HONORS RECOGNITIONS Students are recognized at graduation for superior academic achievement. This recognition is signified by “honors cords” given at Commencement rehearsal to those who have achieved honors status and added to their academic regalia for the ceremony. The following honors are based upon the grade point average achieved during the full college career at the University of Mount Union. Grade point averages are based upon an A as 4.000. Students achieving a grade point average of 3.900 or better are awarded their degrees summa cum laude signified by the gold honors cord, students achieving a grade point average of 3.750 to 3.899 are awarded their degrees magna cum laude signified by the silver honors cord, and students achieving a grade point average of 3.550 to 3.749 are awarded their degrees cum laude signified by the white honors cord. In addition, honors recognition is granted to students who show superior achievement in special honors programs. A red honors cord is awarded to students graduating with honors in a major as defined by the awarding department.

ACADEMIC REGALIA The history and pageantry of academic regalia goes back to the medieval universities of Europe in the 11th and 12th centuries. Gowns were everyday dress, providing for their wearers not only distinction but also warmth during long hours of study in poorly heated buildings.Academic life as we know it today began in the church and then spread throughout the guilds. The teaching guild was the guild of the master of arts, where the bachelor was the apprentice of the master; the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. It became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of their academic dress or regalia. Since the 15th century, both Cambridge and Oxford universities in England have made academic dress a matter of university control, even to its minor details, and have repeatedly published revised regulations. Although academic regalia is seen only at such formal affairs as commencement, dedication ceremonies, and inaugural exercises on American campuses today, it has been governed by an Academic Costume Code, established in 1895 and revised by the American Council of Education from time to time. When the Academic Costume Code is followed, it is possible to identify the highest degree that the wearer holds, the college or university that awarded it, and the course of study that it represents. The distinguishing features are the cut of the gown, the color of the tassel on the cap, and the lengths and colors of the hood. The gowns have three distinctive sleeves: long sleeves for the bachelor’s gown, longer closed sleeves with arm slits at the elbow for the master’s gown, and bell-shaped sleeves extending to the wrist for the doctor’s gown. The bachelor’s gown, usually black in color, is worn closed; the master’s gown, also most frequently black, is worn open or closed, depending partly upon its tailoring; and the doctor’s gown, either black or of the official colors of the degree granting university, is worn open or closed, depending on the preference of its wearer. The bachelor’s and master’s gowns have no trimming; the doctor’s gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves. This velvet trim is either black, or is a color adopted by the university granting the doctor’s degree or is the color associated with the discipline to which the degree pertains. A cap is worn with each type of gown. The bachelor’s cap has a stiff, square flat top known as a “mortarboard;” its tassel is either black or is a color associated with the wearer’s degree. The master’s cap is identical to the bachelor’s cap, but the tassel is almost always black. The doctor’s cap, ordinarily black, is either a “mortarboard” or a soft, cushion-like design; the tassel is either black or gold.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MOUNT UNION MACE

The mace is traditionally carried by the university marshal on formal academic occasions at many institutions of higher education. Originally a weapon of war, the mace today has become a peaceful symbol of the authority accorded a university that regularly grants academic degrees to students who have fulfilled the requirements for graduation in one of the several fields of study offered by that university. The University of Mount Union mace is constructed in part of wood from the Old Carding Mill in Alliance, where the first University classes were held on the third floor on October 20, 1846. The sections at the top and bottom of the mace are emblematic of the lamp of learning at the center of the University seal. It is fitting that a portion of the Old Mill thus survives as a continuing symbol of the excellent liberal arts education that continues to be a hallmark of Mount Union.

The hood is of three lengths: three feet for the bachelor’s hood, three and one-half feet for the master’s hood, and four feet for the doctor’s hood. The color of the velvet edging, which is wider for the higher degrees than for the bachelor’s hood, indicates the subject area to which the degree pertains. In addition to the colored edging, the hood shows in its lining the official colors of the college or university that awarded the degree. The hood is worn in such a way that a large part of the lining is visible. In nearly every academic procession there will appear a few costumes that do not conform to the standard patterns described above. Gold braid is sometimes added to the gowns of academic administrators and trustees; the color of the trustees’ gowns may be specified by the college. Many faculties include a few members who hold degrees from foreign universities, some of which prescribe very colorful regalia of varying designs. The following colors are associated with the various faculties or disciplines:

THE FLAGS OF THE NATIONS

The University of Mount Union serves as the educational institution for many international students each year. The University acknowledges the importance of these students to the campus community by displaying the flags of their home nations in the lobby of the Kolenbrander-Harter Information Center throughout the year. This year, we especially recognize the nations of our international student graduates and international visiting faculty – Australia, China, England, France, Germany, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and Spain. The flags of these nations are displayed as part of our graduation regalia.

PLEASE NOTE The University of Mount Union Commencement is a culmination of much work and sacrifice on the part of students as well as their families and friends. To many in the class, it will be the end of their formal education, and to others, it is another step toward a profession or graduate degree. In keeping with the academic significance and dignity of the Commencement day, the University limits the activities of its guests to those appropriate to the observation of the graduation ceremony. Guests are requested to refrain from posting signs, distributing literature, or undertaking any other activities that are not related to the officially scheduled events of the day and that might interfere with the joy and celebration of the graduates and their families. To assist us in making this day most meaningful, your cooperation is requested. When the graduates, faculty, and the official party of the University process to begin the ceremonies, please stand and remain standing until the invocation has been given by the University chaplain. We ask that you remain in your seats during the Commencement exercises. In accordance with state mandates and the institution’s 2020 Fall Responsible Reopening, all Commencement participants and guests will be required to wear an appropriate face covering during the duration of the ceremony and time on campus. We also ask that you maintain a physical distance of six feet from those not within your party at all times while on campus for Commencement Weekend. Please remain in your seat during the duration of the ceremony. Refrain from attempting to make your way to the stage to take photos of graduates as they receive their diplomas. A professional photographer will be on hand to capture the memory of today’s event. Photographs will be taken of graduates once they exit the stage. A backdrop will be provided, and graduates will be permitted to remove their face coverings for the photo. These images, as well as general Commencement day photographs, will be available through Cockrill’s Studio. Visit cockrillsstudio.com and click on University of Mount Union to view photos or call (330) 821-8303. We also realize you will be anxious to meet your graduate at the close of the event. Following the ceremony, the Commencement recessional will lead graduates out of Mount Union Stadium toward the Quad area so that graduates can disperse with space to social distance. Guests will remain in their seats in Mount Union Stadium until the recessional retires. Guests will then be permitted to exit Mount Union Stadium via the designated access point they used to enter and will then be instructed to make their way east, through the King Hall parking lot and Dewald Chapel area, to be reunited with their graduates in the Quad area. Your cooperation will help Mount Union make Commencement most meaningful to the students as well as to their families. Thank you.

The University Marshal

Statement Regarding Degree Completion: The University of Mount Union and the Office of the University Registrar make every effort to provide a comprehensive and accurate list of participants for this ceremony. Occasionally, last minute changes may occur and affect the list of participants. The actual list of graduates may differ from what is listed in this program.
