Business Meeting Summaries for June 12th, 2012

T he Rev. Elsie Rhodes brought the invocation which

began with a quotation from Gandhi: “There is more

to life than merely increasing its speed.” The following

meditation is adapted from prayers by Philip Newell

and Brother Roger of Taizé (France): “Glory be to you, O God, for

the rising of the sun, for the rain — yes, even this rain. Glory be

to you for the beauty and gifts of this day...But, where the glisten-

ing is lost sight of, where life’s colors are dulled, and the human

soul grows hard, we pray for grace this day, we pray for soften-

ing graces. Embolden us to bring peace where there are opposi-

tions, and may a reflection of your compassion become visible by

the lives we lead.” Amen.”

President Charles doubled as Sergeant-at-Arms. Anne Geddes-

Atwell was hosting her partner Jim Atwell. The accompanist and

five young singing artists from the Glimmerglass Opera were

guests of Linda Jackson were recognized to be introduced later

as they performed.

David Vaules was our songmeister and we opened with Take

Me Out to The Ball Game (Buy me some peanuts and Cracker

Jack®) and finished with a tribute to the Music Man — 76 Trom-

bones (Double bell euphoniums and big bassoons).

President Charles spoke once again about the Dreams Park um-

pire, a Rotarian, who is looking for housing in the area for June

22-28.

Members were advised that their annual dues are $125, but if

paid prior to July 17, $110. After July 17th, penalties may accrue

to the sum of $150 until October 31. Of course, with payment of

dues, comes a free year’s subscription to The Oil Can.

The sum of $24 is the amount that should be found in your

EREY (Every Rotarian/Every Year) envelopes.

John Ramsey revealed the results of the club’s informal golf out-

ing/tournament played on the Leatherstocking Course on Tues-

day afternoon, June 5. The members of the winning foursome

were Bill Glockler, Ray Holohan, Chuck Newman, and Mike

Otis.

There will be no regular meeting on Tuesday of next week (June

26) in light of the scheduling of our Pass The Gavel Annual Meet-

ing on Thursday, June 28th, at the Otesaga. The tariff for the

event has been set at $50 per person.

President Charles advised that Mary Livermore is scheduled

for induction as a new member this week, our fifth new member

of the current 2011-2012 Rotary year.

The next edition of The Oil Can will appear as Vol. 90, No. 1, as

the 2012-2013 Rotary year commences on Tuesday, July 3rd, with

incoming club president Ralph Snell at the helm. The next sched-

uled board meeting will take place at the Episcopal Church on

July 9th at 5 p.m. A budget for the 2012-2013 Rotary

year was approved at a recent board meeting.

Just before it was time to collect our happy dollars

President Charles announced that our friend and Rota-

ry colleague Jeff Woeppel had found it necessary to

resign from membership. Jeff, who first joined with this

club in March, 1982, more than 30 years ago, served a

term as club president in the late 1980s and over the

years has been a stalwart among our senior leadership,

contributing to our club’s programs and fundraisers in

a variety of ways. He also, for many years, has enjoyed

the distinction of being the tallest Rotarian in this club.

We wish Jeff the best, and perhaps he will return in

time to our fold.

President Charles then called for a volunteer to collect

happy dollars, and in looking around the room he

spotted the upraised hand of Vicki Gates. However, as

it turned out, Vicki was not volunteering to collect hap-

py, but simply indicating to the Rev. Elsie Rhodes, seat-

ed at her table, just how tall the aforesaid Jeff Woeppel

was. Elsie, of course, has never met Jeff. But having ex-

plained the purpose of her upraised hand Vicki said she

would be pleased to collect happy dollars, and so it

was.

Ted Peters spoke of the anniversary of the great naval

battle at Midway in the Pacific Ocean in WWII and add-

ed that he was celebrating a 67th wedding anniversary.

Doug Geertgens said he had yet to encounter the busi-

ness end of a mosquito in Otsego County, but he had

just returned from a mission trip in Alaska along the

Yukon River where the pests were plentiful and vora-

cious. For a week or more Doug battled the Anopheles

while working on maintenance tasks at a camp for Eski-

mo children. For recreation, there was mountain climb-

ing amidst spectacular scenery Doug described as

“beautiful desolation.”

Chuck Carrier reported that his eldest granddaughter

had landed a great job in Boston. Diana Nicols-

DiLorenzo entered a plea for volunteers to assist with

the workings of our July 4th concession at Lake Front

Park. Ralph Snell said that his daughter had been in

London England where she saw Queen Elizabeth dur-

ing the recent Jubilee celebrations. Jim Atwell reported

that since his spouse Anne has become Otsego Town

Supervisor, he has been less supervised than before.

Ben Novellano was celebrating a warning ticket from

the Cooperstown police. Several of our number wel-

comed back our treasurer, Angie Erway, who reported

that she has been tending to the needs of a handsome

little man/baby at home. Tom Heitz, Editor
