Welcome to Issue 17 of The Oval Zone.
Almost the end of the fi rst month and some of the leagues are starting to show us defi nite splits in those likely to be push-ing for promotion and those who appear to have a long season ahead if they don’t start picking up a few points. It’s one of the reasons we love this game, so unpredictable. At the end of next month, I’ll probably be reporting that the situation’s completely changed.
You will see that this week is a reduced edition (time ran away with me) and in the next couple of editions we intend to get to grips with all the results received so far and ask for your help in checking them out.

RGC 12 v Cardiff Met 26
The new RGC Supporters’ Club website is launched
The New RGC Supporters Club Web-site is now up and running, and is the place to go to discuss all things RGC.
If you are looking for an RGC Forum then this is the place to go.

Students too good for North Walians as Horsman’s men slip to second home loss
RGC were taught a tough lesson by Cardiff Met at Parc Eirias on Satur-day as their tough baptism to life in the Championship continued.
Despite last weeks victory at Narberth, RGC went into Saturday’s contest as underdogs against a side who have claimed a bonus point win in their opening two encounters and were sitting on top of the early standings.
With the sun out both teams wanted to run the ball with pace and ur-gency from the start, and while the opening fi ve minutes were spent in the Cardiff Met half the danger signs were all too clear when the visitors broke away down the wing with their fi rst attack.
The pressure soon switched onto the RGC defence and the opening try came after a tap penalty from Cardiff as they passed the ball wide for James Beal to touch down.
RGC began to regain a foothold in the game with scrum-half Josh Leach going over the gain line and bring the Gogs backs into the play. The tempo of the game began to slow as the heat took its toll on both sets of players after an exhilarating opening 20 minutes.
RGC kept the ball, went through the phases with Leach, Rhodri Carlton-Jones and Harri Evans linking up for sub Huw Grundy to collect a pass and race over for a try.
RGC were struggling to build a platform from the lineout on a number of occasions which added to the frustration in the half.
The ball and territory was back in the Gogs favour with RGC looking for their second score, and the chance came for Tom Blackwell but he couldn’t keep hold of the ball with the try line in sight. It was a harsh les-son in Championship rugby as Cardiff Met got a try minutes later after a couple of breaks through defence with Garyn Smith scoring, Cooke adding the extras, and the all important third try came before half time
after quick feet from scrum-half Baird passing to Cooke who scored and converted.
RGC needed a score early in the second half but it was the visitors ran in under the posts with Baird scoring with an individual run to stretch the lead and gain the bonus point.
From that point on RGC did step it up in regards to keeping the ball and trying to get over the gain line as they spread the ball about making inroads towards the visitor’s line. At one point they when through 20 phases with Bryn Williams, Kelvin Davies and Carlton-Jones all being held up on the line which showed the well drilled defence of Cardiff Met.
Huw Grundy also went close to his second try after a kick from Carlton-Jones bounced into his hands but was pounced on from the Cardiff backs. Harri Evans also had a go with some quick feet and power but once again the line couldn’t be crossed.
If the line out proved disappointing then the highlight from a Gogs perspective had to be the scrum in the second half, with debutant prop Thabiso Mgomezuw looking impressive. It was the power of the pack that led to a penalty try after Cardiff were penalised after three scrums on the away teams line with Carlton-Jones converting.
As the whistle went the RGC crowd knew that even though their team was beaten it was down to some clinical fi nishing for the visitors and a below par RGC performance which defi nitely can be improved on.
Head coach Chris Horsman was honest in his appraisal of the teams display, saying: “It was disappointing, but credit to Cardiff Met who took their chances well.
“We had four or fi ve gilt edged chances to score and we didn’t take them. We weren’t accurate in places but I think the second half once again showed a better RGC in regards to a performance.”

WEAR YOUR RGC COLOURS WITH PRIDE
Perspective in PerformancesAs we are three games into the season and have come up against
two teams that will be near the top of the Championship at the end
of the campaign I thought it would be a good time to take stock of
where RGC are as a club.
To some, last season seems like an age ago but it is important to
remember at this time last year we had only played three league
games in our history. That said we can’t really even now call our-
selves “established” with our record of playing competitive league
and cup games standing at 26!!
Talking of numbers we are a young in a history sense but also in
squad age with some stats from our game versus Ebbw Vale – 9
teenagers, 8 Academy Graduates and only 3 players 25 or over!
While we all want to watch us win at Fortress Eirias, the place
where we remained unbeaten all last season, the step up in
league has given us tough openers and as far as teams with his-
tory it doesn’t get much wider between us and our next visitors
Pontypool.
Of course it is not just the players that are on a learning curve but
us supporters as well. Many would not have seen RGC defeated
until this past month and we have to give ourselves a reality check
that unlike last season we aren’t going to win games with the same
margins as we did in Division 1 East.
It is important that we as supporters take a step back and look at
the bigger picture, and if someone asked you at the start of last
season “Would you like to watch us play Pontypool in the Champi-
onship at Eirias in September 2013” you would have snapped their
hand off!!!!
So as we watch the players run out next time, we should look back
and see how far we have come and look forward to how far we
can go as the journey continues.

WRU Wednesday league kicked off this week with Llandrillo fl ying the fl ag for North WalesThe WRU Wednesday Under 18 league returned this week with 11 teams hoping to emulate the suc-cess of last year’s winners Coleg Sir Gar.
This year’s tournament sees Cowbridge Comprehensive School, Newport High School and Llandrillo College joining the tournament for the fi rst time, with the inclusion of the schools meaning a name change from the WRU Colleges League to the WRU Wednesday Under 18 League.
With WRU broadcast partner S4C again on board, the tournament continues to grow year on year. The Welsh language broadcaster has committed to showing one live match per round on s4c.co.uk and is launching a new television programme, Rygbi Pawb which will show extended highlights of the live games plus highlights of other league games and Principality Pre-miership highlights and features. The new Under 18 league kicks off this Wednesday with newcomers Newport High School taking on Bridgend College at the Brewery Field. The match can be watched live via s4c.co.uk/rygbi.
WRU national performance man-ager Gethin Watts said: “The WRU Wednesday Under 18 league is an exciting competition which is grow-ing year on year.
“We’re delighted to welcome Newport High School, Cowbridge Comprehensive and Llandrillo College into the tournament this year. All three have demonstrated a desire to join the league and im-prove their standards with Llandrillo also ensuring representation from north Wales.
“An 11-team tournament not only increases competition but drives up the standards of the other teams. That’s what this league is all about, creating an environment and op-portunity for the best young players in Wales to be able to play at the highest possible level.”
S4C’s Director of Content, Dafydd Rhys said: “On S4C we pride ourselves on the depth of sporting coverage we offer, and this new programme will supplement the
higher profi le competitions which we associate with today’s profes-sional era.
“There is a great amount of support and interest out there in the players who are coming through the ranks and who could be the next big name to appear at regional or even national level. Our Principality Pre-miership and Under 18 competition are where that emerging talent often appears fi rst. We’re really looking forward to seeing all that action in one place on S4C.”
WRU Group Chief Executive, Roger Lewis, added: “We con-gratulate S4C for deciding to open this broadcast window to such an exciting and vibrant level of Welsh rugby which shows viewers the true extent of young talent we have moving along our pathway structures.
“Schools and colleges are so important to the future of our game and by webcasting live games and broadcasting a wide range of weekly highlights, S4C is helping us build interest and increase all important participation.
“I know how hard the teams and coaches are working to ensure that what the viewers get to see is a highly skilled and competitive brand of rugby which all our fans will enjoy.”
Ahead of their fi rst season in the competition, Dai Flanagan, Director of Rugby at Newport High School, is looking forward to seeing how his side fare.
“It’s an exciting league. We watched it last year and wanted to get into it,” he said.
“The school have worked really hard and now it’s a chance to prove we can compete in the league. There aren’t going to be any easy games. Every school in this league prioritises rugby so it’s a big oppor-tunity for our players to develop.”
Gareth Nicholas, Director of Rugby at Bridgend College, said: “It’s a great event. The backing this league is receiving is fantastic - it’s very exciting.
“The diversity of the new teams coming in means we’re bringing the standard up which is always good for Welsh rugby. If you look at the groups, I think they’re all tough groups. None of the teams are going to be pushovers and there was very little between the sides last year.
“That’s good for the competition and the development of the teams.”
The Wednesday Under 18 league sees 11 teams compete in two groups of four and one of three. The top two teams from each group then progress to stage two with play-off matches to follow.
The rest of the teams also compete in stage two but in a different pool.
Josh Leach, Director of Rugby at Llandrillo College, is hoping his side can compete at the top of group two. They face Coleg Gwent, Llandovery College and Cowbridge Comprehensive in the fi rst round of fi xtures.
“We’re looking to step things up as a college and our aim to start with has to be to top the group stage,” said Leach.
“We want to be playing at the best standard possible throughout the year and the great thing about this competition is that the players and teams will test each other.”
Matt Silva, Director of Rugby at Cowbridge Comprehensive, added: “A lot of work has gone in over the past three or four months, the boys have been training four times a week through the summer and we’ve played two friendly games.
“Things are going really well and the boys are coming to school with smiles on their faces, they’re really enjoying it.”
Cowbridge captain Dan Holder said: “The boys are really excited. Playing against the best rugby boys in the country brings you on as a player.”

WRU invests a record £22m in to Welsh rugbyThe Welsh Rugby Union Limit-ed (“WRU”) this week published its Annual Report which shows it invested a record £22.1m into Welsh Rugby in the last fi nancial year.
The WRU closed the year with its overall turnover remaining above £60m for the second fi nancial period in succession.Figures in the Annual Report for the year ended 30 June 2013 show that the WRU allocated £4.0m into the community game throughout Wales which was up from a fi gure of £3.8m in the previous year.
The sum spent on the costs of elite rugby went up 2% to a fi gure of £4.2m which primarily represents the sum for manag-ing the National Centre of Ex-cellence, the age-grade struc-tures and the National Sevens squad. Included within the £22.1m are one-off investments of £1.3m into the community game, mainly through facilities grants, and £1.0m made avail-able to the four Regions to fund player recruitment, retention and development.
The overall spending and re-in-vestment levels were achieved in a year which the Group Chief Executive had forecast, in last year’s Annual Report , would be fi nancially tougher than 2012.By the close of the fi nancial year 2013, the WRU Group achieved a turnover of £61.0m
which was down from £63.2m the year before, however earn-ings and allocations were up.
The net repayable bank debt of the WRU also remained below £20m at £19.5m and remains on target to be cleared by 2021.
There were also signifi cant executive changes announced during the year with World Cup winner Josh Lewsey joining as Head of Rugby and Lieutenant Colonel Mark Williams as Mil-lennium Stadium Manager.
The fi nancial success of the past year was driven by power-ful international performances on the fi eld including the fourth RBS 6 Nations title in nine years, which included three Grand Slams.
Although the WRU’s perform-ance is cyclical and dependant on set sporting and major event schedules, its Group Chief Executive described the overall performance in the year as remarkable.
HIGHLIGHTS
Highlights of the last fi nancial year include:-
A turnover of £61.0m
A record EBITDA (Earnings before interest, tax, deprecia-tion and allocations) of £29.1m up from £27.6m in 2012
£16.9m distributed to the four Regions from ERC and Rabo-Direct tournament income plus c£6.4m directly from the WRU

A record £22.1m allocation to affi liated organisations
A record re-investment of £4.0m into the community game
Net repayable bank debt re-mained below £20m at £19.5m keeping the WRU on target to be debt free by 2021.
The fi nancial success during the year was consolidated with the announcement of a major new media rights agreement with the BBC which secures the broadcast of Wales’ Autumn international series games on network television until 2018.
The strong fi nancial perform-ance during 2012 and into 2013 helped the WRU deliver on its core commercial and operation-al priorities in a range of areas.
The WRU was able to focus on developing schools rugby with a highlight being the launch of its WRU Schools Accredita-tion Scheme recognising their involvement in the game.An arrangement with S4C en-sured U18 schools and colleges rugby featured on television in Wales with the programming continuing into the year ahead.
A WRU Club Operations Team was established to focus on the community level of the game and a WRU Club Funding Tool was launched online to help source fi nancial help.A pro bono legal scheme of-fering free advice to clubs by law students at Cardiff Univer-sity was also put in place with back up support from the Hugh James law fi rm and Civitas bar-risters’ chambers.
Much of the effort and focus on the community game was driven throughout the year by the results of the WRU Club Census which identifi ed the needs and priorities for the WRU’s member clubs.
The level of income and re-investment achieved during a year signposted by challenging fi nancial conditions in the wider UK economy was again under-pinned by acclaimed successes on the fi eld of play.
Amongst these rugby highlight were:-
An RBS 6 Nations Champion-ship title
A record Six Nations win against England by 30 points to 3.
16 players and 7 backroom staff selected for the British and Irish Lions with key Welsh involvement in the Lions series victory
A Junior World Championship fi nal place for Wales U20 in-cluding a historic U20 win over South Africa
Wales Sevens reaching the fi nal of the Hong Kong leg of the IRB World Series
Wales Sevens reaching the knock out stage of the IRB Sevens Rugby World Cup
A total of 100 Welsh qualifi ed players playing international rugby at some level during the month of June 2013
Against this backdrop of rugby achievements the WRU was also informed that eight Rugby World Cup 2015 international games including two quarter fi nals will take place at the Mil-lennium Stadium.
During the year the Stadium also hosted 11 international football games during the Lon-don Olympics 2012.
The Stadium continued to be a major events location - during the year, the Stadium hosted the 2013 Speedway Grand Prix and a concert by Rihanna.
A keynote rugby event during the year was Judgement Day when the Stadium played host to matches between all four of the Welsh Regions for the fi rst time at the same venue on the same day.
A National Sevens tournament was launched during the year and behind the scenes the gov-erning body launched a review of its own governance headed by the distinguished High Court judge Sir Robert Owen.
There was reform within the community league structures and RGC, the north Wales team, successfully completed its fi rst season as a repre-sentative league team winning promotion to the Championship Division
The WRU kept its focus on investment to underpin all de-velopments and a cryotherapy chamber and high altitude training facility were installed at the WRU National Centre of Excellence.
At Regional level there was a continuation of work to improve operational infrastructure with the Regions and the WRU establishing a new Professional Regional Game Board under the independent and non-vot-ing chairmanship of Sir Wyn Williams.
The confi dence expressed with-in the Group also encouraged the WRU to consider bidding to host the Rugby World Cup Sevens competition in 2018.
The WRU Group Chief Ex-ecutive Roger Lewis said: “The results we publish today stand as clear confi rmation that our business is now set on fi rm foundations and we are able to operate successfully even in challenging economic times.
“This displays a direct link with the key changes we have put in place since 2006 with radical reforms of our fi nancial and op-erational practices plus a robust recruitment policy.
“It costs money to fund radical
change and nurture develop-ment so I am delighted that we have again been able to deliver meaningful and record levels of fi nancial support within our priority areas of elite rugby, the community game and the Mil-lennium Stadium.
“It is also a tribute to our suc-cess and our reputation that we are able to attract key execu-tive staff of the calibre of Josh Lewsey as Head of Rugby and Mark Williams to become Mil-lennium Stadium Manager to join our outstanding Executive Board.
“Soon we will welcome the Rugby League World Cup opening ceremony and match-es to the Stadium and we are already beginning to plan for the Rugby World Cup games we will host in 2015. These are great times for Wales and we are delighted to be playing our part in making this a great na-tion to be part of.
The WRU Group Finance Director, Steve Phillips, said: “We entered the fi nancial year knowing the economic pros-pects were challenging so I am delighted at the way we have been able to perform.
“We are now at a stage in our corporate development where we can make decisions based on a real and signifi cant under-standing of how our business model works. We know how to manage the challenges and retain the confi dence to make radical decisions on our opera-tional and investment targets.”

Caernarfon ladies were to be congratulated on their wonderful team spirit as they re-grouped to claim a deserved victory at Crumlin following being reduced to fourteen players within the fi rst few minutes.
1 day ago | Gary Williams Comment 0 Share 0 Tweet 0 Flanker, Leoni Webster, on her promising debut, had sadly to leave the fi eld with a shoulder injury soon following the fi rst whistle. The high penalty count resulted in Caernarfon being pegged back in their own half, one harshly for a not using good turnover ball within the allotted fi ve seconds. From the chosen scrumage, Rebecca Chivers at number eight picked up and disposed of would be tacklers to crash over beneath the posts. Emily James added the conversion to give the home side a seven-point advan-tage.
At this point Caernarfon were fi nding it diffi cult to adjust to the quick think-ing of their opponents and were made to concentrate on defensive duties for a good twenty minutes. Eventually, after Lauren Hassett had sprinted clear into the home twenty-two things began to change. A fi red seven lady Cofi pack began to dominate the set piece and lineout. A forward rush and feed saw Sera Bailey held up within inches of the try line but prop Emma
Edwards took the released ball at pace to bulldoze her way to the line and record her fi rst try in Caernarfon colours. Bailey brushed herself down to slot the conversion and tie the score.
This newfound belief led to the Cofi s upping their game to prevent the home side from gaining any forward momentum. Such chasing soon paid dividends with the toe of Bailey nudging the loose ball through and then winning the chase to ground out wide. The half closed with Caernarfon twelve points to seven to the good.
Blaenau Gwents initial onslaught at the beginning of the second half was dealt with comfortably with a text book Caryl Hughes tackle nullifying the threat. Caernarfon’s ball retention was improving constantly and after deciding to run a kickable penalty, Rhian Gwawr took good second phase ball, drew the cover and freed stand off Bailey to score her second of the day, an effort she duly converted.
Brea Leung and Rhian Gwawr had similar charges deemed to have been held up over the try line but the pressure was mounting on the home side. Ironically it was a mix up between stand off and scrum half that paved the way for the bonus point try that came to lively scrum half Jess Kavanagh as the fumbled link between them proved a blessing as she sprinted all of thirty meters to put the fi nal score beyond doubt. Bailey again converted and try as they may, with Christie Thompson prominent, Blaenau Gwent failed to trouble the Cofi s further although the fi nal whistle sounded with another failed grounding that their effort had richly deserved.
The Cofi s will host Gwernyfed on the Morfa next Sunday in what will be their equivalent of a local derby.
