Another birthday for me has passed, along with two anniversaries, one with my wife, Ann, the other with Olive Branch. I had my first surprise birthday party in probably 40 years, celebrated 16 years of marriage, and 9 years serving this congregation. I received many thoughtful cards, spoken congratulations, and special gifts, including a wonderful food basket from CWF with a note of a gift to the Priscilla & Timothy Fund, and a very nice surprise gift from the congregation. All in all, it was a wonderful month! Thank you to all who helped make it that way! Perhaps we need time markers such as birthdays and anniversaries to remind us to give thanks, to God for the gift of time, and to the people who make our life journey meaningful. My life and ministry have been filled with individuals who have encouraged and helped me along the way. Without them, I have no clue where I would be today. I believe God puts the right people in our lives at just the time we need them. They have been there in our past, and they will be there in our future. After all, none of us know what the future holds. Deep down, we all have a certain level of fear about the future. Which is why I find comfort in Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. It is my belief that God uses people of faith in bringing about a future and a hope. I have certainly been on the receiving end of their presence. Your life is no different. We can all point to key men and women who have said just the right thing at the time we most needed to hear it; men and women who lifted us and told us that we were of value and that God has a purpose for us. They helped guide our paths. So be it a birthday or an anniversary, at markers such as these, it is good to reflect and give thanks for God’s plans for our lives, and the people God uses to accomplish this task. I thank God for my family, and for my church family. I thank you for your friendships, your presence, and your care. I thank you for the privilege of being your pastor. May the Lord of time continue to bless us and the ministry of Olive Branch! Blessings and Thanks, ~Pastor Richard SPECIAL CONGREGATION MEETING The congregation met on July 28 to consider the renovation and updating of the Old Fellowship Hall addition to the sanctuary, as well as an update of wiring in that area. The project was approved. Watch for changes coming! CWF NEWS CWF TUESDAY MORNING CIRCLE The Tuesday Circle met at Interlude July 9, 2019, with thirteen present. As always, we began with wonderful food, made by the best chefs around. Donna made a few announcements, before Elaine started her lesson on another Disciple, this one being Nathaniel Bartholomew, a very interesting man. The next disciple will be Thomas at our August meet.

THANKS

As I write this another July is about to end.

It is my belief that God uses people of faith in bringing about a future and a hope. I have certainly been on the receiving end of their presence.

Your life is no different. We can all point to key men and women who have said just the right thing at the time we most needed to hear it; men and women

who lifted us and told us that we were of value and that God has a purpose for us.

FOOD SHARING PROGRAM UPDATE

Our neighbors who face food insecurity are sometimes faced with the difficult choices of choosing between

buying food or paying for critical healthcare. Your food donations make this choice less of a burden to our

neighbors, who daily face food insecurity. Your decision to

contribute makes a positive difference in their complex circumstances. Grateful for your caring, supportive spirit!

~Will & Jane Hatcher

OBCC TRANSPORTATION MINISTRY: wants volunteers to provide rides to some of our members who are unable to drive themselves to worship services, nearby appointments, and/or Bible Study sessions at church. Please consider serving as a volunteer driver! Contact Robbie Robertson to volunteer (757-707-3944; [email protected]).

Need a ride? Please contact Robbie Robertson.

If you can help to develop van policy/procedures, please let Pastor Richard know.

OUR CHURCH VAN IS IN USE!! There are still some details to take care of. We need some volunteers to make that happen. If you would be a part of our van ministry, please let Pastor Richard or the church office know. Ways to be of help: develop ride & driver policies, van maintenance (monitor and execute), coordinate scheduling, driver (clean driver record required).

WORLD OUTREACH NEWS: THE HOT SUMMER BREAK New giving opportunities will come up later in the year. In the meantime, thank you for your always-dependable generosity!!

In His Name & Blessing ~Sheila Yeatts

ALZHEIMER’S TEAM KICK-OFF SET: for Wednesday, August 14. Join in for a light supper and movie in the New Fellowship Hall at 6 PM. Dessert donations (only) are gratefully accepted. All other supper food will be provided. The movie is I’ll Be Me, the story of Glenn Campbell’s fight with this disease. Donation requested: $5/person to support Alzheimer’s.

NEW MINISTRY STARTING: We all need a little help with something at times, and what a blessing it is when we can provide that help. Since many hands make light work, we are searching for individuals willing to volunteer some time and energy. We would like to start a ministry called Our Hands at Work. The purpose is to provide assistance to our church families that need simple, basic assistance performing tasks around their homes. These might include tasks like light bulb changes, light yard work, light home repairs or painting, donation pick up and drop off. We would like to gather a pool of individuals who could provide such help.

We ask that you prayerfully consider donating some of your time and talents to this. Please contact Janet Neal (804-824-4317) or Patty Barker (757-291-3797) with your questions or willingness to volunteer. Pease leave a message with your name and number and we will return your call. Thank you again for your time and consideration. There will be more to come.

MOVIE NIGHT RETURNS Movie night is on again! Hopefully, the rain that messed up last year’s events will stay away. The first movie night was June 15. Other dates will be announced in the bulletins.

~Abby Matschke

OUR DAY OUT Our July gathering was stupendous! The session included a picnic feast, provided by Sheila Yeatts. She really outdid herself with everything you can think of that is picnic food. We had loads of fun with singing, crafts, and, of course, Bingo.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

SUSAN SAYS….. Is Diabetes truth vs myth? Part I…the truths.

TRUTHS: Type 2 diabetes affects 90% of diabetics, causing these realities: ►Reoccurring infections (the immune system of a diabetic is compromised) ►Increased urination (the kidneys are overactive removing glucose) ►Increased appetite (rollercoaster effect of high and low blood sugars) ►Unquenchable thirst (increased urination) ►Exhaustion (highs and lows of blood sugars) ►Sudden weight loss (unregulated hormone levels prevent blood sugar getting into our cells to give us energy) ►Mood Swings (roller coaster emotions with highs & lows of blood sugar) ►Delayed Healing (Decreased blood flow) ►Numb fingers and toes (excessive glucose causes neuropathy) ►Eye vision problems (when blood sugar drops, vision becomes blurry & light sensitive, floaters can appear).

Your doctor needs to check your blood sugar and evaluate your particular levels. If you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you will check your blood sugars at home.

It is advisable to see a nutritionist. Diabetic diets can seem complicated at first, and many diabetics don’t follow the diet, thinking it too complex. Despite having to learn a new way to eat, it is very important to follow your diet, take medicine as directed, see a nutritionist, and follow up with your doctor as needed.

Next month I share the myths of diabetes. Please let me know if there is a topic you would like me to write about or discuss on a Wednesday night. I am really excited about this new role, and my prayer is to help our church in ways we didn’t even think about. My prayer is for everyone to have a blessed month.

Thank you! ~Susan Rinehart, RN, Parish Nurse
