The CONNECTION A Note From Pastor Stephanie
“Then he got into the boat and his
disciples followed him. Suddenly a
furious storm came up on the lake so
that the waves swept over the boat. But
Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went
and woke him, saying, “Lord save us!
We’re going to drown!” Matthew 8:24-
25
This past week Hurricane
Harvey inundated Texas with its raging
winds and rains, and then it moved on
to Louisiana causing more flooding.
We were blessed to be spared from
Harvey’s wrath.
All of this has caused me to
reflect on Hurricane Katrina which
flattened my childhood home. My
mother and father lived in a FEMA
trailer for close to four years. It was
United Methodists who came and
brought to them small appliances and
many other necessities they had lost.
The devastation in Texas and Louisiana
will do the same to thousands as it did
during Katrina. It was a difficult time
and only through God did my mother
and father get through that time. There
were hundreds who drowned and right
now they are recovering people who
drowned in Harvey.
The Scripture tells in Matthew 8
that Jesus rebuked the winds and waves
and it was completely calm. The
disciples asked who is this man even
the wind and waves obey. Jesus can
bring to all those who have been
affected peace in the middle of this
devastating storm.
How can we help those who are
experiencing a storm of unprecedented
proportions? We can pray for the
victims and their families. We can give
to the United Methodist Committee on
Relief (UMCOR) who is already on the
ground bringing supplies in to help
those who have lost everything. Some
can go as volunteers as soon as the
water recedes and it is safe to go help
clean up.
We all have storms in life that
we go through. We have all said, “Lord
save us.” Let us be the church and help
those who are in dire need at this time.
Bishop Graves has asked for
each church in the conference to take
up a special offering this Sunday for
those who have lost everything. If you
would like to give you can mark your
check “Hurricane Harvey-Texas
Disaster Response” or go on line and
donate directly to UMCOR. This will
be sent to the conference office who
will give it to UMCOR to help in
recovery efforts.
. Blessings and love,
Pastor Stephanie and
Jack

September 22-24
Bible Study
Sue Wilson will be leading a Bible Study
beginning Sept 6th at 6pm. “Transforming
Grace—Living Confidently in God’s Unfailing
Love” by Jerry Bridges Wednesday’s at 6pm.
Transforming Grace is a practical, biblical, and
powerful exposition of the truth of grace, grace
which frees from guilt and legalism, but which
inspires us toward holy living because of our
appreciation of what God did for us.
Women’s Bible Study
Robyn Robbins will be leading a Women’s Bible
Study beginning Sept 11th at 9am “Me, Myself, and
Lies” by Jennifer Rothschild. Clean out the junk in
your mind and replace hidden negative thoughts
with positive truths from God's word. Words are
powerful. Especially the words women speak to
themselves. All too often, what they say to
themselves when they lie in bed at night or look in
the mirror in the morning is not even close to the
words God wants them to speak to their souls.
According to Rothschild, what we think about often
has a ripple effect on nearly every area of our lives.

SERVE MINISTRY People Want Their Lives to Matter and Make a Difference
UMCOR is currently working with disaster coordinators and early response teams
in Louisiana and Texas to provide relief to the many people whose lives have been
impacted by hurricane/tropical storm Harvey. We will continue to update the
UMCOR website and social media as we receive new information.
5 Things You Can Do 1. Please continue to pray for those whose lives have been impacted by hurricane/tropical storm Harvey. Please also pray for the Early Response Teams, disaster
coordinators, and many volunteers in The Texas Annual Conference of the United Method-ist Church, Louisiana Conference of The United Methodist Church, Río Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church and Central Texas Conference who are working tirelessly to provide relief after Harvey.
2. Make relief kits, send complete kits to our relief-supply depots or an affiliate ware-house. Download the packing list and shipping label.
3. Partner with UMCOR in responding to the needs of communities and individuals impacted by Hurricane Harvey by giving to Advance #901670:
To give by mail:
Advance GCFA P.O. Box 9068 New York, NY 10087-9068 Please note in the memo line: Advance 901670
4. Donate only those items requested.
5. Please wait for an invitation to volunteer.

CHEERFUL HEARTS What a lively time we shared at the August event. All our guests
enjoyed the evening so much and expressed what a blessing our
church family is to them. With smiles and hugs they thanked us and
one shared she had told her mother how much she enjoys visiting
our church. Thank you for all the donations of time, funds, and food to
make it happen. To God be the Glory and may they (our guests from the 4
SpectraCare Homes) be able to sense His love for them. Our next event is
scheduled for Oct. 24, 5:00-6:30 and will be our traditional Fall Festival. We
will need help with greeting, serving, playing games. You will want to
remember, some of our guests use walkers, some are just slow, some are
elderly, some just “unsure” of new things so they need our encouragement
and prayers even as they visit us. What joy they experience though when
they get to participate in these events. Please pray for our planning and
God’s leading in all things.
If you are new to our church family, Cheerful Hearts is a service ministry to 45 special needs adults ranging in ages from about 35-70 living in 4 Spectra Care group homes
here in Dothan supported through donations and volunteers.
"Do all the good you can,... at all the times you can,... for as long as
you ever can." J. Wesley

Join us the First Thursday of every month. We share food donated by Greystone members. And share the Love of Christ with them through Prayer.

Love In Action International Ministries spreads
the Gospel of Jesus Christ through acts of
compassion in our hometown of Dothan, Ala.,
inner cities throughout the US, and other parts
of the world. Jesus tells us in Matthew 25:35-
40 that we are to take care of the neediest
among us. In verse 40 He says, "I assure you:
Whatever you did for one of the least of these
brothers of Mine, you did for Me."
They also believe in carrying out the Great
Commission Jesus gives all of His followers in
Matthew 28:19-20. Therefore, we go to the
nations reaching the lost and unreached peo-
ple with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and make
disciples.
The United Methodist Church is a
connectional denomination. That
means all UMC’s are connected to
one another through annual
conferences. Keep up with what’s
happening and learn more about
your Alabama-West Florida
Conference from their website:

A.R.M.E.D., Men’s Club, meets 2nd Mondays
at 6:30pm in the church sanctuary for a
