Warm water is killing sockeye salmon More than a quarter-million sockeye salmon returning from the ocean to spawn are dying in the Columbia River and its tributaries due towarming water temperatures. Lethal for the cold-water species, the warm water is wiping out at least half of this year's return of 500,000 fish. Oregon and Washington state have enacted sport fishing closures due to the warm water. Management teams are trying to cool flows below70 degrees Fahrenheit by releasing cold water from reservoirs to try to prevent similar fish kills among chinook salmon and steelhead, which

migrate later from the Pacific Ocean. Associated Press, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 7/28/15, p. A10

In the east, the subject of Oregon was more political than personal. In 1844 the Democrats nominated James K. Polk,

an unknown candidate from Tennessee. The Whig Party candidate, Henry Clay, was expected to win in a landslide,

as his illustrious career was widely known. Polk was an excellent strategist, though, realizing that manifest destiny was

the issue that could give him victory. He called for expansion that included Texas, California, and the entire Oregon

territory. The northern boundary of Oregon was the latitude line of 54 degrees, 40 minutes. "Fifty-four forty or fight!"

was the popular slogan that led Polk to victory against all odds. (ushistory.org)

Oregon has been at the forefront of the craft beer renaissance from the very beginning. In fact, some people wouldsay that the craft-beer culture has its origins in and around Portland. Oregon is home to more than 200 breweries, and Portland has the most breweries per capita in the U.S., many world-class.

Keep Your Brain SharpThe psychologist says: PLAY GAMES. Try doing a word scramble, crossword puzzle, or sudoku against the clock. Choose hobbies that keep your mind engaged - painting, writing, playing board games [Ed. Note: & bridge!] and dothem regularly.(Cynthia Green, PhD) The neuroscientist says: TAKE A BRISK WALK. Exercise triggers positivechanges in your brain, including forging new connections between nerve cells, increasing blood flow, and evencreating new brain cells. (Arrhur F. Kramer, PhD) The neurologist says: EAT YOUR VITAMINS B, C, D, and E. Whenever possible, try to get these nutrients from food instead of pills. Avoid foods that contain trans fats, includingfried foods and many packaged baked goods. (Orly Avitzur, MD) Woman’s Day, October 2012, p. 180

What do you know about your ACBL player number?(from The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge)

Since July 1961 the American Contract Bridge League has been assigning each member a 7-digit player number. The last digit in each number is a self-checking device by which the computer knows when to throw out incorrectnumbers. The method by which the checking digit is computed is interesting. Multiply the first 6 digits by 7, 6, 5, 4,3, and 2 respectively, then add these products. Then divide the total of the sum of the products by 11 and note theremainder. Subtract the remainder from the divisor, 11, and the resulting difference should equal the check digit. Ifit does not, or if the net result of this work is a remainder of 1, then the number is not used. When a player achievesLife Master status, this is indicated by a change in their player number by the substitution of a letter for the first digit, alphabetically, from J for 1 to R for 9.

Easley Blackwood thought up the basics of his convention while playing in an Indiana bridge tournament in 1933. On one handhe and his partner bid up to seven spades, each thinking the other had the ace, and they lost the tournament because of it. Hissystem is perhaps the most-used convention in bridge, but when he tried to test it later that year he and his partner were barred! By 1950 most books on bidding had a section on the Blackwood Convention and recommended its use. John Clay, Tales from the Bridge Table, 1988, pp. 212-214

Oregon has been at the forefront of the craft beer renaissance from the very beginning. In fact, some people wouldsay that the craft-beer culture has its origins in and around Portland. Oregon is home to more than 200 breweries, and Portland has the most breweries per capita in the U.S., many world-class.

Tim Golden, "On Tap in Hawaii," Honolulu Star-Bulletin, March 18, 2015, p. D2

Easley Blackwood thought up the basics of his convention while playing in an Indiana bridge tournament in 1933. Onone hand he and his partner bid up to seven spades, each thinking the other had the ace, and they lost thetournament because of it. His system is perhaps the most-used convention in bridge, but when he tried to test it laterthat year he and his partner were barred! By 1950 most books on bidding had a section on the BlackwoodConvention and recommended its use. John Clay, Tales from the Bridge Table, 1988, pp. 212-214
