Grace Episcopal Church

One God One Family One Table

Vision Grace Episcopal Church seeks to deepen relationships with God, bring individuals together into a family that builds up one another in love and support, and actively serve our neighbors and community.

Mission

In this family of faith God brings together individuals in all stages of their spiritual life to form an inclusive family. As a family, we encourage growth in relationships with God, others, ourselves, and the creation, in that we:

Practice invitation to God’s table,

Welcome and incorporate those who come,

Work together to worship the Lord in powerful liturgy,

Challenge, encourage and teach one another, and

Build one another up for ministry in and beyond the church.

Dear People of Grace: Bishop Doyle has asked us to reflect upon the blessing we have in our dear Priest-In-Charge, Suzanne, and remember that she is a product of The Seminary of the Southwest in Austin. Other churches are in need a Deacons and Priests, and would benefit from the wonderful program at The Seminary of the Southwest. As a symbol of our gratitude and blessing for The Rev Suzanne, the vestry has committed to a donation to The Seminary of the Southwest in Suzanne’s name. To meet that commitment, we ask you to prayerfully consider a giving towards this donation. You may write a check to Grace Church and put “Seminary gift” in the memo line and drop your check in the offertory plate or send it to the church office. Our goal is $3000. Together, as a parish family, we can pay it forward for other churches in transi-tion.

Red, White, and Blue Let’s extend the Fourth of July Holiday Treats, Games, and Fellowship Friday, July 5 at 7:00 PM Tommy and Becky Peebles House 404 Towne Court, Alvin, TX 77511 281-585-4790 Please bring your favorite 4th of July sweet or savory snack to share. Beverages will be provided. Bring a game to play if you like– but above all, PLEASE COME!

Vestry Notes More good news from your Grace Vestry. Highlights for May/June include: Ahhhhh…the pests in all buildings have been shown the door with no possible re-entry. Parish Hall updates are complete and we’re moving forward with rental activities. The tax appraisal for the parish rectory was lowered by over $30,000—thanks to Tommy Peebles for his help in getting this reduction. Operation Honey Badger was a great success with our church making the largest donation of all sites participating in the event. Mary Smith made a presentation on the Invite/Welcome/Connect program which encourages parish members to simply invite others to attend our church as the first step in making connections with new members. Developing Newcomer Kits were discussed. Please talk with Mary to learn more. Ed Carrette provided an Online Giving presentation. Offering access to online giving provides churches with many positive options beyond the offering plate. More to come on this in the coming months. Preliminary plans for Don’s Fish Fry were reviewed with some new ideas presented for hosting, packaging, and drive-through pick up. See the article on Don’s Fish Fry for more information. We’re moving fast so please check back with us next month for updates. Sherry Campbell

To my Grace Church Family, It has been my pleasure and a blessing to work at Grace as Parish Administrator for the past 9 months. As many of you know my daughter’s father, my ex-husband Christian Blevins who was a Military Police Lieutenant Colonel for the U.S. Army, passed away two months ago after a brief battle with Stage 4 cancer. His passing is a loss for our family and to our country, as he was one of the best officers I ever had the privilege of knowing. However, it also means a change of situation for my daughter, Allison and for myself. Due to this unexpected shift in our life I am no longer able to serve at Grace as your Parish Administrator. It was very difficult to come to this decision but ultimately I know it is the right choice for my daughter and for our future. Grace Episcopal Church will always be my home. It has been my home church since I was six years old. When I was younger I served as an acolyte and a member of the choir. I am so proud to have had this time as Parish Administrator to help find my place in our church once again. Thank you all for all the love and support you have given to me and to Allison. I look forward to seeing you on Sunday mornings and at our parish family events. Yours in Christ, Laura Tate

Vacation Bible School is coming to Grace in July! We are being blessed with a team of people coming to us from Min-nesota, and they want to come and help lead a vacation bible school for a small church, like us, who may not have the man-power or resources to fully take it on themselves.

Our theme will be Roar! Life is wild. God is good. Even when our life is crazy, like it was for the people in the bible, God is there and he will bring us to something good!

VBS will take place at Grace on July 22nd-25th from 9-noon, and it will be open to children going into grades K-6th.

To register your child, please go to www.gracechurchalvin.com/vacation_bible_school.

This Parish Life June was certainly a busy month! Cannonball! Marco Polo! These were the two

most popular water games held at the Callan’s pool party on June 1. Five kids and seven adults splashed their way through the summer afternoon. Pizza was served along with snacks, chips, and dips. Cool way to start the summer! Thanks to Jim and Jana for the wonderful treat.

June 2 offered a triple treat. Reverend Mike Stone

from St. Thomas the Apostle, Nassau Bay, preached at both services. In between the services, Bill Free treated parishioners to a home-cooked breakfast in honor of his birthday. To top it off, birthday cake provided by the Rossanos was served between the services as well—nobody went away hungry. A big “Thank You” goes to Rev. Mike, Bill, and the Rossanos.

June 9, the day of Pentecost, broke records for the

most exciting events to happen in one day at Grace Episcopal Church…ever! Thirty four (34) people who wanted to commit to belonging to Grace participated in the Liturgy of Belonging held during a combined service. Baby Olivia Negrete was baptized with her proud parents, Bonnie and Michael, looking on. After the service, Grace Church provided a chicken-dinner picnic while the children enjoyed trying out water slides brought in just for the occasion. Everyone enjoyed a grand time.

The Veterans Food Drive for The De George

Hotel at Union Station officially kicked off the second week in June. Our goal is to send 500 lbs of food to the vets the second week in July. Check back next month for the results!

On Saturday, June 15, a flock of hungry ladies,

29 to be exact, converged on Rocket Boom Coffee to enjoy coffee, tea, quiche, and sweets. Everyone enjoyed catching up with old friends and discovering new friends.

The summer is just beginning to sizzle—come back in July to hear what fun’s been cooking in the summer sun… Sherry Campbell

Kairos

The Kairos Prison Ministry is a faith based, lay-led, ecumenical ministry that brings the message of God’s love and Christ’s forgiveness to our incarcerated broth-ers and sisters throughout the world. “Kairos” is Greek for “God’s Time” as opposed to “Chronos” which is “Man’s Time”. It signifies that God is in control and will reach out to his chosen on his schedule, not ours. Our ministry is at the TDCJ Clemens Unit in Brazoria Texas near Lake Jackson, a medium security state pris-on housing approximately 1,100 inmates, which we call “residents”. We have about 40 volunteers who participate regularly twice each year for weekend retreats which have been modeled after the Emmaus and Cursillo Walks. A re-treat has a four day, spirit-filled agenda where approxi-mately 30 volunteers interact with 42 residents spread among seven groups we call “families.” There is a syllabus where Christianity is presented and discussed, little bites at a time. There are personal testi-monies by volunteers which help us connect with the residents. Our motto is “Listen-Listen-Love-Love” and our message is “forgiveness and brotherly love.” While we are ecumenical, you will be pleased to know Epis-copalians are well-represented. However, there is never any emphasis on our individual faiths, as we are all one in Christ. We cater to the gang leaders, the “worst-of-the-worst” and residents are always ethnically/racially balanced (by design). Weekend expenses are mostly funded by our own volunteer donations. At the end of each weekend, there is a closing ceremony that lasts about an hour and a half. The next one is Sunday November 17, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. It would be a great experience for you to attend a closing ceremony. Also, if you have a few minutes and want to know more, please Google “Paul Gray Prison Ministry” and watch Paul’s testimony on YouTube. The Kairos messages we bring to the prison will not reach all inmates simultaneously, and for many, probably not on our weekend, but the seeds are planted where they can grow and mature in fertile soil. Thus, Kairos time - “God’s time - not ours.” If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected]. Blessings and Kind regards; Jim Thompson

Don’s Fish Fry The date for Don’s Fish Fry has been set for Saturday, September 14 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. This is our 18th year to hold the fish fry and we will offer the same “delish” menu of catfish, hush puppies, green beans, coleslaw, corn on the cob, and dessert. Tickets are $10 and will be available for purchase beginning in August. Both indoor and outdoor seating are available this year along with a “To Go” lane on Hood Street for quick meal pick up. Expanded dessert offerings include cake and brownies as well as cookies. We will have a Fish Fry workday on Friday, September 13 to prep for the big fry. Work details include: fish cut up, coleslaw mixing, and green bean seasoning-packet assembly. Look for a signup sheet in the church narthex in August for Friday’s Team Fish, Team Slaw, and Team Green Bean. On the big day (September 14), we will need: Grace Greeters to help visitors find their way

around our fish fry campus. Grace Packers to assemble the meals. Grace Sweet Hosts to keep the dessert table

stocked with goodies. Grace Beverage Tenders to make sure the drinks

are cool. Signup sheets for all positions will be available in Au-gust in the church narthex. Please start planning how you would like to help—all hands will be appreciated!

us.” Northern Argentina Bishop Nick Drayson concurred, “The hope is that the Anglican Communion will become known as a group of churches made up of disciples who lead others to discipleship in all aspects of their lives, such as parenting, work, and life in one’s culture. It’s not just about church activities.” The program for ACC-17 was busy: there were four working sessions on most days but there were also opportunities for ACC members to see Hong Kong and experience the work of the church there first-hand. Each day began with Morning Prayer followed by Bible Studies in small groups. After morning sessions, there was daily Eucharist with leadership and content material to re-flect the richness and diversity of the Communion. After-noon sessions concluded with Evening Prayer. Most eve-nings included an opportunity to experience Compline to-wards the end of the day. On Tuesday, April 30, the Anglican Consultative Council heard the reports from the “Mission Cluster,” Women in Church and Society Report; Study Materials - God’s Justice: Just Relationships between Women and Men, Girls and Boys; the Anglican Communion Office at the United Nations (ACOUN) Report; and the Anglican Alliance Report (social welfare agencies in the Anglican Communion). Thanks be to God that our Christian family is alive, busy, and spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ. In August, I will write about the resolutions and public statements which were crafted by one hundred representatives from diverse backgrounds to spread God’s Kingdom on earth. Christopher Lo

Members of the Anglican Consultative Council pose May 2 outside their meeting room in the Gold Coast Hotel for a group photo. The ACC is composed of bishops, clergy and laypeople, making it the communion’s most representative body. Representing the Episcopal Church at ACC-17 were Oklahoma Bishop Edward J. Konieczny, the Rev. Canon Mi-chael Barlowe and Lay Canon Rosalie Ballentine from the Diocese of the Virgin Islands. Of the 99 members present at the 17th meeting of the ACC, there were 69 males and 30 females. More than half the delegates attending this meeting were new members, 55 were ordained and 43 were lay. Of the 56 ordained members, 9 were women. In the June edition of The Outpost, I discussed how Grace Episcopal Church in Alvin is connected to a wider family of Christians. Here below, I want to share more information about the 17th meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council. John Kafwanka, the Anglican Communion Office’s Director of Mission told ACC-17, “We have talked a lot about Jesus, but sadly, many people have not seen Jesus in
