Adrian became a teacher in 1978 southern secondary colleges. A couple of years were spent in the USA in blue collar jobs. After his return there was a stint in the State Training Authority in 1994 and self-employment as a consultant.on the Soldiers Memorial Avenue. Originally planted between 1918 and 1926 to commemorate those who had died in the Great War.

For the last 14 years, Adrian has researched the history of the Avenue and the soldiers commemorated in it. He led the drafting of the Avenue management plan with the Hobart City Council and arranged numerous ceremonies of dedication along the Avenue, personally drafting over 350 of the plaque texts and supervising the production of plaques through foundries.

Bernard (Bernie) Lewis Geard (SVC 1928-33)Born in 1917, Bernie came to St Virgil’s as a boarder in the late 1920s from the farming and hop growing district of Lachlan, near New Norfolk.

Post school he spent a brief period training to become a Christian Brother before serving his country in the AIF during WW2. He went on to make his name in the hotel business initially and later started his own real estate business in 1963.

Whilst engaged in the real estate business, Bernie became a very public figure as he featured on radio 7HO each morning at 7.45 am with John (Locko) Loughlin. Other than flogging housing deals, Bernie took this opportunity to promote the College in numerous ways.

Bernie loved his sport and the associated camaraderie. After leaving the College he played football for New Norfolk and during the 60s and 70’s he was Captain and President of the OV football and cricket clubs.

His contributions to the Old Virgilians Association were considerable as he initially served on its committee for five years before taking on the presidency for a further six (1966-71).

Bernie retired to the Gold Coast in 1972 and passed away in 1978.

A number of successful reunions were held in 2015 with year groups from 1955, 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2005 gathering at venues around Hobart to reminiss about their glory days at St Virgil’s College. The OVA also conducted a highly successful Melbourne Reunion in October which was attended by 40 Old Virgilians. It is hoped that this will be a highly anticipated annual event.

Class of 1955 ReunionOn the weekend of November 6-8 2015, the Class of 1955 gathered in Hobart. Many had travelled long distances including Pat Dwyer (WA), David Hawkes (Brisbane), and Dennis Sainsbury (Sydney) as well as a number from Melbourne and the north west coast. Sixty years ago, the Year 11 and 12 students had shared classes and so in all reunions held since graduation, the year groups above and below have been included. 34 ‘old boys’ attended the reunion weekend. The weekend commenced with lawn bowls at Sandy Bay. After expert coaching from Darrell Patmore, the group hit the greens, with spirited competition ensuing. A beautiful midday lunch at the club house closed off this event.

At 5pm we gathered at ‘our St Virgil’s’ on the hill where we were given a tour by GYC Principal Mrs Bobby Court. Memories had not dimmed as we shared boarding and ‘day rat’ stories and the rivalry was re-ignited! Mass in the College Chapel followed celebrated by Emeritus Archbishop Adrian Doyle

and concelebrated with Fr Graham Howard, both of whom were from the Class of 1954. Jim Kelly was the altar server. The Mass was very musical with the many hymns and responses sung beautifully in the choral tradition of Navvy (Br JC Stevens). Archbishop Adrian delivered a beautiful homily reflecting upon the 60 years since we left the College. The Class of 55 is very appreciative of his considered and thought provoking reminiscences.

Dinner at the Royal Hobart Yacht Club followed with David Hawkes proposing a toast to the College, recognising the role it had played in nurturing and developing all the young men who had passed through its gates. A response was provided by current Principal Mr Damian Messer who outlined exciting developments planned for the coming decade. A beautiful 60th anniversary cake, encircled by an original SVC hat band and badge and featuring a colour photo in icing of the Barrack St campus was created by Geoff Doolan’s wife Kate and was a wonderful centre piece for the dinner. Archbishop Adrian and Chris Smallbane provided the musical entertainment not he night which was capped off by the singing of the traditional ‘The Egg Song’, led expertly by Brian Doyle, Greg Hanlon, Chris Smallbane and Martin Healy.

Saturday commenced at the New Town Bay Rowing Centre, a wonderful facility used by the College and other schools such as St Mary’s and GYC as well as UTAS and the Buckingham Rowing Club.

4. 1965 Reunion - Phil Hope, Harry Linnell, Tim McCarthy, Tony Coen

This was followed by a family BBQ at Tolosa Park where it was great to share the day with our wives and friends.

Sunday commenced at Austins Ferry where Damian Messer provided a tour of the St Virgil’s College senior campus. Many of us were joined by children and grandchildren, many of whom were also Virgilians. The recent additions to the facility are very impressive and is was reassuring to know that the College continues to honour and build upon our traditions and that it is in such good hands. Thank you Damian and staff.

The weekend finished with a visit to Norske Skog Mill and lunch at the gracious, colonial ’Tynwald at New Norfolk. We said our farewells at the luncheon and committed to keeping in contact and God-willing re-assembling at the 2020 reunion. Sincere thanks to the reunion coordinators Roger Smart and Geoff and Kate Doolan and helpers Jim Kelly, Tony Wiss, Bernard Gillon and Martin Healy.

Footnote: The Class of 1955 was deeply saddened by the recent passing of Bernard Gillon. A wonderful man, a great exemplar of our faith and the values of St Virgil’s College and a special friend to so many. May he rest in peace.

A View to the Pastpianist at an early age, starting playing in the hotels and clubs of Hobart when he was just 15 years of age. He was a sportsman of some note as an amateur sprinter and then as a footballer with the Hobart Tigers from 1954 to 1957. He played for the club’s first grade team and was selected to play in a special match against the Hawthorn VFL Football Club, playing on the wing.

In 1954 he was ‘called up’ as a National Serviceman, attending training at the Brighton Military camp and earning the rank of Sergeant. In 1957 he moved from Hobart to Sydney with the Tourist Bureau, continuing to play football and coaching with Sydney Navy and Western Suburbs. He immediately became immersed in the Sydney music scene and not long after leaving Tasmania he appeared on the popular entertainment radio show of the day, Terry Dear’s Australian Amateur Hour, playing his own composition, Combination Boogy.

Later he established a formidable reputation in the club entreatment industry backing some of the biggest names in Australian showbiz in the 60s 70s and 80s. Renowned Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly (A CB boy from Rostrevor College in Adelaide) was at one stage a member of his group.

Barry married Mary Burfitt in 1959 and four children followed: Therese, Michael, David and Mark. Taking an interest in swimming firstly with his children, he was invited by the Auburn swim coach and later renowned Australian coach, Don Talbot, to be his assistant. He oversaw the careers of a number of leading Australian swimmers.

He joined Ansett Airways in the 1970s and was with that company for nearly 25

years. A family tragedy led to the end of his marriage and in later years met partner Judy Thomas. He never lost his love for Tasmania and he and Judy purchased a property at St Helen’s. They divided their time between Tasmania in the summer and Shell Harbour in NSW in the winter.

A keen fisherman, he loved the fishing life and using the skills he learned as a boy growing up in West Hobart and holidaying with grand parents in Oatlands.

Barry died at St Helen’s after a long illness, stoically supported by Judy.

He is survived by his siblings Lesley Smith, Margaret Warburton and Gerard Thompson (former SVC student), and his

children. His last wish was to be buried with his mother, Esma Thompson, at Millington’s Kingston Cemetery.

His funeral was held at St Mary’s Cathedral on Thursday, February 4.

Reg Mahony What an amazing performance from this former student!

Australian sprint champion Tim Banner was the drawcard for the 1933 Burnie Carnival which was again run over two days. Banner did not disappoint the crowd. On the first day he ran the 220 yards off 4 yards in 21.8 seconds. (two yards outside evens) into a head wind to win comfortably.

On New Year’s Day, Banner ran through to the final of the Gift running his semi-final in 12.6 seconds, off two yards, regarded by some as the best run ever witnessed on the Burnie Sheffield track. But the champion encountered Tasmania’s top sprinter, Reg Mahony (Hobart) at his best in the final. Mahoney ran superbly off 11.5 yards, inches in front of L.W.Kelly (Launceston) and Banner.

In fact, Mahony had a brilliant day. He won the Gift, the Quarter Mile (440 yards) and surprised officials and spectators by beating Banner in the 75 yard sprint-particularly after hard runs in his heat, semi-final of the Gift and the Quarter. Mahony ran second to Banner in the 100 and 130 yard invitation sprints.

Between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. he raced over 2015 yards, covering the Gift distance four times, the 220 and the 440 twice and the 100 and the 75 once. It was a unique record.

As part of an athletics display for the History Centre Jacob Despard (SVC 2010-2013) has kindly loaned his Burnie Gift winner’s sash. Jacob won the Burnie Gift in 2013. The following year he won the Devonport Gift and came an extremely close second in the Burnie Gift. The same year he represented Australia in the Worlds Athletics Championships in the USA.

Michael Hill (SVC 1958-66) retired at the end of November after a stellar career in the Tasmanian judicial system. Having graduated in Law in 1970, Michael was admitted to the bar in 1972. Michael was appointed the first Small Claims Magistrate for Tasmania in August 1985. He was appointed a Magistrate in 1988; Deputy Chief Magistrate in 1996 and Chief Magistrate in 2009.

Michael’s younger brother, Tim Hill (SVC 1960-70), was also a magistrate. He presided over cases in northern Tasmania for 22 years. Sadly Tim passed away in March this year. Attorney-General Vanessa Goodwin paid tribute to Mr Hill, saying he was ‘a man with integrity, a calm temperament and sound judgement’. Michael’s son, Julian (SVC 1991-94), also a law graduate from UTAS, is currently working in Germany.

In the previous edition it was reported that Par Avion Managing Director, Shannon Wells (SVC 1994-97) won the ‘Best Major Tour and Transport Operator Award at the Australian Tourism Awards. Accolades continue to come his way ! At the Tasmanian Tourism Awards in November, Shannon collected the Premier’s Young Achiever Award and his business the Major Tour and Transport Operators award.

Congratulations to Mitch McPherson (SVC 2000-03) (above) who was awarded the Pride of Australia Medal for Community Service (State division) in October. Mitch established SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY programme after his younger brother Ty took his own life in 2013. It is registered not for profit charity that works to help prevent suicide by spreading the message that nothing is so bad that you can’t talk about it. In April 2016 Mitch won the St Luke’s Health Healthier Community Award and at the Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards he was adjudged the Tasmanian Young Achiever of the Year from among the eight category winners.

One of Mitch’s close friends from school days, Jack Riewoldt (SVC 2001-04) has been a great supporter of ‘Stay ChatTY’ since its inception. Following the death of his cousin Maddie, Jack has also become a key supporter of the Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision which was established to help adolescents and young adults suffering from Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes through research and providing support into treatments, prevention and with an aim to finding a cure. Congratulations to Jack on his inclusion in the 2015 All Australian AFL

Team. Jack was also selected in the squad to tour Ireland but had to withdraw to have shoulder surgery during the off-season. The only other OV ‘All Australian’ was Don Gale in 1958. Barry Strange who attended St Peter’s but did not come through St Virgil’s, also gained selection in the 1956 team.

At the same Tasmanian Young Achiever Awards function, Sam Morey (SVC 2000-03), Assistant Principal at St Paul’s Bridgewater, was awarded the Teaching Excellence Award.

Tasmanian Catholic school Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) award recipients for 2015 included Simon Lane (SVC 1999-2002) and Teacher Corpus Christi Catholic School, Bellerive) and Craig Deayton ( SVC 1968-76) and current Principal at Sacred Heart College, New Town).

A number of former students have been the focus in feature articles in the Hobart Mercury. Current Mayor of Glamorgan-Spring Bay Council, Michael Kent AM (SVC 1951-59) has recently published his autobiography entitled Open Slather. Dr Mark Stranger (SVC1971-72) spent many years as a ranger with Forestry Tasmania before a career as an academic at UTAS. The article focused on his purchase of the well-known yacht, Helsal IV on which he and wife Marsha provide short and overnights cruises.

The October 17 Tasweekend supplement of the Hobart Mercury contained a feature story on London-based writer Tadhg (John)Muller who grew up in Hobart, was educated at St Virgil’s (1991-94) and went on to gain a BA with Honours at UTAS. He now lives and writes in southeast London.

(Interestingly, his original name was John but he changed it to something that sounded more Irish to improve his chances of being noticed by publishers!) Regarding his days at the College, Tasweekend quotes Tadhg as saying; “In Tasmania I went to school at St Virgil’s. It’s a Christian Brothers school, so it had a particular ethos, to work with the poor. I’ve always been comfortable with that kind of work. Catholicism has always embraced a wide spectrum of views, and I think the current Pope is talking a lot more sense than most. So I do consider myself to be Catholic as much as anything else-but deeply lapsed”.

Tadhg’s older brother Tom Muller (SVC 1988-93) is also leading an extraordinary life. After completing a BA Hons. at the ANU in Canberra, Tom applied to the Australian Volunteers Abroad and in early 1999 he was sent to Pershawar in Pakistan. He was an aid worker with the Agency Coordinating Body for Afghan Relief (ACBAR ). In that capacity he had to work with the major NGOs and the Taliban Government in Kabul. Tom returned to Australia in early 2001 and worked in Canberra as a policy officer for AFHO (Australian Federation of Homelessness Organisations ). Whilst there he completed a Masters degree in International Law at the ANU. In 2003, Tom now married, returned to Kabul where he worked for the Afghan Research and Evaluation Unit whilst wife Jayne worked for CARE. They spent two years in Kabul and in 2005 went to London where Tom was a policy officer for the Overseas Development Institute. Tom returned to Hobart in 2005 to a position at TasCoss (the Tasmanian Council of Social Services), where shortly after he was appointed the Director. Five years ago they moved to

Melbourne with their two children as Jayne had been appointed to a new position at Oxfam. Initially Tom worked for the Christian Blind Mission but just recently took up an appointment as Director of Policy and Advocacy for Water Aid International.

Dr Stratos Roussos (SVC 1991-94) graduated from UTAS in 2002. In 2008 he undertook a placement in South Sudan with Medicins Sans Frontiers. Since returning to Australia he has spent the majority of his time in Alice Springs as a GP at an Aboriginal Health Clinic. He spends one day a week running a “Bus Mobile Clinic”- an Aboriginal Health Worker and he visit people on outstations up to 100 km out of town and two sessions a week with Headspace (founded by former Australian of the Year-Professor Patrick McGorry) which is predominately a mental health service for young people. Stratos is an accomplished musician and plays several instruments.

Former Supreme Court chief justice, William Cox AC (SVC 1946-7) has been appointed by the Governor, Kate Warner, for a five-year review of the Integrity Review Act.

Dr Rob Chandler is the Quality and Risk Manager with Patties Foods in Melbourne.

CEO of Tassal, Mark Ryan (SVC 1978-64) recently received a prestigious The Richard Pratt Banksia CEO Award recognising his drive to make the Atlantic salmon producer a sustainable operation.

Two other CEO’s often in the news ….

Bernard Dwyer (SVC 1978-80) as of November 2014 has headed the TTline. Previously he was involved in the Tasmanian tourism sector, where over 14

years he worked in various senior management positions with the Federal Group, including nearly nine years as its Director of Tourism. As part of his post school education Bernard attended the Harvard Business School.

Dominic Morgan (1978-84) was the CEO of Tasmanian Ambulance and Health Transport Service from 2009-2016. Dominic’s career began as an Ambulance Officer and then as an intensive care paramedic. Along the way he completed a Master of Business Administration from the Macquarie Graduate School of Management. He recently accepted the position as Chief Executive of the New South Wales Ambulance Service.

Matt Bevilacqua (SVC 2001-2008) (above) became the first Tasmania to win a round of lifesaving’s Ironman series in December 2015.

Lachlan blueberry and raspberry producer Nigel Graham (SVC 1990-94) featured in The Mercury expressing concern over problem getting sufficient pickers to harvest his crop.

Seafood specialist Jono Douglas (SVC 1999-2002) was pictured on the front page of the Mercury advocating a very merry Fishmas!

Greg Geason (SVC 1971-79) has been appointed Chairman of the Parole Board of Tasmania. He has been chairman of Resource Management and Planning Appeals Tribunal, president of the Law Society of Tasmania, member of the Local Government Association of Tasmania standards panel and a member of the University of Tasmania law faculty teaching and learning committee.

Christopher Smyth (SVC 1976-79) is the Executive Director of Human Resources at UTAS. He recently came into prominence as the university spokesperson at the time of police being called onto campuses following online threats. Many might remember Chris and his brother Tony playing football for Sandy Bay. Tony is currently a partner in the Melbourne commercial law firm Carrick Gill Smyth.

Simon Kelleher has recently been appointed Chief Financial Officer of the Carlton Football Club. He had previously been Finance Manager at Crown Casino and Financial Controller at the Victorian Racing Club. Whilst at the College Simon had great success on the track and played football for the Tassie Mariners during his Grade 10 year.

Jack Hale (SVC 2011-2014) continues to grab the headlines with his performances on the track. After anchoring Guilford Young to 2015 SATIS victories, he went on to win the National Under 18 100 metre title, came a close second in the Under 20 title and was runner up in the National senior title over the same distance. On the carnival

circuit he finished third in the Stawell Gift at Easter and second in the New Year’s Day Burnie Gift-in both instance he was off the back mark. He will travel to Poland to compete in the World Junior (Under 20) Athletics Championships in July.

Daniel Coleman has recently gained an apprentice coaching position at Canberra AIS. He was a triple Australian Junior Race walking champion 2006-08. His partner, Stephanie Stigwood is having ongoing success as an international race walker. His older brother, Patrick, was twice runner up in the triple jump at the National Junior titles and like his brother has represented Australia overseas. Patrick is currently Director of Sport at the Launceston Church Grammar School. Mother, Rosemary, is a member of the St Virgil’s College staff and continues to make an outstanding contribution to the College athletics team and to the OVA Saints.

Goalkeeper Alex Cisak was named in a 23-man squad for Australia ahead of two FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Bangladesh and Tajikistan. He plays professional football for English League Two club Leyton Orient and has previously represented the Australia national under-20 team.

After two years with Team Sky, road cyclist Nathan Earle (SVC 2003-04) is making the move to the Pro Continental Drapac Pro Cycling in 2016. Nathan was the runner up in the in the Stan Siejka Classic-the street circuit criterion in Launceston-early December.

Caleb Jewell (SVC 2010-13) Following excellent performances for Premier League side North Hobart, Caleb was selected to play for the Tasmanian Tigers

in the last Sheffield Shield clash for the 2015-16 season against the Redbacks in Adelaide. Tasmanian Tigers Chairman of Selectors Michael Farrell said Jewell fully deserves his chance to debut for the Tasmanian Tigers in the Sheffield Shield clash. “He was Australia’s leading batsman in the Australian Under 19 tour scoring two centuries as well a century in the Futures League tournament. He is in great form and we are looking forward to seeing him take his chance,” Farrell said. Despite a first innings duck, Caleb showed he was more than capable at the level, spending a more time at the wicket in the second dig.

Peter Alexander (above), the 1970 1st XI Cricket Captain recently visited the College to visit his nephew Cameron (SVC 1989-94 and current staff) and to see his name on the Honour Boards. Peter was on a return visit from his home in Scotland where he has lived for the last three decades. He still keeps in contact with a number of his school mates and enjoyed catching up with them in Hobart.

With a bag of seven wickets, fast bowler Hamish Kingston (SVC 2003-06) had a major input into the Tasmanian Shield victory over NSW and was a key member of the South Hobart-Sandy Bay team that won the 2015/2016 Cricket Tasmania Premier League premiership against a Kingborough team that included Old Virgilian Rylie Backhouse (SVC 2010-13).

Mountain bikers Scott Bowden and Ben Bradley (both SVC 2008-11) continue to make their mark at the national level. Scott won the 2015 Under 23 National title and won the open National Mountain bike series. He is a strong contender for selection for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Graeme Rainbow and Bruce Woods College Archivists

One of our functions as Archivists is to support the Old Virgilians Association in researching prospective inductees to the St Virgil’s Heritage Roll of Honour each year. We seek out inspirational achievement stories about former students. These stories are added to the intranet at the College and are accessible to the staff and students and also visitors to the Centenary History Centre at Austins Ferry. They also made available to the OV Committee. Our role is to provide possibilities for potential inductees-and as we are no longer on the committee, we have no say in the actual selection!

Thus far there have been 65 inductees onto the roll (ref. Old Virgilians website). Of these 13 were awarded posthumously and a further five have passed away since their inductions. In addition to the stories of these 65, we have collated stories and images of a further 150 other former students which are on the College’s intranet.

By telling these stories, it is hoped to illustrate to the students, present and future, what their predecessors have been able to achieve and hence inspire them with a confidence and a desire to go forth to strive for excellence through their deeds and words. Furthermore, the aim is to help students understand something of the real but largely undefinable St Virgil’s spirit that has emerged over the century and to aid them in being imbued more deeply with that spirit.

If you feel you have an inspirational achievement story that ought be added to the existing collection, (it might be your own-you are entitled to be proud of your own achievements-hopefully you

are!- or it might be that of someone else that you feel ought be included), please contact Graeme Rainbow at [email protected]

In addition to the aforementioned stories going onto the intranet, we are currently compiling 40 extensive documents each of which will capture a particular facet in word and picture of the story of St Virgil’s. Each of these documents will be easily added to or amended as new information comes to light.

Three documents that we would like some immediate help with relate to:

• Listing of former students who have received civic awards.

• List of former students who have represented Australia overseas in sport.

• Major scholarship winners.

Existing lists are outlined below. Please let Graeme know of any omissions or errors.

There were no Year Books for the period 1952 to 1960 inclusive. If anyone has St Virgil’s related photos (e.g. class, sporting teams) from that period, the College would appreciate obtaining copies. Any photos received would be scanned and returned.
