In June, the one-of-a-kind Last Male Standing Cricket Cup took place again on Ol Pejeta after a one-year hiatus due to the global pandemic. It was absolutely refreshing to see the over 250 attendees enjoy three days of fun and sportsmanship.

The event was first launched in 2015 to create awareness about the northern white rhinos and in particular Sudan - the last male northern white rhino. Year on year it has gained momentum and great interest. We are proud to host this annual event on Ol Pejeta.

12 teams went head to head, including our very own Ol Pejeta Cricket team. After great sportsmanship, The Obuyas and FYCEK took the Rhino Cup Final and Sudan Smash Final respectively. All the funds raised will be donated to Ol Pejeta and the Foundation for Youth Cricket & Education in Kenya.

A BIG thank you to the British Army Training Unit (BATUK) for taking a lead in the logistics of the event!

We wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of so many people around the world. Below, you will find the many ways you can help us achieve our goals and become part of a global conservation community.

VISIT AND ADOPT BARAKABaraka was born in 1994, the first rhino to be born on Ol Pejeta after it became a conservancy. This is perhaps why he received the name he did, for it means ‘blessing’ in swahili. As a young bull, he lost an eye in a fight, and he lived for a few years with just one eye. Then, very sadly, he developed cataracts in the remaining eye, and it was decided that he would be moved to his current enclosure, where we can be sure he is safe and well cared for. Since then, he has met thousands and thousands of people, from local schoolchildren to international dignitaries, all of whom have enjoyed feeding him handfuls of lurcerne, delicious sticks of sugar cane, and sometimes, offering a friendly pat between his ears.Baraka is getting on in years but aside from his blindness, he enjoys robust good health and maintains a hearty appetite. Like many rhinos, he loves nothing more than a good scratch, rubbing up against trees and rolling around in the mud. You may see a few scratches or lesions on his side, but these are nothing to worry about. Contrary to popular belief, a rhino’s skin is actually very thin, and so can tear easily when an itch is roughly scraped against a tree. However, the wounds are not deep and do not require a huge amount of medical attention.

Visit our adoption box next to the Information Centre and become a part of Baraka’s story. You can also adopt him online! Visit our websitefor more information.
