London, 1935. Ruby is always hungry,

but she will go without if it means her young brothers can eat. 1930s

Bermondsey might be called the larder

of London, with its pie, pickle and jam

factories, but for the poor working classes, starvation is a heartbeat away.

When Ruby's neighbour suggests she

go to the Methodist Mission for free food, Ruby knows her father will be

furious, but that she has no other option. It is a decision that will

change the course of her life forever and lead her to face a terrible choice between duty and a great love.

Nora Roberts (born Eleanor Marie Robert-

son on October 10, 1950) is an Amer ican

author of more than 225 romance novels.

She writes as J. D. Robb for the in Death series

and has also written under the pseudonyms Jill March and for publications in the U.K.

as Sarah Hardesty.

Nora was born in Silver Spring, Maryland, the

youngest of five children. She married young

and settled in Keedysville, Maryland. She worked briefly as a legal secretary. “I could

type fast but couldn’t spell, I was the worst

legal secretary ever,” she has said.

After her sons were born she stayed home and

tried every craft that came along. A blizzard in February 1979 forced her to try another

creative outlet. Nora had never known a time

that she wasn’t reading or making up stories,

so she began to write one of them. Several manuscripts and rejections later, her first

book, Irish Thoroughbred, was published by

Silhouette in 1981.

Nora met her second husband, Bruce Wilder,

when she hired him to build bookshelves. They were married in July 1985. Since that

time, they’ve expanded their home, travelled

the world and opened a bookstore together.

Nora is a member of several writers groups and

has won countless awards from her colleagues and the publishing industry. The New Y ork-

er has called her “America’s favorite novelist.”

She was the first author to be inducted into the

Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. More info: www.noraroberts.com

Castle Rock (Series 1) 2019.

A psychological-horror series,

Castle Rock is an original story

that combines King's best-loved works, played out on a few square miles of

Maine woodland.

An anonymous phone call lures death-row

attorney Henry Deaver back to Castle Rock.

He is unsettled by his hometown, but he returns to help a sinister, mostly mute man

being kept in a cage underneath Shawshank

Prison.

The series begins with an actual storyline, but

progresses into a confusing mix of relating episodes - one being Sissy Spacek’s character

dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. Her excep-

tional performance doesn’t detract from the

bewilderment this viewer felt at the end of series one. Perhaps another series will help

tie up the countless loose ends. JR

You don’t have to be a

poet to use your library

Ozymandias I met a traveller from an antique land

Who said: ‘Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,

Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.

And on the pedestal these words appear -

"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare

The lone and level sands stretch far away.’ Percy Bysshe Shelley, 1817.

I wish I’d written this! JR
