Feb. 3, 2019 – Fort Worth, Texas
tailgateTALK By Jack Chastain, Editor
What an incredible two months we have ex-perienced this past September and October.
After recording a record high rainfall in February to a record dry period from March
through August, we have now recorded all time record high rainfall for both September and October. Although too late for maximum grass production, relief from the drought is most beneficial. Sale results of the production sales held this month have been solid yet softer than pre-vious years as shown in the reports listed elsewhere in this issue. Hereford cattle continue to gain ground in the overall beef industry. It is very rewarding to hear com-ments from some of the buyers saying that they are buy-ing Herefords because their Hereford sired calves are out performing their calves sired by other breeds of bulls. They are talking both higher percent calf crop as well as heavier calves at weaning. THA members should be proud of the product you are producing but never rest, as we need to continue to improve the seedstock we provide to the industry.
I wish to single out and thank the consignors to our eighth annual Fall Classic Sale in Buffalo. The quality of our offering was the best ever and sale prices reflected this. This is an event for members of THA. We hope to grow this sale more and more each year. Please consider saving a top bull or female for next years event.
Consignments are coming in nicely for both the Cow-town Invitational Sale and the Hereford Replacement fe-male sale, both to be held on Sunday, February 3, 2019. We again will have the Heritage pen of heifers (our eigh-teenth year). Every THA member is most grateful to the consignors of this pen, as this event has been most ben-eficial to the budget of THA. We plan to provide the high placing junior heifer scholarship in the open show at Fort Worth and again at San Antonio. Contributions to both are greatly needed and appreciated.
Another item of interest is that we plan to have a silent auction at our annual meeting and social and need a few quality items. If you have something to contribute, please notify the THA office prior to the meeting. Please do so early enough to allow us to prepare a presentation for it. The meeting will be Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Bo-tanical Gardens in Fort Worth.
I urge all members to stay in touch with the officers of this organization. We have a few new projects in place and plans for many more. We welcome ideas and sugges-tions from members as to what they would like this orga-nization to be doing.
November is a month we should give thanks for the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us. We are truly blessed to work with Hereford cattle and the fine people associated with them. ★
