Omnibus

Noun ~ a volume containing several books previously published separately Oxford Dictionary

Anyone who has seen my CDs and DVDs over the years will know they are a

wonderful collection of data for the classic-era motorcycle enthusiast, all gathered

together in one place. But I have always had some material which did not fit into one

of my big-name collections (BSA, Norton, Triumph) and this material was not enough

on its own to devote a new DVD to.

As my Lucas/Amal and AJS/Matchless collections needed updating and reprinting, I

have taken the decision to combine them into one disk, and add all the extra so-far-

unpublished material I have.

It includes material, but not everything, on Velocette, Vincent, Royal Enfield and

others. Let me be clear on that, the non-LUCAS and non-AJS/MATCHLESS

collections here are not as comprehensive as those on the big-name DVDs, so read the

attached list carefully before you buy, to see if it suits your needs.

And, if you have something I don’t, and would like to let me have a copy to extend

this work, drop me an email at < [email protected] >. I am always looking

for more material to add to make these disks as complete as possible.

A word on piracy. I ask you not to pirate anything on this DVD. Note that the files

herein have been created by me and are my intellectual property.

But the MAIN reason I hope you won’t pirate anything is that, in the end, it would

drive me out of the business of gathering and improving this one-stop collection, and

that would be a loss for all of us.

The best way to use this List is to print a hard copy to read, you will see so much

more than trying to take it in on a screen.

bit of history!!

This is a full-on workshop manual with over 100 pages, not just an owner’s

handbook.

Matchless_Hartley This is an electronic copy of a wonderful out-of-

print book titled “Matchless – once the Largest

British motorcycle manufacturer”, by Peter

Hartley. It is a full history of the marque from 1878

to the very last G80CS in 1969, detailing models, personalities, and the racing history.

This section contains material I could not adequately categorise anywhere else, but

there is some bloody good material here! Engine Number Database

The information in this file was provided to me by “Peter”, and was salvaged by him from a cleanout of the archives of a

country Victoria Police Station.

The information was obviously prepared for, and used, by Victoria’s police many years ago to examine citizens’

motorcycles with a view to checking registration details

against engine numbers. The complete database* covers a very comprehensive range of bikes, listing little-known makes like

Acme right through the alphabet to Zundapp. Some data dates

back to 1926 but the most complete period covered appears to

be from 1946 to 1972.

All the major and many minor British marques are listed!

The data base lists make and models, locations of engine

numbers, and engine number ranges – just the thing for dating that machine of doubtful heritage.

The “location” columns in the charts refer to the 3 diagrams at the end, which were unfortunately of very bad quality and

needed some re-doing on my part. The “originals” I copied

from were themselves second-or-third generation copies of hand-typed pages but it is almost all legible, and it is priceless

stuff.

Contents List ~ The 2nd Edition Lucas Collection

For those who have been attracted and captured by the dark magic of British motorcycles, The Lucas Grimoire is a treasury containing the most arcane of knowledge ~ the darkest secrets of the Prince of Darkness himself, the awe inspiring

LUCAS, together with the equally-mystifying lore of his dire lieutenants AMAL, GIRLING, and SMITHS, plus lesser deities. If you have ever been frustrated by any of these diabolical entities, have spent abject hours in your workshop or by the roadside attempting to propitiate the Gods of British motorcycles– herein are the recipes, spells, and knowledge to tap the electrical, carburation, and suspension secrets of your British motorcycle.

Seriously now, this is a collection of Parts Lists, Workshop Manuals, specification sheets, and other useful data, all together in one compilation for the first time. Such treasures as AMAL settings for almost all British bikes from 1933 to 1966, plus the later Concentrics, and Spare Parts lists for many of the models over the years. The Lucas files cover pretty much everything from 1936 to the 1970’s, with Parts Lists, Maintenance and Repair Manuals and Technical Data sheets, and there are SMITHS Parts Lists too which covers all the chronometric clocks and tachometer and speedo gearboxes from the 1950’s to 1960’s. I have also included data for other proprietary parts fitted to British bikes – Renolds, Girling, Champion. You may have a Factory Parts and Workshop Manual for your motorcycle which covers the bike and its engine/gearbox, but does it list and illustrate all the “proprietary” electrical parts and the carburettors? Well, the “Lucas Grimoires” almost certainly will.

The most outstanding assistance in the compilation of this CD was given by Phil

Pilgrim of Union Jack Motorcycles (Melbourne, Australia), who allowed me to copy his huge collection of Amal, Lucas, and Smiths lore. Please repay his dedication by buying your Triumph parts from Union Jack Motorcycles in Melbourne, Australia.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PRINTING

I have found that a very few customers have had trouble printing some of the pages on some of these files, where they either do not print at all or come out as “mirror images”. This is apparently caused by some sort of conflict with some HP drivers. You can fix it by sending your files to your printer as “images”. Or, obtain the latest printer drivers and Acrobat Reader off the net. 99.9% of customers have not encountered the

problem, however. Also note, some of the pages copied were not in the best of condition, and some pages may not be absolutely perpendicular to the page edges. Sorry, can’t always be helped! My FIRST consideration is NOT to damage the old books any more than they may be already, especially as I have only borrowed them. The information therein is still OK.

from a New South Wales company, KTT Services, which specialised in

rebuilding Smiths instruments. As far as

I can tell the company has ceased trading, but the information in the pages

are very interesting, showing lots of

different models and parts. There is also

some correspondence between KTT and

Union Jack Motorcycles which sheds

light on essential maintenance needed to

keep your Smiths clock happy.
