Flexible Endoscopy for Surgeons
Needs Assessment: Many general surgeons will encounter patients with common medical conditions of esophageal disorders and colorectal cancers. Innovative approaches to the treatment of these endoscopic medical conditions are in demand of the general surgeon. The course will familiarize participants with endoscopy procedures by providing didactic lectures, panel discussions, and a hands-on activity.
Course Overview: This one day course is designed for general surgeons whom are interested in endoscopy treatment procedures for common medical conditions of esophageal disorders and colorectal cancers. The course will review the basic principles of endoscopy, operative procedures and techniques, and safe patient management.
Objectives:Completion of this course will enable participants to:
1. Review the basic principles for upper and lower endoscopy.
2. Identify and discuss surgical management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
3. Identify endoscopic therapies for the treatment of Barrett’s and early esophageal cancer.
4. Identify techniques and outcomes for Per-Oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM).
5. Identify techniques and outcomes for Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE).
6. Identify safe and effective stenting for colorectal cancers.
