Effects of the Fort Sumter attack
• In response to the fall of Fort Sumter, President Lincoln called for 75,000 volunteers to serve for 90 days in order to put down the rebellion.
• The southern states of Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina then joined the Confederacy.
• Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri were known as border states—slaveholding states that remained in the Union.
