2 Italian American Social Club
Dear Members,
Hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. The club is doing well. Our Tuesdays and Fridays are doing very well, both financially and attendance.
During the months of September, October and November we will again have our membership drive whereas any immediate family member of a club member can join without paying the initiation fee; just pay $50 dues for the second half of the year. This was very successful last year and we hope it will be just as successful this year.
Also at our last General Meeting 120 members attended and voted in favor of opening the club on Tuesday nights only to members and their unlimited guests. We are hoping that by opening the club to these guests, they can see our club, have a meal, a drink and hopefully join.
I would like to thank Tom Woodward, Roy DiLiberti and Mike Kalasuki for painting the kitchen hallway floors and dishwasher area along with John LaCorte. Also Joe Renzo assisted Pete DiGuilio power washing our building and curb areas.
Our Festa is fast approaching. Chairperson Mike DeGuilio has taken on a huge task and needs much help. He can use all the volunteers he can get. If you would like to volunteer contact Mike or call the club any weekday between 9am and 3pm.
Don’t forget our Book Sale on September 3rd and our Chinese Auction on October 15th. Tickets for the auction are now on sale in the office.
Our Fall Harvest Dinner Dance is on September 24th. You can buy tickets, any Tuesday or Friday nights from 5pm to 7pm or any weekday in the office between 9am to 1pm.
We are going to try something new. On November 3rd, we are running a bus trip to Jacks or Better Casino ship in Jacksonville. The tickets will be $35 and you will receive $25 in free play and $10 food voucher. I am also working on receiving comp drinks. The ship is holding a slots tournament that day with a $500 prize. Right now we only have one bus which will fill up fast. We will hire a second bus if we get enough people to fill it. If you are interested contact Marie Woodward ASAP.
This month we have a variety of new items on our menu. Check out the menu on the back page. I’m sure you will find something you like.
Hope to see you at our club soon.
Until next month stay well and God Bless.
Pat LaCorte, President
The Italian American Social Club at Palm Coast

Executive Board Meeting August 11, 2011The net surplus for the month of July was $751. Complete report is posted outside office door.
Texas Hold-em is proving to be profitable for the club.
Bar floor will be painted, since tiling proved to be too expensive. They will also be painting the pads outside the front and side doors.
Starting in Sept. we will begin to pay for advertising events we are having at the club.
General Meeting August 17, 2011Members were reminded that they are responsible to make sure that their guests are properly dressed on Fri. night. Remember we do have a dress code.
Reminder: If you wish to have an antipasto it must be ordered in advanced.
Dinner for our General Meetings must be ordered and paid for in advance to make sure we have enough food for all who are attending.
Members must sign themselves in at a General Meeting. Husbands and wives cannot sign each other in.
Director Honey Maresco made a motion to open membership for Sept./Oct./Nov for family members of current members to join without having to pay an initiation fee. The board agreed that this would be a good idea.
With much discussion for and against, the vote was taken for Tues. to be guest night. It passed by a very slight margin. Tues. will now be open for members to sign in guests as many times as they wish. This is for Tues only, and guests must be signed in by a member.
We received a very nice thank-you from Theresa Gray, sister of John Bonomo, thanking us for a very nice luncheon.
Committee ReportsMembership Chairperson Marie Galluccio introduced 15 new members at the August 17th General Meeting. We now have 789 members.
Health and Welfare: Chaplain Dino reported that two sympathy cards were sent.
Social Chairs Virginia Esposito and Mickey Logemann: Luau went well, attendance was up, and everyone had a good time. Our next event is Sept. 24th and tickets are on sale

Chairperson John LaCorte reported that bingo continues to be slow. Please come and join us. It is a lot of fun and you will be supporting our club.
Newsletter Editor Roe Barletta apologized for the lateness and asked for our patience. We are going to a new printer that will save us money, and with the help of the board we are going to try a whole new mailing system.
Pot of Gold Chairperson Joe Abitante is having a problem collecting payments before new three month cycle begins. The board gave permission to have a cutoff date. If date is not met, member will lose their number. There is a waiting list.
Volunteer Coordinator Marie Woodward would like to thank all who volunteer, and is pleased with the response she receives when asking members.

HERITAGE COMMITTEE
ENRICO FERMI Enrico (September 29, 1901- November 28, 1954) is a famous Italian physicist mainly known for his work on the development of the first nuclear reactor called the Chicago Pile-1. He contributed significantly to the development of Quantum theory, nuclear and particle physics, and statistical mechanics. In 1938, he received the Nobel Prize for his work on induced radioactivity. Enrico was a leading scientist of the 20th century along with J. Robert Oppenheimer. These two are considered the “Fathers” of the atomic bomb.
Enrico for his significant works received several awards over the years. Awards and institutions have been named for him, i.e., the Enrico Fermi Award,… Institute, …Accelerator Lab, the Enrico Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope and a type of particle called fermions.
Enrico was born in Rome to Alberto Fermi and Ida de Gattis, an elementary school teacher who built her own pressure cooker. Enrico had a brother Giulio slightly older than him that he loved dearly. Giulio died suddenly from a throat ailment. Enrico in distracting himself from his loss immersed himself in scientific studies. In 1918, Fermi went to the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, where he received his undergraduate and doctoral degree. While at the school in his third year, he published his first scientific work in an Italian journal, Nuovo Cimento and others. His third publication was so successful that it was translated into German and published in a famous German scientific journal. Fermi continued making significant scientific discoveries and at the age of twenty-four, he received a professorship at the University of Rome, where he developed a team of scientists. The team made many contributions to many practical and theoretical aspects of physics, such that opportunities arose for positions in other universities and countries for team members; consequently, many took advantage to move on.
After receiving his Nobel Prize in Stockholm, Fermi, his wife Laura, and their children immigrated to New York, because of Mussolini’s Manifesto of Race. The new law threatened Laura, who was Jewish. The new law also put many of Fermi’s research assistants out of work. Upon arrival in New York, he began working at Columbia University. It was there a team conducted the first experiment on nuclear fission involving him. Fermi, subsequently, went to U of Chicago and began research that led to the first nuclear pile. This led him to become a major player in the Manhatten Project, that created the atom bomb. Fermi became a U.S. citizen in 1944.
Fermi continued his work until his death. He had a favorite proposition on which he often thought. Many refer to it as the Fermi Paradox, i.e., with the billions and billions of star systems in the universe, one would think that intelligent life would have contacted our civilization by now.
