CONGRESSMAN TIM MURPHY VISITS OUR CLUB

U.S. Congressman Tim Murphy took time from his busy campaign schedule to speak with the 40-plus members present at the Octo-ber meeting. The congressman repre-sents the 18th dis-trict, which includes large portions of Al-legheny and Wash-ington counties, where most of our members reside. With the Congressman being an NRA member and pro Second Amendment and visiting a sportsmen’s club, one would expect most of the discussion would be about gun legislation and the recent Supreme Court decision in that area. However, the audience also questioned Mr. Murphy on such diverse topics as health care reform, economic bailout, gas and oil en-ergy implications, and union shop require-ments. Mr. Murphy provided solid, well-supported answers on these issues. Congressman Murphy closed with the re-minder that he’s always open to feedback since he’s only a temporary employee who has to go back and answer to his bosses every two years. That’s us. (Ed. Note: Congressman Murphy won reelection.)

target holders to provide a lower firing path. ● The Board has modified its position on the closing of the lower pistol range. For the pre-sent, the range is still closed to use by the general membership. However, it will be avail-able for use in controlled events, such as fire-arms education courses by the NRA or Boy Scouts. Potential controlled-event users need to contact Bruce Ungar, Executive Range Officer, for permission and necessary control requirements. Bruce can be reached at (412)343-2256. ● A surprising number of members have contacted the membership chair about not getting any email notices. Then we find out they changed their email address and forgot to let us know. In case you didn’t notice it in the dues reminder on the right, we need you to include your e-mail address on your pay-ment check so we can update our database for notifying you of newsletter postings and special alerts. In fact, if you change your email address anytime throughout the year, let any of the board members know. ● For those of you who think it’s hard to find our club, these were the directions to get to Green Valley Club for last month’s Pittsburgh and Suburban Rifle League match. From the off-ramp turn left and go under 60. You'll travel parallel to the Ohio River, and you'll pass a cou-ple of bars and a couple of factories and go over a little bridge. After about 2 - 2 1/2 miles, as you're going up a hill, there will be a left turn with a small sign for Green Valley (I think this is Bauer Road). At the top of the hill you'll come to a "T". Make a right turn. Just past the Potter Township Municipal building turn left at the sign that says "Fishpot Road." Go down the hill and make a right turn onto Fishpot. This is a very twisty road. As you come to the bottom of the hill there will be a VERY sharp left turn into the Green Val-ley Sportsmen's Club. If you miss the turn, just over the creek is a little parking lot on the left where you can most likely turn around. This is just part of the charm of shooting in the PSRL.

● At the last general meeting, 15 sports men and women applied for membership. That number included 12 adults and 3 juniors. Those 3 juniors were sons of 2 of the adults. There aren’t many better ways to spend qual-ity time with your children and at the same time continue the outdoor legacy.

2009 DUES NEWS It’s never too early to start collecting dues for next year. Basic dues are the same. REMINDERS: √ You will not be getting back a sepa-rate membership card or year sticker. Your gate card is now your membership identification card. THE STORY OF THE CARBINE REFLECTS THE HISTORY OF AMERICA From the Civil War to the present, the carbine played an important part in the development of America. The team of Dave Willard, Ell Vines, Chuck Augenstein, and Mike Ligman gave a thorough look at that historic, highly adaptive weapon at the October meeting. They cov-ered too much material to report here, but some interesting points follow. ■ The difference in weapon terminology is the length—a musket is 56 inches, a rifle 48, and a carbine 39. ■ At the beginning of the Civil War black pow-der firearms were still being used ■ It wasn’t until after the Civil War that self-contained rounds were developed. ■ The .58 caliber was designed to knock a man off horseback at 600 yards. ■ Modifications were made to meet combat needs—reducing weight and length for ease of loading and firing, whether on horseback, in the jungles or desserts, or in close quarters. ■ There were 6,600,000 M-1’s produced be-tween 1941 and 1945. ■ 1943 was the only year for steel case ammo ■ Pistols did not provide enough fire power in Iraq, so Lt. Colonels and NCO’s on down were issued M-4’s. If you need to know more, ask the experts.

ANNUAL MEETING IN NOVEMBER Nominations Made for Board Vacancies John Tupta headed the Nominating Commit-tee that included Dave Faust, Bob Kirsopp, Bill Phillips, and Cliff McCoy. The committee recommended the following members as nominees for the five three-year terms that are open on the DMSC Board of Directors this year: George Taylor, George Dietz, Miles Ford, Bruce Ungar, and Doug Gawronski. As provided for in the club constitution and by-laws, at each annual meeting, to be held in November, five directors shall be elected to a full term of three years. The current nominees are the incumbents. However, the constitution also provides that other voting members may be nominated for directors by any voting member in good standing at the annual meeting. Final selec-tion will be determined by the votes of the members present.

DMSC STREAK STOPPED BY FRAZIER-SIMPLEX

Against Green Valley, Amy Smith again led the charge with a 298, after a long drive all

the way from Morgantown, with Matt Piatt and Tom Gerner a shot behind. The second five included Danielle Zimmerman, who tied her all-time high of 291. Then our team ran into the “old” champs, Fra-zier-Simplex. Neither team shot well, but Fra-zier shot just well enough to knock us from the ranks of the undefeated and take an early 4-0 to 2-1 lead in the League, since they also knocked off Murrysville 1485 to 1470. Amy Smith’s 296 was high score for the third straight match. Danielle Zimmerman, made the top five with her highest score ever—294 and congratulations to Jason Piatt for coming out and scoring a 294 while shooting with a serious eye injury. Two new shooters fired in the match. One was Nicholle Benedict who is the daughter of team member Tom Benedict. Nicholle shot very well for her first league match, The other was Dave Willard. Some of you know Dave from other shoots here at the club. Dave and his brother Jack shot with the team almost 20 years ago. DMSC returned to its winning form with a 1481-1444 win at Allegheny. Matt Piatt came through with his highest score of the year—298—to top the chart, followed by Gerner, Trew, Janoski, and Smith. The team had a great turnout, with the second tier consisting of Dan Francis, Danielle Zimmerman, Fritz Hempelmann, Miles Ford, Tom Benedict, Chuck Hutchison, and Nicholle Benedict. There will be matches against Clymer and Ir-win before the Thanksgiving break.

FALL ANTIQUE RIFLE MATCH REPORT By Bruce Ungar, Executive Range Officer, Antique Rifler, and Roving Correspondent

The sky was totally overcast, with variable breezes at 10-18 mph from the west—not comfort-able but not painful! The big man from the land of the hardbacks came, saw, and conquered. Allen Jaworski led the shooters with 462-4x, and was hotly pursued by Dave Willard and Jim Madar who were neck and neck. See the final scores on the next page and see you in June '09 for our Spring match. Be healthy!!

MEETING NOTES FROM THE ALLEGHENY COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S LEAGUE AND THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SPORTSMEN’S AND CONSERVATION LEAGUE (Delegates Mike Yanchak and Bob Kirsopp) At the October PGC meeting at the Meadow-lands, our delegate and League Director Bob Kirsopp along with and Ron Boocks, repre-senting the WCSCL, presented a check to the commission for its Game Lands fund. The money; donated from member clubs, was des-ignated to support “in-lieu-of” tax assessments against the PGC. The Washington League will participate in the 2009 sportsmen’s show at the Washington Mall. The ACSL held its elections, and our represen-tative Mike Yanchak was re-elected as a direc-tor. WCO Bob Wheeler noted an unofficial state record 4lb. 1oz. sauger was caught on Char-tiers Creek. WCO Dan Puhala reported a new policy on deer mistakenly killed. The PGC will take the entire deer, instead of just the ant-lers, and issue a new tag. This will assist the commission in providing venison to needy peo-ple under the “Sharing the Harvest” program. The PA Automated Licensing System (PALS) is available and being tested at 15 locations, mostly around Harrisburg, as well as the PGC SW Regional Office. Details can be seen online at www.pgc.state.pa.us. The Allegheny League will participate in the February 19-22 sportsmen’s show at the Pitts-burgh Convention Center. The League is working with WYPT radio (660 AM) for a series of spots or discussions of is-sues on legislation, conservation, and member club activities.

PENNSYLVANIA FISH AND BOAT COMMISSION NEWS Prior to the recent election, PFBC Executive Director Dr. Douglas J. Austen urged citizens to vote “Yes” for a $400 million referendum to help upgrade the Commonwealth’s aging wastewater and drinking water infrastructure. Expressing support for the measure, Dr. Aus-ten said, “Fish cannot vote, but anglers and boaters can. By voting ‘Yes’ for the Clean Water Referendum on November 4, every Pennsylvanian who values clean water will be investing in our future and helping to pro-tect and improve the waterways that make Pennsylvania such a special place to live, work and visit.” The voters must have been paying attention, because the referendum passed by a 2 to1 margin. During its fall quarterly meeting, the Com-mission voted to allow staff to pursue the ac-quisition of public fishing easements on three properties along Elk Creek in Erie County in order to enhance public fishing opportuni-ties . Once the easements are acquired, they will provide access to 8,700 linear feet or 1.65 miles of stream along Elk Creek. Prop-erty acquisitions or easements typically take six to twelve months to finalize after formal Commission action. Properties or ease-ments in Erie are purchased through the pro-ceeds from the sale of the Lake Erie permits and from $6 of the fees collected from the combination trout-salmon/Lake Erie permits. The funds are deposited into a restricted ac-count and are used to provide public fishing access on or at Lake Erie and the tributaries to Lake Erie. The Commission also adopted two new regu-lations dealing with eggs. With exceptions for the Lake Erie watershed, it is now illegal to strip or remove eggs from fish taken from waters of the Commonwealth and to possess or use as bait unpreserved, refrigerated or frozen fish eggs regardless of their origin while fishing in or along the waters of the Commonwealth.

PENNSYLVANIA GAME COMMISSION NEWS The Commission took a number of positive actions at its October meeting. The Board gave preliminary approval to ex-pand the lawful use of crossbows to include both the archery deer and bear seasons. The Board needs to approve the measure at an-other public meeting in order for the proposal to take effect, so this change will not be in place for the 2008-09 seasons. The Commissioners also approved three land donations offered in Greene, Lebanon and Luzerne counties to be added to the agency’s network of 1.4 million acres of State Game Lands. In Greene County, the Board approved accepting a donation of 125 acres in Richhill Township, adjoining SGL 302, which currently is comprised of 1,196.2 acres in Greene and Washington counties. This donation from Consol Pennsylvania Coal Company, of Pittsburgh, consists of 60 acres of mixed hardwoods, 35 acres of shrub lands and reverting old fields and 30 acres of agri-cultural land; of which 20 acres are tillable. There is a small stream originating from ground water and springs on the property that flows into the Enlow Fork of Wheeling Creek Fall Turkey Season began November 1, so the PGC has a few reminders for turkey hunters: legal hunting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. For more information, please see page 14 of the 2008-09 Digest for the legal hunting hours table; it is now lawful to use a dog to pursue, chase, scatter and track wild turkeys during the fall wild turkey season. Prior to 2007, hunters were prohibited from using dogs to hunt any big game animal, which includes wild turkeys; in WMU 2A and 2B, hunters, when moving, must wear a hat containing a minimum of 100 square inches of solid fluorescent orange material, visible 360 degrees at all times.
