Product safety is paramount and, with many products sourced from the global marketplace, itcan be difficult to keep abreast of what is required in different parts of the world in terms oflegislation on chemicals and restricted substances. This can be a veritable minefield and has thepotential to be costly in terms of finance and reputation.Are you aware of the different legislation which applies to your footwear?Does your company have a testing programme to ensure that your footwear does not contain hazardous chemicals?Is your footwear fit for purpose?These questions are particularly important when dealing with children’s footwear.

Depending on where your customers are located you will need to be familiar with the following:United StatesCPSIA - the consumer product safetyimprovement act of 2008 controls theamount of lead and phthalates inconsumer products intended primarilyfor children 12 years old or under.Proposition 65 is an initiative toaddress growing concerns aboutexposure to toxic chemicals. Itcovers all products and servicesdistributed in the State ofCalifornia and requires that warnings vialabelling, newspaper notices, etc are issued relatingto chemicals on the Proposition 65 list, which includesover 800 chemicals.Europe REACH – deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicalsubstances and all products supplied within Europe must be compliant, in particular substancesidentified as being of very high concern (SVHCs).ChinaGB standards are mandatory for leather products sold into China and brands in breach of GBstandards may have their products seized from stores.To ensure consistent quality and performance for footwear, BLC recommends that you setrealistic specifications, coupled with a sensible and balanced chemical testing regime in linewith current legislation and industry standards.

Winter 12 sees the continuation of a great range of classicstyling from Gant Footwear. The women’s collection fitsbeautifully with the Fall themes; Christmas inManhattan, American Style and WinterNautical, featuring an autumnal colourpalette from browns to bordeaux.

There is a fantastic selection of ridingboots, reflecting the Gant motto of‘American casualness with European style’in soft leathers with buckle detailing.Following the success of the ‘Teddi’ boot (shown), Ganthave expanded the range on this chunky sole unit, perfectfor the winter weather.

Gant use rich calf leathers and soft suedes along withcontrast stitching and fur to create a collection of classicstyles, suitable for every occasion.

For men there is a formal part of the collection whichincludes loafers, brogues and Chelsea boots. Known for itsnautical theme in both apparel and footwear, Gant havedeveloped a range of winter boat shoes with contrastingcolours and fur linings to give classic styles a Gant twist.We also see the use of tartan, giving a Christmas feel,along with dark outsoles.
