mujibur Rahman

Translated by Fakrul AlamThese memoirs are based on four notebooks by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh and the centre of the cause célèbre of the 1970s, written while he was a state prisoner in 1967. The book records Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s opinions about political developments in East Bengal/East Pakistan. It contains considerable material about the turbulent political conditions in which the Awami League and the United Front were formed, routing the Muslim League in the elections to the East Bengal Assembly in 1954. The author has made observations about several prominent leaders of the time, including Jinnah, Liaquat Ali Khan, Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy, A.K. Fazlul Haq, Maulana Bhashani, Khawaja Nazimuddin, Mohammad Ali Bogra, Chaudhury Muhammad Ali, and Nurul Amin. These candidly written memoirs help explain the genesis of Bengali Muslim nationalism.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a Bengali nationalist politician and the founder of Bangladesh.

Dr Fakrul Alam is Professor of English at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh.

The Class Structure of PakistanTaimur RahmanThis work on the class structure of Pakistan is based on the framework of historical materialism. It is an important work, since in recent times class analyses have been largely neglected in works on South Asia, particularly on Pakistan. This study therefore fills a gap in our knowledge. Sketching the history of the region that is now Pakistan, it analyzes the class structure from the time of the Mughal Empire, through the distortions of the colonial era and the transition to capitalism, to the class structure of contemporary Pakistan. It avoids over-schematic arguments, attempting to proceed from facts rather than from any ideal forms. The author concludes that the class structure of Pakistan is characterized by Asiatic capitalism, with the non-agricultural sector of the economy dominated by petty commodity production and small-scale capitalism. This has implications for the country’s politics, society, and culture.

Dr Taimur Rahman teaches Political Science at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).

A Stranger in My Own CountryEast Pakistan, 1969–1971Major General (Retd) Khadim Hussain RajaThe 1971 East Pakistan tragedy was not just a failure of the military but also a collapse of civil society in the West Wing. The few voices raised against the military action were too feeble to make the army change its course, a course leading to military defeat and the break-up of the country. At the time, the author was General Officer Commanding 14 Division in East Pakistan. Apart from his direct narration of the events, his portrayal of the major dramatis personae, such as Field Marshal Mohammad Ayub Khan, General Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan, Lieutenant General Tikka Khan and Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi, are insightful. A necessary text that demands scrutiny from all interested in the course of Pakistan’s history.

Khadim Hussain Raja joined the British Indian Army in 1942 and opted for a career in the Pakistan Army after Independence in 1947. He served on the faculty of Command and Staff College, Quetta, twice. He also served as Director General Artillery at the GHQ.

The Unconquered PeopleThe Liberation Journey of an Oppressed CasteJohn O’BrienThis book explores the history, ethnography and liberation journey of an aboriginal, forest-dwelling hunting tribe, which was reduced to servitude by the Aryan conquest of the Indian subcontinent. They were called Chandala in classical Brahmanic literature and are designated as Chuhra in the censuses of India. In contemporary Pakistan, they are known as Punjabi Christians. The book explores their primarily tribal rather than occupational nature, their homeland, and their spread through the Indian subcontinent. It traces how the construction of their religiously-endorsed inequality and degradation came about. The book also covers their rites of passage, eclectic structure, mental universe, and the evolution of their religious sensibilities. The movement to Christianity of the Chuhras was the defining moment in the creation of a new social identity.

John O’Brien has lectured widely on Religious Studies and conducted workshops in several countries in Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America.

The Illustrated Beloved CityWritings on LahoreEdited by Bapsi SidhwaFrom ancient times, through the days of the storied Mughal empire, down to the present times, Lahore has inspired artists, musicians and writers. The city is also celebrated as one of the major centres of fine art in the Subcontinent and especially in Pakistan. It is this aspect of the city’s cultural tradition that inspired this illustrated edition of the Beloved City—decorated with the works of a few of the many great painters who made Lahore their home or were inspired by it. Thus, this anthology brings togetther verse and prose: essays, stories, chronicles and profiles by people who have shared a relationship with Lahore alongside images by similarly inspired artists. A sumptuous collection, this book is a reflection of the city it celebrates.

Bapsi Sidhwa is the author of four novels, The Crow Eaters, The Bride, Ice-Candy-Man, and An American Brat, all of which have been translated into several languages. She is also the recipient of several national and international awards including the Sitara-i-Imtiaz.

The Philosophical Works of al-KindiPeter Adamson and Peter E. Pormann

Series Editor: S. Nomanul HaqThis volume presents the philosophical writings of al-Kindi, acknowledged as the first philosopher of the Arabic tradition. Al-Kindi helped usher the ideas of Greek thinkers and scientists into the vibrant context of the Islamic culture of his day. Drawing on this Hellenic heritage, he wrote on a wide range of philosophical and scientific topics including metaphysics, theology, psychology, cosmology, ethics, and medicine. In these works, al-Kindi set out pioneering ideas about the relation of philosophy to religion, the oneness and providence of God, the nature of the human soul, the structure of the cosmos, and the eternity of the world. This book makes the whole of al-Kindi’s philosophical corpus available in English, most of them for the first time. The translations are based largely on Arabic original texts.

Peter Adamson is Professor of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy at King’s College, London, UK.

Peter E. Pormann is Professor of Classics and Graeco-Arabic Studies at the University of Manchester, UK.

Syed Nomanul Haq is currently a senior member of the faculty in the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law at the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS).
