In our adult years, the lifestyle choices we make can dramatically increase our chances of becoming ill later in life.
One You is a new campaign from Public Health England designed to help people improve their health. Making small changes now can improve our health right away and double our chances of staying healthy as we get older. It’s never too late to start.
To help you support your employees to make healthy changes, we’ve created the One You 4-week workplace challenge, based on 4 main behaviours that have a huge influence on our health and well-being.
We want to help people to eat well, move more, drink less and be smoke free.
Don’t forget to encourage employees to take our online health quiz to point them in the right direction. Simply search One You for more information.
If you can help get your employees in better shape over 4 fun weeks of physical and mental activity, imagine how much happier and productive everyone could be!

One You is a behaviour change campaign, aimed at adults across England. It will be seen by everyone either on TV, in press and outdoor advertisements, online or prominently displayed by our partners, for instance in pharmacies and supermarkets nationwide.
Tools in the KitIn the next few pages you’ll find everything you need to help inspire your employees to sign up to the One You 4-week challenge, make pledges and stay motivated, so at the end of the month everyone can celebrate their success, and feel better for it.
GETTING STARTEDWithin your pack you will find: • Bunting • Posters • Wall charts • Stickers • Conversation starters
and Dispensers
There’s also a series of online banners of different shapes and sizes, and an email signature strip staff can add to their existing signature to help spread the word.
Remind staff of the 4-week challenge by placing the stickers in key locations such as in the staff restaurant, on vending machines, lift doors, and in the smoking area.
Plus, you might want to kick things off with an event, where your employees all pledge to take the 4-week challenge at the same time.

The Long versionIn our adult years, the lifestyle choices
we make can dramatically increase
our chances of becoming ill later in life.
One You is a campaign from Public
Health England to help change the way
we live our lives. Making small changes
now can improve our health right away
and double our chances of staying
healthy as we get older. It’s never too
late to start.
The One You 4-week challenge is
designed to help you get back to a
healthier you. Choose a new healthy
habit, stick to it for a month, and see
how good it feels.
Whether you decide to move more,
eat well, drink less or be smoke free,
make your personal pledge. Your
challenge could be eating 5-a-day,
taking the stairs, saying no to alcohol,
or stopping smoking.
Don’t forget to encourage employees
to take our online health quiz to point
them in the right direction. Simply
search One You for more information.
Talk to (insert your name) about the
4-week challenge and search
One You online for more hints and
tips about staying healthy for good.
Because there’s only One You.
The short versionIn our adult years, the lifestyle choices we make can dramatically increase our chances of becoming ill later in life. The One You 4-week challenge is designed to help you get back to a healthier you.

When the 4-week challenge starts everyone needs to know about it. Encourage your staff to talk about it on their own social media accounts and spread the word with colleagues in as many ways as possible. Start by including messaging like the examples opposite on your intranet, which does a great job in telling everyone that the challenge is coming, and don’t forget to promote it on notice boards and in all of your newsletters, emails or magazine articles.

Woo-hoo halfway through!
Brilliant so far, keep it up, you’re halfway there. How are your colleagues doing? Do they need a bit of extra support if they’re wavering? The team challenges seem like a lot of fun; don’t forget to share any photos and remember, get in touch if there’s anything we can help with.
Keep updating your intranet over the 4-week period, and if you have a newsletter include an article, and send email reminders to keep the momentum going. You can write as many as you like but if you want to keep it to one a week here are a few suggestions of the sort of messages you could include:
Stay strong, you’ve turned the corner
Okay, it’s the third week in and your new habits should be starting to feel like second nature. Think how good you’ll feel about yourself when you get back to work on Monday knowing you’ve resisted temptation over another weekend. So keep it up, you’re nearly on the home stretch.
Well done! How are you now?
Fantastic, you’re there, done it, sorted! It’s time to celebrate (but let’s not over-indulge), share stories and see how everyone else has done. We might even have a bit of a do to mark the occasion, so look out for details. But now you’re feeling good about yourself, don’t stop! Search One You online for more hints and tips about staying healthy for good. Because there’s only One You.
Today’s the day to take the challenge!
Get in touch if you need any hints and tips to make it as easy as possible, or if you have any questions, or even just fancy a chat about how things are going.

What a week that was!
So it’s the end of the first week, how did you get on? From what we hear everyone’s staying very determined and has definitely risen to the challenge. Why not share your progress with your family and friends on social media and tell them what you’re doing and how well it’s going? It could inspire them to search One You for themselves and take the free health quiz. Keep it up!

cut back on alcohol
How about getting everyone
to drink less and raise money
for a good cause. They could
be sponsored with money
going to a designated charity.
The fewer drinks drunk, the
more money is raised. For
help along the way use the
Drinks Tracker app.
team quitIt’s easier to do difficult things together, so get your staff to pledge to stop smoking in teams. For extra support use the Smokefree app.
Mountain Climb
Get your staff to move more by
challenging them to climb stairs in the
workplace rather than using the lift,
to the equivalent height of Ben Nevis.
Calculate how many stairs need to be
climbed over the 4-week period and
give out prizes to the person or team
who conquers Ben Nevis first. If you
haven’t got stairs then team up and use
the Couch to 5k app.
Your pack contains posters, wall charts and bunting ready for display. They should be as visible as possible and be placed in communal areas, such as in kitchens, around the notice board, or the staff canteen. The materials will also be available as digital downloads and be photocopy
friendly, so you can print as many as you need.
The wall chart is a place for everyone to make their pledges and track their progress throughout the 4-week period. If your employees are stuck for ideas here are some suggestions:
BE SUGAR SMARTOrganise teams with the aim of reducing sugar over the 4 weeks. The team that cuts back most on sugar gets tea made for them (sugar free) the following week by the team who cut back the least. For help along the way use the Sugar Smart app.
‘Eat Well’ pledges
• Start the day with a
healthy breakfast
• Eat your 5-a-day
• Say no to unhealthy
snacks and puddings
‘Drink Less’ pledges• Pace yourself on a night out – have a glass of
water between every alcoholic drink
• Swap cocktails for mocktails
• Order a soft drink instead of an alcoholic one
‘Move More’ pledges• Break up sitting time with a walk at lunchtime• Take the stairs instead of the lift• Start a new exercise
‘Be Smoke Free’
pledge
• STOP for 28 days
(because you’re more
likely to stop for good
if you do)
Track your success
There’s nothing better than a bit of healthy competition to up the motivation levels.
So we’re suggesting a big group challenge, where you get together with colleagues to do something in a group, as well as taking part as individuals.
For this we’ve provided an A4 poster with a blank space for you to describe what your company is up to, outline any big group challenges you’ve thought of, hero any stand out performances and publicise any incentive or reward schemes you may have going.
It would be great if you could think up big group challenges of your own, but here are some fun ideas for starters:
DOING IT TOGETHER

![Page 7: The One You - Microsoft · Swap cocktails for mocktails • racker app for added support? Be smoke free • STOP for 28 days (because you’re more like to stop for good if you do).](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081611/5f0391207e708231d409b042/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
For your workforce the One You 4-week challenge is a way to get together, take part in something worthwhile and encourage each other to make small changes to be more healthy. It can also integrate into your own well-being programme, if you have one.
Here’s a timeline with some ideas to help you promote the 4-week challenge alongside your own health and well-being activities.

![Page 8: The One You - Microsoft · Swap cocktails for mocktails • racker app for added support? Be smoke free • STOP for 28 days (because you’re more like to stop for good if you do).](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022081611/5f0391207e708231d409b042/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Keeping it goingThe One You 4-week challenge won’t be a walk in the park – although a walk in the park would be a good place to start.
To keep the enthusiasm up and the momentum going it’s important to really motivate your colleagues, as there will be times they will flag and need a pat on the back.
So perhaps set up a buddy system, and keep sending emails reminding everyone how well they’re doing. And remember, we’re here to help. Any time you need to know anything, or you need any more materials from us, please contact [email protected]
