TIME, TIME, TIME…to exercise?

By: Jane Hamann, ACE-certified personal trainer

After talking with numerous people, it is clear that the number one reason people do not exercise is time. Most people just don’t have it. With today’s busy schedules, how does one find the time to exercise?

What I tell people is, you do not need to devote hours upon hours to exercise. You can get a great workout in 20-30 minutes, and you don’t even need to go to the gym. With a mat and some dumb bells, you can workout quickly and easily anywhere. Actually, you don’t even need that much equip-ment. You have the best equipment at your fingertips, literally, your own body. You would be amazed at the workout you can get just using your body weight.

Next time you have 20 minutes, and don’t tell me you can’t find 20 minutes, whether you are at home or in the office, try the following workout. Do it a couple times a week. Complete each section twice before mov-ing on to the next. Your pace should be steady and controlled. If you are new to exercise, take your time and go slowly.

Two minutes of jogging

15 Push Ups – regular or modified (If floor push ups are too difficult, try doing the push ups against the wall and work your way to the floor).

15 Tricep Dips from a sturdy chair or bench

30 seconds of jumping jacks

15 lunges on each leg

May/June 2010

The time and energy spent negotiating the purchase of a business is significant. Early on in the process, you should seek advice from a circle of professionals, including an accountant, lawyer, banker and/or financial con-sultant. With so many things to consider when buying a business the knowledge of your team will help keep you focused on those elements that are most important.

Here are just some of those important issues:

The What:

What is the purchase price?

What are you getting for the price?

How was the purchase price determined?

How was the value determined of the assets being purchased?

What portion of the purchase price is being allocated for goodwill? The Why:

Why is the business being sold?

How long has the company been in business? The How:

How diversified is the customer base?

How is the cash flow of the business?

Have you been able to obtain the last three year’s tax returns/financial statements for the business that you are looking to purchase?

Has the company’s financial information been reviewed by your accountant?

How are the existing credit relationships with vendors?

Who are the key employees and are they willing to stay on with you?

So, remember to get these questions answered and always surround yourself with the right team, so you can start your business journey off on the right track!

The old adage—the best defense is a good offense—also applies to crisis planning. As a small business owner, you have to ask yourself some difficult ques-tions about potential disasters: What if the “worst” did happen? How would it affect my business, my family, and my employees? Would we survive if the business were shut down for weeks, months, or perhaps the entire revenue season? The possibilities may not be pleasant to think about. But a proactive approach to managing potential disasters may help mitigate the effects on your business, and lessen the time and resources necessary to resume normal operations. Here are some tips for developing a crisis management strategy for your business: Begin by identifying potential hazards. Every part of the country is susceptible to some kind of natural disaster hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, and ice storms, to name but a few. Likewise, man-made disasters such as oil or chemical spills, fires, and civil unrest can occur almost everywhere. The fact that your area has not experienced such events is no guarantee that they cannot or will not happen eventually, and with little or no warning.

Develop contingency plans to continue operations if your office, plant, or store is unusable. Assess the feasibility of operating out of your home or a nearby storefront, and what may be necessary to quickly transport critical items such as computers, inventory, and equipment. It may also be helpful to maintain a secure off-site inventory of any hard-to-replace parts or supplies.

Take steps to ensure the safety of employees and customers. Every business should have an evacuation plan, even if you lease the space. Make sure that telephone numbers for an emergency are clearly posted, and that you have updated emergency contacts and essential medical information for all employees. Training staff members in CPR and first aid is also a worthwhile investment for any business.

Perform a safety inventory of your business location. Ordinary items could cause problems, especially anything that can move, fall, break, or cause a fire. Make sure shelves are securely fastened, and that large, heavy objects are placed near the floor. Store important documents, back-up copies of computer records and software, and other vital information in a safe, fireproof container. Clean and test smoke detectors regularly, and change the batteries at least once a year.

Have proper emergency equipment ready and accessible. You should have well-stocked first-aid kits, fire extinguishers, and fully charged batteries for things like portable telephones. If you have portable generators for emergency power, make sure that the fuel is fresh and safely stored to prevent possi-ble fires. For locations that are vulnerable to recurring events such as hurricanes, maintaining a supply of appropriate materials such as plywood to protect large windows will free you from scrambling for these hard-to-find items at the last minute.

Review your business insurance coverage and make updates where necessary. At a minimum, your coverage should be enough to get your business back

in operation, and cover the replacement cost of vital facilities. Also know what your insurance does not cover. For example, most general casualty policies do not cover flood damage, and they may require riders for windstorms, sewer backups, or earth movement. Business interruption insurance will assist with ongoing expenses during a forced shutdown, and help you meet payrolls, pay vendors, and purchase inventory until you return to full operation.

etsy Jacaruso grew up in Rhine-beck. She received her BFA with honors at The Pratt Institute of Art and Design, NYC. In 2005 Betsy

was awarded the Individual Artist “Executives Arts Award” from the

Dutchess County Council for the Arts. Although she is best known for large water-color botanicals Betsy also has a passion for painting landscapes and still life. Her method of applying color washes, combined with strong skills in composition and draftsmanship, gives her work a unique and personal style. Extensive travels through-out the Hudson Valley, the Southwest, Burgundy and Tuscany have broadened her world, allowing her to draw visual inspiration from some of the most beautiful settings in the world while clarifying her own technical expertise in her chosen medium.

Betsy has a studio and gallery in Red Hook, NY. Her students find her mastery invaluable in the process of learning the complexities of painting watercolor. Her work has been featured in both regional and interna-tional exhibitions and is represented in private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.

From a review by Dakota Lane in the Woodstock Times-“Betsy’s paintings of Rhinebeck farms and river views are idyllic without being sentimental, depicting simple rhythms of growth and a peaceful interconnectedness between the manmade and the organic.”

Make A Difference In The Life of a Cancer Patient. Make A Difference In Your Community.

The American Cancer Society’s Road to Recovery Program provides transportation to and from treat-ment for those who need transportation. Volunteer drivers donate their time and the use of their cars so that patients can receive the life-saving treatment that they need. Right now, there is a severe shortage of volunteer drivers in our area. Volunteering is easy; all that is required is a valid driver’s license, and a safe and reliable vehicle. Volunteers must be in good health and possess a good driving history. To learn more about this important program and how you can make a cancer patient’s treatment experience just a little easier, please call 1-800-227-2345. Thank you.
