Good, Better or Best?

When given the option I am sure you would always choose to be the

best, but which one are you, in reali-ty? Are you the best in your trade? No matter what you do, are you the best at it? If not, why not? What are you doing that makes you the best? We all want success but very few people actually accomplish their dreams. In my years in business I have learned that striving to be the best at whatev-er you do will lead you to success.

Setting goals is very important, but just like the old saying goes; “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” If you are currently servicing 50 pools it is not realistic to set a goal of 200 pools within the next couple months. Set smaller, personal, and most im-portantly obtainable goals. I would suggest that you start by reflecting on your performance. If you're servicing 50 pools now, gaining 150 more isn’t going to make you better at what you do, however being the best will increase your job opportunities. In-stead of setting an unobtainable goal consider setting a goal that will im-prove your performance. For exam-ple, "I will attend all the upcoming training classes so that I fully under-stand all the new pool technology." This is an obtainable goal. By doing this you will strengthen your job knowledge which will lead to more opportunities and happy customers. When one goal is complete, move on to the next one until you truly are the best in your field.

In my experience and what I hear from successful business owners is that their main goal has always been to be the best. A good friend of mine is a successful landscaper. He loves what he does and aims at being the best landscaper in his area. His goals didn't include numbers or profit, his main goal is simple "be the best" and because of this not only is his busi-ness booming, most of that business comes from referrals.

So I want to challenge you. Visualize yourself as the best in your profession and set goals to help you get there, like the example above. Now this may sound easy to do but in fact it may be the hardest thing you do...start to love what you do. Truly enjoy servicing, plumbing or design-ing pools. Having the right attitude is key. Start every day reminding yourself that you're in this business because you enjoy what you do.

"Our Mission is Your Success" is PEP's mission statement. We have always believed that the most important aspect of our business is Customer Service. Daily we aim at giving the best service to our custom-ers by providing knowledge, stocking the products you need, and rushing those last minute orders when they come in. We all wish there was a simple formula for being successful but truthfully there isn't, otherwise we would all be successful. The advice I'm providing is not proven, this is just what has worked for PEP. We aim at being the best distributor for our customers!

Si usted tiene la op-ción, me imagino que lo que escoge es ser

excelente, pero ¿cuál es usted en realidad? ¿Es excelente en su profesión? No importa a lo que se dedique, ¿es excelente en lo que hace? Si no, ¿por qué no? ¿Qué puede hacer para ser excelente en su industria? To-dos queremos ser exitosos pero pocas personas pueden lograr sus sueños. En todos los años que llevo en el negocio, he aprendido que esforzarse para ser excelente en su profesión, lo llevará al éxito.

Establecer metas es muy importante, pero así como el viejo dicho dice "Roma no se construyó en un día." Si usted está dando mantenimiento a 50 piscinas, no es realístico proponerse una meta de incrementar su mantenimiento a 200 piscinas en los próximos meses. Haga metas pequeñas, personales y lo más importante: obtenibles. Le sugiero que empiece por reflexionar sobre su desempeño. Si usted está haciendo mantenimiento a 50 piscinas hoy y agre-ga otras 150, esto no lo hará mejorar en la industria, sin embargo si se enfoca en convertirse en un experto esto le dará más oportunidades. En lugar de proponerse una meta inalcanzable, considere proponer una meta que le ayudará a mejorar su rendimiento. Por ejemplo "voy a asistir a las clases de entrenamiento próximamente para obtener un conocimiento completo de las nuevas tec-nologías para piscinas." Esta meta es obtenible. Al hacer esto aumentará su conocimiento del trabajo y atraerá más oportunidades y clientes felices. Cuando alcance una meta, continúe con la siguiente hasta que usted sea en realidad excelente en su profesión.

En mi experiencia y lo que escucho de otros dueños de negocios exitosos es que la meta principal siempre es llegar a ser excelente. Un buen amigo mío es diseñador de jardines. El disfruta su trabajo y se enfoca en ser excelente

en su área. Su meta no incluye números o ganancias, su meta prin-cipal es simplemente "ser excelente" y por este motivo él prospera en su negocio y la mayoría de sus clientes son referidos.

Entonces quiero proponerle un reto. Visualice su negocio siendo excelente en su profesión y proponga metas que le ayudaran alcanzar sus sueños, como el ejemplo de arriba. La siguiente sugerencia se escucha-rá como algo fácil de hacer pero

el realidad puede que sea difícil: empiece a disfrutar su trabajo. Verdaderamente goce de hacer mantenimiento, plomería o diseñar piscinas. Tener una actitud positiva es la clave. Empiece cada día recordándose a sí mismo que disfruta de su trabajo.

En PEP "Nuestra Misión Es Su Éxito". Siempre hemos creído que el aspecto más importante en nuestro negocio es el servicio al cliente. A diario tratamos de ser excelentes en nuestro servicio: ofreciendo información del producto, almacenando los productos que necesitan y completando las ordenes de último minuto. Todos de-searíamos que existiera una fórmula simple para alcanzar el éxito, pero en realidad no hay una, si no, todos fuéramos exitosos. Modern Pool Design is gaining popularity across the country. With sleek, clean lines, it’s not always obvious how to create fun

entertainment areas for swimmers without disrupting the modern aesthetic. However, by adding anchors strategically throughout the pool, builders can offer their customers multiple options for fun and interac-tion with friends, while maintaining a clean, modern look.

In-Pool Benches - Benches built into the shallow end can be fitted with three 6” in-floor bronze anchors in a triangular pattern for two removable swim up bar seats and table to be added during a party. This area provides a shaded “conversation station” for the adults while the kids are splashing around. When the party is over just take them out!

Sun-Shelf - The sun shelf provides a shallow play space for small children and a relaxation area for adults. Add an anchor for a table/umbrella combina-tion or try putting anchors at the sun-shelf edge to install a removable basketball game set.

Modern Paver Decks- The geometric lines of travertine paver decks are often used in modern pool design but those pavers can still be fitted with a bas-ketball anchor set or a single volleyball anchor on the opposite side to create a “sports” pool. When the party is over, remove the game sets and replace the caps on the anchors to maintain the clean look of the deck.

Whether it is by adding conversation stations or sports games to your modern pool designs, don’t ne-glect to integrate “FUN” elements that offer additional profit potential.

As technology continues to evolve at an ever-in-creasing pace, more and more people are expecting and preferring to operate home

appliances and devices – from heating and audio-visual equipment to security and light bulbs - from the conve-nience of their smartphone or voice control technolo-gies such as Amazon Alexa.

Pool and spa equipment is a natural next step for the growing demand for smart home automation. Many homeowners are passionate about cooking, relaxing and enjoying time in their own backyards. Most new pools today are constructed with some kind of automation system - but what about the other four million pools that still only have very basic controls, such as timeclocks?

The unique swimming pool featured on the cover was built by Brian Copeland, owner of Apex Pool Construction. It is the first of its kind in Southern

California, built using a method that does not use gunnite or shot-crete. Brian explains, "We form and pour the pool using big-rock, 3500psi concrete, and all grade-60 #4 rebar throughout. This allows me to build a structure that is essentially a house founda-tion shaped like a swimming pool. These structures are much stronger than conventional pool shells and avoid the density problems associated with gunnite and shot-crete."

Brian says, "Years ago, I owned a medium sized pool service company in the San Fernando Valley when the Northridge earthquake hit. My company alone lost over a dozen pools to structural failure, a few lit-erally broke in half! Since I began my pool construc-tion company, I have been looking for a method of building a stronger pool shell. I have finally found that method. My focus is on the customer who's
