An Unexpected Hunger H ave you ever sat down to eat not feeling hungry, but when you started eating you realized you were starving and could not eat fast enough? I recently experienced this feeling, not with food, but with my service before the altar. As a priest, I am afforded the privilege to participate in the Divine services as often as possible. Recently though, I went without serving for almost a week, instead only praying in the altar. The next time I served again, which happened to be a Great Vespers service, I felt invigorated and full of energy, like the high runners feel when they go for a long run. I prayed the petitions of the service with a fervor I had not known before. I could not get enough and the service seemed to end too soon. I did not realize how much I missed standing before the Holy altar table in prayer to God. I was in fact starving for it, but did not know it until I began praying that Great Vesper service. Our life in Christ is much like this. Quite often I think we do not realize how starving we are for Him who gives us true life. We fill our lives with so many different pursuits that we do not realize what we truly hunger for. We may have known this feeling at certain points in our lives, but we fall away, get distracted, and forget. However, unlike at dinner, we cannot simply sit down to the table, pick up a fork to eat, and hope to experience Christ in a way that is meaningful and true. We must put in the time to learn, connect, and cultivate our faith in Christ. Many of us, however, choose to not even sit down at the table, or maybe only once or twice a year. If we do this, how can we ever realize this hunger for Christ we have inside of us? In the Lords prayer, we ask God to Give us this day, our daily bread. The Orthodox Study Bible notes: Daily is a misleading translation of the Greek epiousios, which is literally above the essence,or supersubstantial. The ex- pression daily bread indicates not merely bread for this day, for earthly nourishment; it is the bread for the eternal day of the Kingdom of God, for the nourishment of our immortal soul. This living, supersubstantial bread is Christ Himself. In the Lord's Prayer, then, we are not asking merely for material bread for physical health, but for the spiritual bread of eternal life. (Note from Matthew 6:11) If we are seeking after something that is above material substance then surely this is something difficult to observe and we must try more than once or twice to try to attain it. Instead it must become a part of our whole being. We do not reach this goal without struggle day by day to nourish our souls with all that Christs Church has to offer. At the beginning of every calendar year, we love to make resolutions for the year. However, I encourage you to make a daily resolution. Start the day with prayer, even if its simply the Lords Prayer. Read the daily read- ings. Spend time alone with God. They say it takes thirty days to create a habit. I challenge you to do this for thirty days and see what happens on the other end. Of course, this daily prayer life can only be successful with participation in the Divine Liturgy and reception of Holy Communion, so make an effort to attend the Liturgy, at minimum, every Sunday. If you are used to going twice a year and every Sunday seems daunting, maybe (Continued on Page 2) Mission Statement: To proclaim the Gospel of Christ in the Orthodox Tradition while creating a vibrant, loving, compassionate and supportive community.” Inside this Issue Serving Our Ministry 2 All Saints Camp Annual Fundraiser Dinner Flyer 3 Philoptochos News– Janu- ary 4 Youth Ministry News 5 Youth Ministry News— Continued 6 Stewardship Update 7 Monthly Calendar 8 Announcements/ Recognitions 9 Youth Ministry News— Continued/Jubilee Women’s Center News 10 Memorials & Vigil Lights 11 OCMC News 12 St. Demetrios Office Hours: 9:30 am - 5:30 pm Monday - Friday Phone: 206-631-2500 Fax: 206-631-2550 Rentals: 206-631-2515 www.saintdemetrios.com Parish Directory Rev.Fr. An Unexpected Hunger

H ave you ever sat down to eat not feeling hungry, but when you started eating you realized you were starving and could not eat fast enough? I

recently experienced this feeling, not with food, but with my service before the altar. As a priest, I am afforded the privilege to participate in the Divine services as often as possible. Philoptochos News January 2017

Message from President Nina As the year comes to a close, I wish to thank everyone who contributed to the Philoptochos Warm Coat Drive. The clothing you provided will benefit men, women and children during the wet winter months and will be distributed to those in need at Jubilee Women’s Center, St. Martin de Porres Men’s Shelter and St. Philaret Feed the Homeless Ministry. I appreciate your concern for the less fortunate in our community. Thank You to Our Faithful Bakers Thank you to our bake sale chairpersons Nina Varlamos and Toula Stavros for their hard work and to everyone who came to bake in the midst of the busy holiday season. We are delighted with another successful Christmas bake sale which helps fund Philoptochos causes. Philoptochos Society of Saint Catherine Annual Valentine Tea Join the ladies of the Church of the Assumption in their beautiful community hall for a 'Hat and Gloves Tea Party'. Family and friends are welcome to come for tea, tasty treats, entertainment, door prizes and a raffle on Saturday, February 11th from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Your $10 donation benefits

[email protected]. Membership begins for 2017 January begins our membership drive for 2017. We hope you will support us with your annual dues of $40 and join us when you can for fellowship. All are welcome and if you have time to donate in addition to your check, even better. You will not receive a call when you write a check as we are a volunteer organization and we are grateful for every member whatever their participation. A membership form is included in January's Sunday bulletins and can be turned in to Dorothy Haskell. Consider Donating to Jubilee Womens Center Saint Demetrios Philoptochos continues its support of this place of refuge for single, homeless women in Seattle providing education, services and support needed to transition into independent living. For more information or to donate a meal, contact Georgene Karambelas at 206.829.9337 or [email protected]. To see all that Jubilee does, go to www.jwcenter.org. Shut In Parishioners If you are aware of someone who is a shut in, please call our Visitation Chairperson Kay Betts at 206.546.2370. If you would like to help with visitation in your part of town, please let Kay know you are available. Everyone is welcome to help and it means so much to those we take time to visit. Dress for Success Georgene Karambelas will also continue to collect donations for Dress for Success. She will also be collecting items for Working Wardrobe, a different program that accepts clothing more casual than interview outfits. Both programs also accept accessories; belts, purses, scarves, hats, umbrel-las and unopened, new hygiene items; shampoo, soap, make up, lotions, etc. Warmer clothes are needed in winter. Dress for Success and Working Wardrobe both require all clothing to be clean, pressed and on hangers. Georgene is collecting clothing not on hangers and hygiene items as well for the Jubilee Womens Center.

Winter Is Here and the Homeless Are Cold Downstairs in the large hall by the steps is a barrel for St. Philaret to collect blankets, sleeping bags, men’s items (socks, gloves, hats and coats). If you have the small soaps and shampoo left over from your vacation hotel, please consider packaging them in zip lock bags and donating them. For further information, you may contact Jillian Chandler at the Church of the Assumption at 206.323.8557 or Chris Macris at 425.888.0802. Please Give for Hungry Children

There are barrels in the Narthex and downstairs in the hallway for Northwest Harvest. Donations of food are especially needed during this time of economic hardship for so many. Monetary donations are also accepted, every little bit helps..... no donation is too small. If you don't want to carry canned goods to church, please consider a donation to your local food bank. BOOKSTORE NEWS:

The Book of the Month Club is reading Beginning to

Pray by Anthony Bloom. At the first meeting which cov-ered the introduction, it was decided to meet WEEKLY for six weeks starting on January 9th, covering one chapter each week. The schedule is as follows--January 9: Chapter 1; Jan. 16: Chapter 2; Jan. 23: Chapter 3; Jan. 30: Chapter 4; February 6: Chapter 5; and Feb. 13: Chapter 6. Pick up your copy at the bookstore and join the group. Your bookstore staff: Eugenia, Heather, Lindsay, and Theodora wish you a blessed New Year. Just as September marks our ecclesiastical new year, January marks our calendar new year. Both are opportunities for new starts, for renewing pledges to God, our families, and ourselves as we journey with Christ through life toward His Kingdom. Do consider renewing your book-reading abilities and interests. Your bookstore stocks many different books on a variety of subjects that are waiting for you to buy one or two to take home to grow with and help you expand your understanding of and experience of the faith. If you don't already, start reading books about Orthodoxy to your young children. At a young age, they soak up what they are taught by their parents. Books for teens and young adults also are in stock to help them keep focused on Christ and His Church. There are parenting books dealing with many issues including adoption and critical ill-ness, and books to help the grief-stricken and addicted. Prayer books, hardbound or paperback pocketsized, along with prayer ropes and prayer rope bracelets can help with the prayer life.

Make 2017 the Year of Book Renewal for you and for your children and grandchildren. Keep Orthodoxy alive in the home and in our hearts.

Our Condolences

W e express our Deep Condolences to Effie Chriest and her family for the pass-

ing of her husband, Hristo (Chris) Chriest. May his memory be eternal!

Godparent Sunday

T he role of the Godparent in the Orthodox Church is an important one. Along with the parents, the Godparent is

charged with the responsibility of assisting in the spiritual development of the child. Whether a blood relative or not, the Godparent is now embraced as part of the "spiritual family" of that child.

On Sunday, February 5, 2017, we will celebrate Godparent Sunday to recognize the importance of the Godparent/Godchild bond in Christ. On this special day, consider taking commun-ion together with your Godparent/Godchild. An opportunity for photos will also be available during the coffee hour.

Thank you for the VIPs Christmas Luncheon

“We would like to thank everyone for attending the VIP luncheon on Tuesday. We hope you enjoyed it! Special thanks to Georgine Looney, Shelley Buhler, Vicky Stamolis, Toula Poletti, Iska Pallis, George Lebesis, Christina Meletis, and Vasili Varlamos. Also Special thanks to Jim and Nina Rogers for all the Christmas gifts they donated! Merry Christmas, Vicki Pallis and Kris Dudunakis.”

Sunday School Update

Christmas Program – we are grateful for his time and talents in organizing such a wonderful performance! We also wish to thank the many Sunday School children and parishioners who donated to our Christmas Service Project that raised $6,664.10 to help dig a well for an Orthodox school in Kenya! Your generosity is most appreciated!

THANK YOU FOR 2016 MEALS- WISHES FOR A HAPPY 2017 FROM JUBILEE WOMEN’S CENTER

T he residents at JWC are very thankful for all the meals, clothing, toiletries and monetary donations they received from St. Demetrios Church in 2016. Thank you to all individuals and restaurants that gave so

generously. In December, St. D’s Philoptochos and Varlamos Pizza provided “Pizza Night” for a fun way to end 2016. On January 3rd, dinner was provided by Manda Bekris. The women shared how grateful they are to receive donated meals. When their budgets run low, or food stamps run out, the dinners we provide help tremendously. If you wish to provide a meal, donate or volunteer in 2017, please contact Georgene Karambelas at: 206 817 2523
